NFL Rumors: Tom Brady Won’t Take Hometown Discount To Stay With Patriots

I’m surely not a homer, but let’s be fair: when was the last time that Belichick allowed the same problems to carry over beyond that year, and at such important positions?

One possible example that I can think of would be the terrible WR group in 2006, coming out of a mediocre 2005, but even in ‘05 you still had 80 catches from Branch, another 60 from Givens, 40 from Brown, etc.

In other words, I’m assuming that the TE and WR groups are improved upon for 2020. The bar wasn’t exactly set too high, so it shouldn’t be a problem. It’s hard to see Belichick repeating the exact same mistakes. If Brady stays for another season, he should be able to field just as competitive of a team as he would anywhere else. Just my opinion.

sup I think this time it might be too much to over come. We have two Huge positions to fill on O: WR and TE most time these guys don't come in as polished Rookies. This past Draft was like a aberration with the success of Rookie WR not the norm. We would have to seriously out bid Teams for the Top Guys available in FA and when last I check we are not in that business. IF Brady was a little younger I say it's doable but father time has caught up. Fact Brady likes playing with Vets instead of Rookies.

I understand your stance and you make some good points, but I don’t think that it’s out of the realm of possibility to improve the skill position players.

As mentioned by another poster, moving on from Sanu saves 6.5m dollars. They should be able to improve that situation for similar money. Ben Watson had a 3m dollar cap hit this year to go along with his 17 catches, so that position shouldn’t be difficult to improve, either. I think they have to draft at those positions again, and also try to find some reasonably priced FAs like they try and do every season.

You may be correct that it ultimately ends up being too much, but we should be looking at 55m or so in cap space assuming that they move on from Sanu. Another possibility to free up cap space would be to extend Stephon Gilmore, as he has close to a 19m dollar cap hit. I think it all comes down to Brady and his asking price. If he’s willing to play for 25m or less, he stays and we treat it like most other seasons (approx.30m in space with 12 draft picks and a solid handful of departing free agents).

Have you not been paying attention for the last year? Brady couldn’t get the deal he wanted out of them last year so he made them include in the contract that they can’t tag him and that he can become a free agent.

I hope to hell he remains a Patriot but he’s set himself up to have options. Maybe to remain a Patriot he will want certain commitments to field a better offence. Maybe to remain he will want a certain level of money and years.

I think it’s more likely then not he remains but he will want a lot better players at TE and WR. If the Pats low ball him or won’t commit to revamping the O I can see him leaving and the Chargers make a lot of sense. Good set of skill players and good talent on the team. Back to his home state. Huge market for TB12 to expand to.

Chris Collinsworth said tonight on TV he thinks Brady goes to the Chargers. It makes sense from both sides. I think he wants to come back to the Patriots but not with the lack of offensive talent he had this year. Ultimately it will be up to Belichick.
Brady can't get both a big contract and a revamped O.

1. Big contract for Brady
2. Revamp offense
3. Keep defense mostly intact

Choose 2 of 3. I get the feeling that Brady's priorities are in the order above, basically whatever is best for his brand, not necessarily for winning games these days. Can't fault him much, nobody can maintain the same fire over a 20 year career. Although I can't help but resent it whenever he is wearing a TB12 hat in a press conference rather than a Patriots one..

Why would brady want to leave the patriots to go to the chargers?
The more things change the more they stay the same.

Chicken littles are now chicken littling about Brady and Belichick leaving.

They might be right, just like they might be right in any microcosm of games.

I just can't stand the glee with which people throw themselves into the task of being "first."

That said LOL... I was in chat not the GDT for the Titans game and I have to say... it was hard to keep believing when we were down by 1. then Romo made the claim that it was genius to throw that pick 6 or something... er, right about then I gave up the ghost LOL, breaking my own long-held stump speech of "the clock doesn't read 00:00."

Emotion is no guide to the eventual outcome here. That said, what a discouraging last-pass memory for Tommy in a Patriots uniform, if that's what it is.

Okay I know you sold your house and stuff Tom, but you really going to let that happen? :D

Feh. I know, bidnit. If someone told me to give up, say, 3M/year vs. what I believe to be my value... oh hold on, I made that deal at the outset of my working life. I have no analog for this.

:D

I'm not sure how Brady can logically hold both positions "my supporting cast needs an upgrade" and "give me all the money" but maybe he does, I don't know.

Who? Only key guys are KVN and Collins, if they leave, we have Sam and Bentley in the wings. I think Sam's speed and aggression will be an improvement on this D. The D is trending up baby.
Secondary will still be loaded.
Gonna be mighty difficult to have Sam playing two games at once, in two different cities on Sundays. He was scooped up by DET a while back.

I don't think he's getting more than 30 million guaranteed on a 2 year deal from any team. Except maybe Dallas if they want to avoid paying Dak. But other than them I can't see a team that has a ready to win roster overpaying Tom.

Maybe he won't need to take a discount here. Plus I'm assuming that he probably doesn't want his Patriots career with so many highlights to end on such a crappy note. No one wants that. Well except for CHB of course.

The article in the newsfeed where Kraft says he hopes Brady stays a Patriot or retires makes it sound like Kraft is willing to see him go elsewhere. He does not want it to happen, but basically says it is up to Tom. Which indicates he won’t overrule Belichick on this. And that is very good news.

I think the pats let Brady walk. At this point what else could they possibly want from him? he already gave them 6 Superbowls.

Bend with the wind Bobby I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

I think they are dome decent QB's available if it comes to that. Again it depends on how they feel about Stidham.

Why would he go to a losing team? Brady has understood for years that it’s about winning not having shiny toys.

FMIA Wild Card: Tom Brady the Pragmatist Controls His NFL Future

in the opening paragraph, King says Brady didn’t seem at all surprised by the loss. Pretty hard to win when your star player doesn’t believe in the team. Toms has a great run here, but it’s pretty clearly time to move on. He’ll realize how good he’s had it when he’s gone.

Tito's vodka and, in under 2 months, weed again. I'm leaving Austin, the 25+ minute commute to get anywhere can S my D.
S you in your A, don't wear a C and J all over your B's

if the reporting is accurate, it’s the best possible news for the future of the franchise. This team is looking at a major rebuild and no one will do it faster or more effectively than BB.

At this point it all comes down to money. I know Brady is not hurting for cash but he has been underpaid for years. and my guess is he wants about 30 million year which the pats won't pay him.

Even if he does come back my concern is that the TE and WR are so bad that I don't know if it can be fixed in a single year. BB cannot draft WR and beside Gronk he has not had much luck drafting TE either.

Only way the receivers get better is through free agency but that cost money the pats may not have had. BB lack of drafting WR has finally caught up with the team.

Kraft also told Peter King that the one year deal was at Brady's behest - "it was very important to Tom he have freedom at the end of the year." I think this chance to re-evaluate was in everyone's interest last year, Brady uncertain about staying, Belichick uncertain about Brady's future as a top-level QB.
