What went wrong this year

There’s ways of opening cap space. They’re gonna lose some of those linebackers unfortunately. McCourty is a free agent.
I'm 100% okay with losing Collins, he basically no-showed the second half of the season anyway. Hopefully DMac will be back, but given that he almost retired last season I'm certainly not counting on it. KVN is a sticking point for me, boneheaded comments this week aside I definitely want him back. Someone will probably overpay him to go suck on some other team for 2 years then get cut though, that seems to be how this works.

He wasn't going to get paid here ,at least what he wanted and pats got a 1st rounder if i am not mistaken .
It was a late 2nd round pick and Jonathan Cooper.

This season never felt quite right, even when the team was winning big early.

Just never had a great feeling about this team and my pre-game intuition was completely off for essentially the whole year, the first season I remember that being the case.

BB called this team tough and said they compete hard, on multiple occasions. But to me, I never felt this team was as tough (mentally or physically) or as resilient as recent teams, let alone Super Bowl winning teams.

Thuney is the one free agent of ours to resign. Collins would be my other preference as well.

i don't think i'll ever understand the Sanu thing. He was. if nothing else, a competent WR2 on two other teams before he got here, then proceeded to be absolutely ****ing worthless as a Pat. Some of it is clearly his injury, but that wasn't all of it.
More like sapoo

If they had a competent offense i think they could have made some noise. This offense was struggling just to get to 20 points. Yes the defense at times was lousy but a good offense can help your defense out.

I can’t see them putting big money into two guards.

So does Jamie Collins. People don’t realize he’s the Philip Dorsett of the defense.

Hmm, I disagree here a bit.

Collins is so much more physically gifted at his respective position than Dorsett is.

Collins has the potential to be a 1st team all pro if he’s mentally locked in.

Dorsett is steady and consistent, but just incredibly limited in talent and impact.

They both look like superstars when actual superstars do the heavy lifting. They both suck when counted on to a be a mover and shaker alone.

One guy lost in the OL mix is Cajuste. This guy has some talent but because of the quad injury his stock fell. It was almost like cannon. Interesting to see what he can do.

I don’t think Dorsett has ever looked that great. He’s looked like a competent 4th option who has good hands and occasionally gets open, but never jumps off the screen.

Collins, OTOH, makes some incredibly impressive, jump-off-the-screen plays, but is so inconsistent and fades over the course of a season.

Collins has the potential to be a game-wrecking defender without much help from others but he just seems to struggle with consistency and engagement; Dorsett can’t take over a game regardless of how focused and engaged he is.

No way you can blame injuries for this.

Patriots started playing very undisciplined, “loser” football for much of the second half of the season. Terrible penalties; bad situational football. Bad coaching decisions at the worst times. Bad execution at the worst times. Reminds me of 2009 when it was clear that they needed a totally new group of leaders to build around. It does not feel at all like 2015 when they were derailed by injuries but fought nobly. This team just seemed to be missing its heart, soul, brain, and guts. That’s the type of team they’ve beaten so many times. You felt it this entire game vs. the Titans, that they were already defeated well before the fourth quarter. 2009 was the end of an era and rebuild. 2019 is the end of another era time for another rebuild. Their core players just looked old, tired, and finished.
Whoa there, bud. Injuries most definitely were key to derailing the offense's continuity and evolution (OL, FB and WR, also Brady). That has an obvious domino effect manifesting poor execution and crucial penalties. Then there were questionable personnel decisions regarding OL, WR and TE plus plain bad luck with unexpected retirements, trades that didn't pan out, etc. This team demonstrated ample heart/soul/guts/brains but lacked speed, power and chemistry offensively. They still went 12-4 thanks almost exclusively to heart/soul/guts/brains (brains including superior coaching). The 2019 Patriots didn't have any slackers or malcontents like 2009. They just had too much to overcome for a deep playoff run. C'est la vie.

Collins’ free agency is going to be fascinating. He was a legitimate DPOY candidate after week 5, but his big sack last week was his first sack in two months. I assume he’ll be making quite a bit more than this year’s $3 million regardless, though.

That game where we got run over defensively, Collins whiffed so many times setting the edge. He then went from a defensive MVP candidate to basically disappearing the second half of the season...

It was a little surprising to see him on the edge this season in the first place, given that he lasted about 5 plays there early in his career before they decided that he couldn’t do it. The Browns also started him at OLB before moving him back to the middle. And frankly, I expect his next team to sign him with the OLB position in mind too.

Cut Shaq and sign Thuney? Thuney has arguably been our best Olineman since 2016.
$13.6m dead cap hit by cutting Shaq. Ain’t gonna happen.

Lot's of things went right for them to get to 12-4.

Defense came back down to earth, but was still excellent - though it seemed they generated fewer turnovers towards the end.

Brady did the best he could with what he had. The team couldn't score enough TDs when they hit the red zone.
