Say Goodbye To Van Noy

I’m not young. And I won’t fault those who go for the Max $. However, I’d be fine making millions at the place I prefer and leave money on the table. I’m not really into material things and I think I’d be able to set myself up with whatever the Patriots offered. I’d much rather make 4.5M$ in Seattle than 5.7M$ in Birmingham, for instance.
Crazy idea! More to life than money? Outlandish.

Chose not to re-sign for reasons. They're the only ones I can think of (don't feel like searching EVERY Patriots player's history) that actually had success outside of the New England Patriots.
There are plenty of NEPs who had success somewhere else. I don't think that's a debate.

I think the discussion is more about the reasons a player leaves and the judgement behind it as opposed to a completely blown evaluation of the talent/value.

For example, BB did not try to resign Amendola. I'm pretty sure BB felt DA had plenty of football left in him but not at the value he set when compared to the price the market had set for his services

Ok, so why isn't Brady playing for $1M a year, with the remainder being available for other players? BTW, who is playing for draftily discounted rates, other than those on rookie salaries?

Sure, players often rule out some noncompetitive teams. That doesn't mean that they don't think that money is important. I would think that most vets want to be paid close to what they are worth by a competitive team.
=======
Yes, sometimes a player does indeed come along who gives us a drastic discount. Bruschi was such a player.

I just get the impression many, many posters here think $ is more important. I don’t.

I believe for Tom, money is the result of the journey- not the journey itself but he sure as hell wants the planes, trains, hotels and destination to be nice.

I was not missing that. In fact I was hoping you would go that direction.

McDaniels went from assistant (2001) to OC (2005) in 4 seasons. Patricia was hired in 2004 and -- even though wasn't officially named DC, which BBJr also isn't right now -- he was calling defensive plays after Peas left in 2009. So thats about 5 seasons.

Belichick Jr. was hired in 2012 and didnt start co-calling plays until this year. You do the math.. he has had the exactly same trajectory as most others.

Hell, if other teams would have started poaching our defensive coaches earlier Flores (first assistant job 2008 - DC 2018) would have been DC faster than Belichick Jr. but his ascend was stopped by Patricia staying put for a long time.

Flores joined in 2004, not 2008. The main point is that there are a ton of assistants, 10+, on every team, and that the vast majority of these never end up calling plays, even those who are not officially DC or OC. This is no regular trajectory. The fact that Flores eventually became DC, or Patricia after Mangini, is a result of many other guys never making that leap. 10-20% of assistants get that promotion.

Flores was a scout from 04-07. Became a coach assistant in 08. Defacto DC in 18.

Fat Matt joined the staff in 04. Was defacto DC in 2010. He came after Pees who was here 2 years before being named DC formally in 06.

BB Jr was a coach in 2012. Here it is 7 years later and he is not even defacto DC.

Why are you so hung up on this? As long as he does the job, who cares?

I never said he sucked or anything. I said it's nepotism that he has the job. Pretty simple.

Let's qualify that.

Are you saying BB gave Stephen Belichick the safeties coach job without actually earning it OR are you saying he gave his son an opening in the business and hired him for the football research job @ $35k a year in 2012?

You do realize there is a big difference.

Safeties coach is one thing, unofficial DC is quite another. I should hope that someone would have a lot more background, playing the game counts too, before being at this stage.

What I see coming down the pike is Belichick coaching for 5 or 6 more years than handing over the keys to a family member.

I agree. But then no one is offering me millions a year to throw or catch a ball or tackle someone who just did.

See some comments about trading Sanu and I sure hope that he isn't gone this offseason. I think that he fits the Patriots system well and should be an important playoff piece. With the current deals shelled out for WRs, we wouldn't be able to get a better guy for the same price.

You should check my very deliberate wording with Flores. He became an assistant in 2008. Before he was a scout which is an entirely different job.

Whatever, go on obsessing over BBjr getting a low paying entry level job because of his father if that does something for you. Lets just not pretend as if using your personal network to get a foot into the door is something special in his case.

After a certain point there is no improvement in life quality or security anymore. Whats the difference between career earnings of 100m and 70m ?

Money just becomes some weird proxy for respect.

Playing the game?

Experience playing football at a high level counts. I didn't say it was required.
You act like its a pre-requisite especially since you clearly have an issue with BB Jr.

Seeings how there is no chance in hell anyone else gives us a second round pick for him we would look like fools to trade him after half a season.
