20 years ago this week. Crazy.

Angle of the article is first hand accounts from people who interacted with Tuna and BB the day & hours before he resigned. Decent read.

Henning, hired by Parcells, not Belichick, walked to Parcells' office to discuss his job status. He wondered if Belichick would retain him.

Henning: "[Parcells] said, 'Sit down, you may not have to do anything.' I said, 'What are you talking about?' He said, 'Watch the TV.' So I was sitting in there with Bill, watching the TV, when Belichick had the press conference and resigned. I said, 'How did that all happen?' He said, 'Well, you know, he apparently has something going with another team.' Obviously, New England."

After what Parcells & the Jets had done to the Pats a few years earlier it felt like payback. My sense at the time was that BB did not want to have Parcells hovering over him in whatever ambiguous role he was going to be in and with the lack of ownership clarity it made sense not to take it. If he failed with the Jets he may never have gotten another chance. Obviously none of us had any idea how fortuitous that moment would be with BB becoming the greatest coach of all time.

One of the best uses of a first rounder in nfl history.

So good. Clearly BB had a deal with Kraft, Parcells got wind of it and tried to box Belichick in. Belichick had a lot of balls resigning and becoming his own man.

I think Vinny is right, we will never know the whole story. Thanks for posting.

I think it's hilarious that he worked out in the Jete gym during the morning and then resigned afterwards...
I bet he had some coffee too.

Yep. No question BB and Krafty had a deal

Man, there was an article in ... I think it was in the Chicago newspaper ... 20 or so odd years ago that offered some insider perspective about this, about Charlie Armey ... all about Parcels, Armey, Grier and it offered a glimpse of what went wrong in New England... he conjectured that Parcells bullying ways lead to BB not wanting to be part of the staff under the Tuna ... iirc

Perfect BSPN story, told by Jets people to Jets fans. Cry us a river.

Rehashing the story again serves as a reminder of why the then Jet executives who migrated to the league office with Goodell have had the long knives out to get Belichick and the Patriots ever since.

Along with the jilted NY media, they’re responsible for hyping SpyGate beyond proportion resulting in a punishment far greater than the actual crime and creating Deflategate out of misinformation and an ignorance of basic science.

There’s no mystery to why Belichick did it. He chose Bob Kraft over Woody Johnson or Charles Dolan. Time has proven that Belichick made a very good choice.

"Bill Belichick is so efficient that his introductory news conference with the Jets was also his farewell news conference. " - photo caption in the article

Awesome!

Regards,
Chris

One of the best????
Name a better one.
I’m biased. I think it’s the best one because BB is my fav NFL ever.

I suppose you could make a case for Jim Brown ?

Not sure why the article wrote that as something underhanded - the Patriots had already asked for permission, it was out in the open. Other than that, great article.

I remember when it went down and I was really on both sides of the fence. I mean it was Bill Belichick for a first rounder. BB had made his name off defense with the Giants and did a good job with ours but never in a million years did I see this playing out the way it has.

There were Jet fans ecstatic to receive the pick and there were Pats fans kind off miffed about giving it up. Didn’t come off as the most people friendly person in the world either for those that recall his pressers from his treadmill or bike in the Cleveland days.

Nothing much to work with draft wise in his first year except the Chosen one which was the greatest hidden treasure in draft history. He certainly knocked it out of the park with Seymour and Light the following year. I would have to say the team building process combined with the veterans in place was probably the greatest job in NFL history.

At any rate, its our job as fans to relay these stories and legacies to the new breed of fans. The ones who will never know the greatness of what we’ve been blessed to witness. I have no idea who Lombardi is besides black and white tv clips, but I know he was great because of the stories and legends from the people who were watching and sharing. I’ve never watched Jim Brown and the Browns massacre teams but again, I know he was great.

I did grow up watching the tail end of the Steelers, the Raiders, the dominance of the NFC for all those consecutive superbowls mainly the 49ers, Giants, Redskins and Cowboys and always hoping that one day the Patriots would be in that conversation. Here we are all these many years later. The Coach, the QB and 6 super bowl victories. Mission accomplished.

I think the BSPN/Jets mouthpieces/Tuna PoV is/are Kraft and BB had conversations before he resigned and before they sent a fax asking for permission to speak to him.

TBH I would not be surprised in the least if that happened.
