Looks like Gilmore for DPOY is pretty much a done deal barring something wild with Chandler Jones on Sunday. Re-watching the SB I think Gilmore had a good case over Edelman (both were very deserving either way), I think if Pats recover the fumble Gilmore forced, it may have titled it in his favor. A DPOY and a SB MVP would have been difficult to ignore.

I know he doesn't play for the Steelers, but do you guys think with the DPOY and a few more seasons at a high level that he may make it? I'd be interested to see how many DPOY have made the Hall. Really the highest honor a corner can realistically earn because they'd never win MVP.

If he can keep it up for 4 or 5 more years he has a very good chance. The Pats ask him to do a ton this year by leaving him on an island and he has delivered big time.

Chandler Jones won’t be going for personal records on Sunday; it’s all about what helps the defense

Yeah he can freelance a little but on the other hand Fitz is pretty good at throwing INTs.

Depends. If he doesn’t win another Super Bowl, then he needs another couple of All Pro seasons. But if he could make another game winning pick in another Super Bowl, then his profile will raise higher a lot quicker. At the end of the day, it’s a popularity contest. If people can remember you because of stats or plays, then you have a good chance.

I look back at Gilmore’s first year with us, he has a lot of freelance in his game and we got burned a couple times because of him,

but then he drank the cool aid and gone from good to all pro. Need him to be all world this Sunday!

First 4 games we thought he was a mistake, then he turned a corner and looks like a brilliant BB pickup.

I believe there was a thread about how the Patriots were finished as SB contenders due to the albatross of Gilmore's contract... certainly aged well :D

His first 4 seasons in Buffalo don't jump out at you

Because he had to learn a different defense every year.

These were his DC's his first 5 years

Wannstedt
Pettine
Schwartz
Rex Ryan/Dennis Thurman
Rex Ryan/Dennis Thurman

Not surprising that his best years in buffalo was in Rex's defense and his best year there was a 2nd year in a system.

Two more rings and he's a lock. I say that because if you ever get to Canton, you'll notice a large number of the inductees have multiple rings. There are obvious exceptions ( Marino, Kelly etc) but it explains the large number of Steelers and Packers in there. On the other hand, there wasn't the animus to those teams nationwide that there is to the Patriots.....

He probably needs another year or two as the best corner in the game and another three or four as a useful player; he'll have to remain a starter until his mid to late 30s. He's better than, say, Charles Woodson or Champ Bailey were at their height but Woodson and Bailey played a long time and each had a "second phase" of their career as an aging but still valuable player. Woodson's DPOY came at age 33, 11 years into his career, and he went out as a 1st team All Pro at safety. Woodson's second half of his career was what ended up cementing his Hall selection; there was a solid 8 years of his career in the middle where he kind of disappointed.

There's an element of longevity to most defensive backs who end up in the Hall. Ty Law was a great player for a long time but was never as good as Gilmore at his height, and he made the Hall, while Nnamdi Asomugha won't make the Hall even though he had two or threw years as the best corner in the league because he fell off a cliff and retired to pursue an acting career.

Alot of 2 and 3 ring Patriots still waiting their turn. Most notably Rodney and Seymour.

Honestly it isn't that hard to be on track for the HOF anymore. They got most of their backlog done and are now letting in more players that really don't scream HOF every year.

That being said Gilmore is making a great case right now. If he wins DPOY he would absolutely be on track. This would be his 2nd all pro year which would be a great accomplishment. His lack of pro bowls early in his career might be a slight knock against him but part of that was due to being stuck with a small market and poorly coached team at the time.

He needs to survive the 30 wall.

Have a couple more great years like this into his 30’s and he’s absolutely there.

Half the fanbase took a crap on this guy and now he might go down as one of the best free agency pick ups ever
