Antonio Brown Update

You are assuming the reason he is not playing is because of the threat of going on Goody's exempt list. We believe it to be true but it is not fact.

It could also be that because he shot his way out of OAK, PITT, shot himself in NE and has been a complete wack-job no one wants him bad enough.
That's true. In either case I'm talking more for next year. You can't let this guy play this year the way he's been tweeting. I would imagine they could slap conduct detrimental on him for a million things that have nothing to do with the civil case if they wanted. I'm curious to see if after an entire offseason they would allow him to play with time served. Probably not I guess. I'm sure he'll continue to be loud about it until next year anyway.

This. He had a huge deal with Oakland... which he blew up. Then the Pats. He's not effectively under suspension now. He's effectively...

...radioactive.
True, but if there was no way he was going to be suspended or put in the exempt list, you don't think another team would have signed him one week after the Pats cut him? Radioactive or not, somebody would have grabbed him. Heck, rumors all around were that the Pats wanted to give him another shot, but not if he was going to be immediately suspended or put on the exempt list.

The NFLPA should try to get something into the CBA to this effect, as doesn't what happened to AB (not that I'm advocating for that person) show that if all the owners "cooperate" (or if the Commish puts out the word that this guy is going on the exempt list if anyone signs him), a player can be de facto suspended without really being suspended, and still be suspended some more if anyone dares to sign him?

AB dug his own grave, and probably doesn't pay for (or listen to) good lawyers, but there's something stinky about how this was handled, and it seems like the "procedure" could be used again to really screw some lesser-troubled players who might be subject to a "lengthy investigation" while they are unsigned by any team...
OK but I think there is more to just the specter of AB going on the EL.

That dude has a lot of baggage.

God help the team that signs him.

If there was no way he was going to be suspended or exempted, then it's not a foregone conclusion that the Pats would have cut him.

Doubt he can win that argument. I don’t know if legally the NFL has to conduct their investigation in a reasonable time. They kinda hit a grey area
Bottom line is the nfl has determined he is bad for the brand. And it’s hard to argue that conclusion. So the NFL will do whatever it can to keep him away for as long as possible.
Any organization would do the same. They want him to no longer be associated with the nfl so they work the rules that are in place to keep him away until he becomes forgotten or just makes a damn fool of himself so he becomes considers AB the looney rather than AB part of the face of the league.

Can we also put the 'if Bob hadn't gotten a handy-J at a sex spa for sex hookers we could have kept AB' canard to bed now?

Even if Bob wasn't getting his pickle polished AB's behavior would have resulted in him being cut. He's done some wacko stuff.
Whacked vs Wacko ... hmmm

AB and Gordon are two sad cases.

Gordon apparently has demons related to drug use that, despite his best intentions and the efforts of those around him, he just can't overcome. I really feel for the guy and wish him well.

AB appears to be detached from reality in some significant way...i'm not a shrink and i've never met the guy, so i can't begin to figure it out, but he, literally, had everything with three different teams over the last two years and couldn't manage himself. If he ever seeks the help he needs, I hope he gets it.

WTH...et tu Rover?

I agree, but my point was, the word must have been out that the guy is going to be suspended or exempted indefinitely (or at least for a long time) the moment the Pats cut him, and that kept anyone else from taking a flyer on him, including the (possibly) "cutter's remorse" Patriots.

That isn’t a big suspension. It’s exactly what you’d expect. If the Pats hadn’t released him the NFLPA would have demanded urgency and he would have been back from suspension now. This point has been made since the very day he was released. Kraft too busy running the film production dept to realize how foolish this all was. Way to save the franchise’s reputation, Bob.

Exactly. Even if this “leaked” report is true, and I am not certain, it’s proof positive that the Pats messed ip if they end up being on the hook for his salary. We could have had AB back already now and maybe won the Chiefs and Texans games and had HFA......... instead we’re left ruining “what if”s

Welcome to my new thread

Exclusive Bring back AB 2020

No one signed him. Therefore the league didn't have to act. Should someone had signed him (or kept him), IMO he would have been put on the exempt list, and then given his sentence, after review.

Hasn't he been serving a 10+ game suspension already? Just strange really. .

I think in general for these big name players, once Bill cuts them, coaches/GMs think twice before giving them another choice.

Does this impact the team's chances of not having to pay him / get cap relief next year?

Not if the suspension turns out to be a year

Believe that was covered in Adrian Peterson case. Comrades like Denny Chin and others have ruled in favor of Vladimir Ilyovich Goodell and the Soviet Football Association, handing them authority to do anything at all.

Article 46: We can also do whatever we want, for the greater good, regardless of the rest of the agreement.

Not if the suspension turns out to be a year

I am still not sure what the 6 month suspension is for let alone a year. He’s facing a bogus civil lawsuit. How can he be suspended for that?

There was always, to me, an uneasiness about relying on these types of guys, against the grain of the purported mentality of the franchise.
The tendency was to err on the side of good guys who are reliable, consistent and team players.
They’ve won a lot with that prescription and going against it has left them short.
There are other examples; Lloyd, Moss, haynesworth, Floyd, 85, etc (I don’t include Dillon in this group) some worked out, most didn’t.
Ironically veering from valuing stable, consistent guys seems to be most of the mistake that hurt the most.

It means that the NFL investigation found something that they think is credible.

Trent Brown is also facing serious allegations in a civil lawsuit, and that hasn’t kept him off the field. Clearly, a civil lawsuit alone is not enough to cause what is rumored to be under consideration for AB.
