I'm Finally Convinced: This is Brady's Last Year in New England

Your first sentence tells the story. Not only do the Patriots have gaping holes
in the offensive line, wide receiver, and tight end: hey also have the following
players whose contracts expire in March 2020: Brady, Karras, Thuney, Collins, Roberts, VanNoy. Shelton, D. McCourty, Dorset, Bethel, Ebner, and Slater.
They stand to lose one of their draft picks, probably their #1? Plus, their available
cap money won't go far enough filling these positions.
Brady may settle for a ready made team where he doesn't have to duck for cover
each and every play.

They're ok on cap space next year and will probably not lose their 1st rounder. They should be able to re-sign Van Noy, McCourty, and Thuney comfortably and everyone else on this list is either relatively cheap (the special teams guys) or replaceable. Karras is probably gone but otherwise.

Team's fortunes will still depend on a QB though.

I think we need to make Teddy Bridgewater our priority. He's a very cerebral player with a high completion percentage and low interceptions, and he's young at 27. Won in his starts with the Saints, won at Minnesota. The leg injury is the main question mark, but he seems to have healed nicely. I think he's the best available on the market, and he will mesh really well in our system.

I would certainly take him over Cam Newton, Mariota, or Winston. And the top QB's won't be on the board by the time we pick in the draft, if we even take a QB, so.....

Bridgewater seems like the best option. I think he's a franchise starter best case, and at worst he's still good enough to win and hold things down until we draft and develop someone

Agree.Teddy would be a good QB but what is the points from Saints perspective to give us Bridgewater? He seems to be a natural Brees ' successor.

Brees and Bridgewater contracts are both up. Brees is still performing at a high level, and I doubt he hangs it up in the next year or two. Bridgewater will want starter pay, and I don’t see the Saints paying both of them. He should jump at more pay and a starter position for the best coach and franchise in the league!

Melvin Gordon or Sony?

Austin Ekler or James White?

Keenan Allen or Edelman?

Mike Williams or Sanu?

Hunter Henry or Lacosse?

Anthony Lynn or BB?

Shane Steichen or Josh M? o_O

He didn't cut ties with the organization as a whole, however. He's going to STILL be active with Best Buddies - - - just not locally. THAT'S the point.

I can't agree with your point about time with the family, because he didn't say he was going to spend LESS time with the charity as a whole. He's going to do it on a "global basis". Just not locally.

As I said, until this, I was one of those who were in the camp of "He's sold houses before, that means nothing" when people were pointing at the Chestnut Hill sale. This is a very different tell.

.
Hi there.

What Tom Brady had to say about his changing role with Best Buddies | Boston.com

“The summers just end up being a very busy time and my kids are getting older and we have so many different things taking us in different directions,” Brady explained. “I’m always going to support Best Buddies. Anthony [Shriver] knows that. I’m a huge advocate of what they do. It’s just more of a timing thing than anything, and still going to be working with Best Buddies and I’m just passing the torch to the next generation that’s got to carry it for a long time because people who do that type of work in the community, the tradition has to carry on.”

@captain stone

Why are you taking my response to a different post and using it on this one?

Please delete post #166

Thanks.

Hi Kontra!

".....we have so many different things taking us in different directions...."

".....It’s just more of a timing thing than anything...."

"......I’m just passing the torch to the next generation that’s got to carry it for a long time because people who do that type of work in the community, the tradition has to carry on.....”

He immediately cited his kids aging. That was his first and foremost (indicating it was at the top of his mind) answer. You’re reading into it what you want to try to save this hastily-created thread. Occam’s Razor. Give it a try and apply it to this situation.

Agree! The grind of NFL football married with endless grief surrounding this team would have destroyed another man years ago. He has nothing left to prove unless he strictly wants to get to 45.
Brady has always been a pretty positive dude. I don't think any of the drama affects him the way it affects the fans. Guy is incredibly competitive which is what drives him. Agree that he has nothing left to prove to us fans, but he may disagree.

Brady discussed the Best Buddies commitment today:
From his WEEI interview Monday morning:

“I’m still going to be working with Best Buddies and it’s just passing the torch to the next generation that’s gotta carry it for a long time. Jayson Tatum and Jules will do a great job moving forward, so it’s nice to be able to pass the torch to them.”
Wait, so Brady is talking about passing the torch to .....

Jules? Tourch guy is gonna have a meltdown, lmao.

Why is this offseason different from the rest. We've have had lots and lots of turnover every year. For those who only like recent history, we're been in the payoffs 11 years in a row. And, of course, we have all kinds of records and categories of excellence this century.
Because team hasn't had to replace QB for 20 years? Not saying it's definately going to happen, but for the 1st time, there is a strong possibility.

Yes, I agree, this year is different with respect to QB. I just plug in $20M for 2020 and wait. It seems unlikely that the 2020 QB cap hit will be larger than that.
=================
However, the post I responded to detailed many, many other potential losses. I didn't think that this list was extraordinary in any way, as you say, except for Brady.

"Not only do the Patriots have gaping holes in the offensive line, wide receiver, and tight end: hey also have the following players whose contracts expire in March 2020: Brady, Karras, Thuney, Collins, Roberts, VanNoy. Shelton, D. McCourty, Dorset, Bethel, Ebner, and Slater.

So you want to move on from Tom?

So you want to move on from Tom?
I wouldn’t get rid of him just to get rid of him, but if, say, a decent replacement was available then yes, I probably would. Even if Brady was better than the replacement that is outweighed by getting N years from the replacement vs only 1 year (2 max) from Brady.

When Brady sucks I will admit it 5 years later but I really don't think this is it.

Brady sucks now, but his "weapons"(snicker) suck worse...in some cases much worse...

Like whom? See that's the thing. When healthy,I don't see anyone available better than him.

I'd rather have Tom back on a 1yr deal
