OT: Lamar Jackson

I think there is a difference between a qb like Wilson, or Rodgers, who are great passers, and can run when need be, and a qb like Jackson, who's game is built around his ability to run. Argue all you want, if Jackson loses a step or two he will not be effective.

Which is why pocket passers are just entering their prime when the ones who rely on athleticism are already falling out of theirs.

This is what happened to Cam after that MVP 2015 season. The next year he just got beatdown after beatdown and then kept complaining that he shouldn't have to take hits because he's a QB. It's already starting from the whiny Ravens camp and is bound to get worse. He'll probably make it through this season which will be their best chance, and after that expect some whippings week after week.

So funny how the typical mediots are declaring this a "new era" of the running QB and acting like Jackson already has a Canton bust carved out since this is bound to continue for the next fifteen yeras; like we haven't seen this exact same thing happen about seven times and each time fizzle out quickly.

I love watching what the Ravens are doing. Using 3 tight ends, dominating the line of scrimmage, and alternating the run between the RB and QB. Then an efficient passing game. I like applaud teams for thinking outside the box trying something different. From what I’ve read this offense isn’t new, but hasn’t been used in several decades.

Jackson has been great and has been exciting to watch. But you’re right that every half dozen years or so, there’s a new running QB that’s going to change the way the game is played. The media fawns over them, but it never lasts. Either the defenses figure it out or the QB starts getting hurt. We’ve seen this play out many times.

Is there a scenario the Steelers play the Ravens in the playoffs?
They are the ONLY physical team besides the Pats and of course, the Ravens who could leave Mr. Jackson a little black and blue.
If Lamar can get through this season injury free...he is either lucky or today’s Superman.

His haircut should have been on the injury report since Week 1.

The claim “running QBs Get hurt more than non running QBs” =/= “Running QBs have shorter careers than non running QBs”.

2 different claims

also how do we operationalize “running QBs”?

I think running QBs are those who run to pick up yards, not just to escape pressure. Lamar Jackson is the perfect example of a running QB.

I can't find the article, but I remember a veteran player (I think it was a Giants' LB) criticizing Cam Newton when he was coming into the NYFL. The player claimed that a QB has to be able to stay in the pocket and read defenses to be successful.

I don’t like calling Lamar a running QB because he’s been extremely effective in the passing game so far. Granted most of his throws aren’t overly difficult. 3 tight ends. A lot of straight line throws. He also is progressing and getting better. Impossible to say how effective he would be in 10 years when he can’t run like this anymore.

I still would guess the greatest predictor of how long a quarterback plays is how well they pass the ball, generally because it is a passing league and mostly a passing position.

You only need to look at the short career length of running backs to get an idea of the toll of running the ball.

There are QB’s who CAN run, Aaron Rodgers, Steve Young, John Elway, Russell Wilson.

And then there are QB’s who run first or maybe run too often. So much so that they produce running back like numbers.

Randall Cunningham, Michael Vick, Lamar Jackson.

These guys are generational talents but they also put themselves at risk which inevitably leads to more injuries. It’s great when they’re healthy but the potential for disaster is also greater.

Rolling the dice with the most important position on the field is risky to say the least.

Only matter of time before some LB pulls a 'Mo Lewis' on him and sends him to oblivion.

Many of Lamar's runs are by design so at this time he is a running qb.

That's the difference.

QB's mentioned like Steve Young, Elway, Wilson, Rogers were/are clearly pass first QB's. It's not like their teams constantly ran plays Baltimore does.

28 touchdown passes. 2 games with 5 passing TDs and no picks.

They don’t want to see the Steelers in the playoffs. They would be 6 if they make it most likely. They’d head to Baltimore if they can upset the Chiefs.

His running sets up the easier passes for him.

I won’t argue against his running ability contributing to opening up the passing game.

it’s also absurd to think anyone knows or has a clue how good he will or won’t be when he loses a step or 2

I don't understand how this is relevant to my post.

Are you saying Baltimore does not use Jackson differently that the other quarterbacks in my post?

That's what makes him a run first QB, until he's not.

let’s say I conceded the point that he’s a run first QB.

he would still have a passer rating of 109+. Pretty good for any QB
