Poor drafting now biting the Patriots in the butt?

2019 class. The Patriots already have made some notable misses in terms of WR. Harry has not looked good, but he's a rookie coming off injury. Joejuan Williams is essentially a healthy scratch or DNP each game, and Harris is on IR.

He actually isn't :D

Which doesn't really detract from your point

I don’t get people going on about all the different WR’s we could have taken over the years. What makes anybody think they would have worked here? I’m not sure if it’s the system, Brady not trusting rookies, bad scouting, some combination of everything, but at this point I have some doubts that guys like Ridley or AJ Brown would have been effective here. Weird and frustrating situation.

I have nightmares about RAS I Dowling when I think about JoeJuan Williams
To think in this draft we could of had both Deebo Samuel AJ Brown or change out Brown for Terry Mcclaurin.

Quick!

Name all the BB era Patriots WR draft picks who busted in New England, but then went on to great careers elsewhere.

1 31 New England Patriots Sony Michel RB Georgia
1 32 Baltimore Ravens Lamar Jackson QB Louisville

Value: Baltimore is just as guilty for drafting a 30 y/o TE but the point stands. You can find RBs mid-late Rds. How many different one have we won w? Smith, Dillon, Blount etc

1st Rd is for QB/OL/DL/CB w very few exceptions. RB is the cherry on top of the sundae.

Baltimore May have missed with their first pick, but their second pick they drafted the NFL MVP.

Think Brady couldn’t make it work with DJ Moore? Have you seen him play?

I actually like the Michel pick, I thought he could be in the David Johnson mold. Not saying he’d be as good as David Johnson, but thought he could play on every down, catch some passes, and really keep the offense flexible. Instead, in his limited chances at catching or running routes he’s been mediocre, so they trot him out there to only run. I DO think he’s been a victim of some awful line play, but I can understand the criticism on the pick for a two down back.

Of course I have. I’m not questioning anybody’s talent, I’m saying something is very odd when there are so many failed ‘experiments’ WR. Hell even some of our best FA wr’s over the years we’re just average players on other teams.

It's really 2017+ & not 2014-2016.

2014
  • Stork played well in a SB season
  • Garoppolo won 2 games in 2016 & netted the 43rd pick in the 2018 draft
  • James White no explanation needed
  • Malcolm Butler UDFA - SB hero & 2018 3rd round comp pick
2015
  • Trey Flowers great DE, SB hero (2016) & 2020 3rd round comp pick
  • Shaq Mason elite RG prior to this season
  • David Andrews UDFA - great center
  • Malcolm Brown two good seasons
2016
  • Joe Thuney elite LG
  • Jacoby Brissett turns into Philip Dorsett who came up big during the 2018 SB run
  • Malcolm Mitchell productive 2016 season & SB
  • Elandon Roberts depth ILB & Karras capable C
  • Jonathan Jones UDFA - great slot CB
These drafts & UDFA classes are fine IMO. It's the last three classes that are holding the team back specifically on offense.

3rd round pick Antonio Garcia
3rd round pick Derek Rivers
1st round pick Sony Michel
1st round pick Isaiah Wynn
2nd round pick Duke Dawson
1st round pick N'Keal Harry
2nd round pick Joejuan Williams
3rd round pick Damien Harris
3rd round pick Chase Winovich
UDFA JC Jackson
UDFA Adam Butler

They need more from that group. No doubt about it. Currently they are getting a LT, a 2 down RB & a rotational OLB out of 9 top 100 picks the last few drafts
Stork was average and drafted at an appropriate pick to his production. Jimmy would’ve been a home run had we traded him for what the rumors were but we didn’t so that wasn’t a great pick for us.

Malcom Brown was always average and not worthy of a first round pick.

Brissett was a bad pick for us. If your justification for making him a good pick is that we traded him for a guy who had a good game then I don’t know what to tell you.
Mitchell could’ve been good but ultimately you don’t want to use a draft pick on a guy who plays a half season.

Didn’t say that. He wasn’t a zero however. Just as Mitchell wasn’t either. The standards evaluating the 2014-2016 drafts are high IMO. The team would take them over the recent ones

So the goal is not to draft a complete zero? Way to set the bar high.

It’s about weighing the draft as a whole. Keep putting words in my mouth though.

Brissett turning into Dorsett is a better draft pick than a Derek Rivers. There are degrees to a pick being a home run to a bust.

If nothing else, getting so little out of Michel and Harry is killing us right now, yeah.

When you invest that kind of draft capital in skill position guys, and your skill positions ave as little depth as ours currently do, they absolutely have to perform.

I'm not sure drafting Lamar would of helped anyone except the Ravens. John deserves coach of the year for having the balls to totally change the playbook and go with a guy who even this year doesn't look good as a passer. It's way above my knowledge but however they are opening these 1 read throwing lanes for him is pretty cool. This is their window, they need to win this year if they can. Point is - would Bill of done that with Lamar? I don't think so. Bill probably pukes a little bit in his mouth thinking of having a QB play that way for him.
