Marcus Cannon's illness

I’m sure they do. Humor is still allowed even if someone has had cancer.

My brother's astrological sign is cancer, which is ironic given how he died.

He was eaten by a giant crab.

It’s not the patriots. It’s the law. You can’t discuss people’s health issues publicly without express consent.

That is a common misconception. Employers are not bound by HIPPA. Hopefully you'll find the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services to be a credible enough source

I would be surprised an employer publicly discussing an employees health issues is legal regardless of whether its covered by hippa or something else.
I would also imagine as soon as a team doctor examines a player that it would invoke HIPPA but I do not know.

In the sense that the Employers has the right to know why you were out side and can ask you for a doctor's note. Your Employers can't go directly to your health care provider and get the information they want and make it public. I think there is context there.

So explain what by at your are saying
Your argument is Belichick never praised an injured or sick player except cannon when he had cancer.
Belichick praised cannon.
Cannon has had the flu.
The flu sticks around if you have a weakened immune system
cannon had a weakened immune system when he had cancer
You are saying it in a thread where someone suggested a relapse.

So let’s take away assumption, what exactly are you saying?

there is no way cannon or anyone else would be playing if their cancer had returned, or if they were under chemo for it. the whole idea is absurd.

In that instance the provider is the one bound by HIPPA not the employer. My better half spent her professional life in health care, HIPPA was a hot topic in our house when it came into being and remained a more than occasional one thereafter. I'm no expert on it by any means but I certainly know more about it than any engineer should reasonably be expected to. When you're married to a redhead it pays to have at least a passing acquaintance with anything that commands her attention. ;)

Again, the link is there to peruse.

I can understand why you will think it is baseless, but I was just pointing out how the situation looks to. The Patriots protects their players probably more than most people get in witsec and it always amazes when I find out what Patriots players were going through beyond football at the end of a season. Like coming to find out Nate Solder played a whole season in which he won a super bowl after having one of his testicles removed just before the season started and was doing periodic checks throughout the season.

That's fine, but when you make a thread puking your musings, assume you'll get some sarcastic responses (especially when your musings would have pretty serious implications).

I just went through HIPAA training (among other things) for my new job this past week, and what I can say is that as a software engineer with access to sensitive medical and personal information, I am definitely not allowed to disclose anything I see and HIPAA is the reason. I'm not a healthcare provider, and it's arguable whether the institution I'm working at would be considered one, so I don't think it's as simple as "the only people bound to HIPAA are medical providers."

Edit for context: I can only speak as someone working in Massachusetts.

HIPAA governs some disclosure laws but there's privacy rights when employers have a need to know established by statute or collective bargaining (e.g. sick leave, FMLA, reasonable accommodations under the ADA). If they then disclose to someone outside a need to know, that may be a EEO violation. But EEO generally depends upon outcome.

No one said his cancer returned. There are ongoing effects from treatments that can last years from previous cancers that weaken an immune system. It is what it is. Radiation/chemo and lots of other treatments offer times have long lasting side effects on the body’s organs for the rest of the patient life even if the cancer is fully gone. It’s basic biology.

Pretty much anyone in any field who has access to personal information is barred by one law or another from sharing it publicly.
If you apply for a credit card, the person taking your application can’t hold a press conference and announce your social security number, for example. If you are disciplined at your job for insubordination, your boss can’t tell your neighbor, etc etc

I hate you for that joke but mostly out of the shame I feel for laughing at it.

And I am offended because I have a sister who actually was a victim of giant crab violence and don’t think it’s a funny topic. :D

There's a cream for that.

Chris

I hope it's not the Jamie Collins thing.

He had non-hodgkins leukemia 8-9 years ago, its hard for me to believe that all of a sudden he maybe feeling side effects. everyone reacts differently to illness, meds, treatment etc. for instance I came back from new orleans last may I returned with some cold like symptoms, I would cough and cough and had to constantly had to clear my throat, it lasted six weeks. I finally stopped by my Dr's. office and was told something was going around and that in some cases with some people it lingered for weeks. So it could be that he was hit especially hard by what ever it was he caught.

The treatment side effects - - -Not the treatments on their own!!!

The Flu possibly ADDED on to a weakened immune system could be the concern. I have a client who had cancer treatments and it was very successful - - however he now has a weakened heart condition caused by the treatment. A bad bug would affect him differently than it would someone without that side effect. He fully knows this.

As I said, hopefully, it was just a really terrible bug that he is getting over very slowly just because it was a terrible bug. But reports are that at least 9 other Patriots had it.

1) Cannon is the only one BB singled out on November 24 as heroically dealing with it

2) Cannon is the only one that still has "illness" 3 weeks later.

3) He's the only one that had chemo 8 years ago (and chemo affects the organs and immune system going forward).

Again, hopefully it was just the bug alone and that he is fully cleared of it very soon. But the OP is not far afield to wonder.
