Are the Patriots really this Terrible

I'm curious what position people think the Patriots are best at drafting and the difference between that position and WR's is. That would give this thread a bit of context.

Offensive Line (although tough to separate drafting from development there)

Linebacker

Quarterback

Lots of us were here when the franchise was "normal" and worse...were you here? I was in that schitthole stadium watching Doug Flutie run around beating Tampa in the freezing cold in 1989 at the high school stadium in Foxboro on RT 1

One constant at Foxboro has always been the traffic. It sucked back then and it still does today.

34% -- Fantastic!
59% -- Below Average
88% -- Cut him

How can those percentages and corresponding comments possibly be true and make any sense?

34% -- great batting average for a baseball player
59% -- below average pass completion % for a QB
88% -- bad save percentage for an NHL goalie

Without any context for comparison, how can we possibly make intelligent conclusions about what is a good or bad number when it comes to drafting players? We can't even agree on what is a successful draft pick, and have absolutely no benchmark to compare with 31 other teams.

Yet year after year, we as fans - and the sports media as well - is willing to make a definitive statement and conclusion based on nothing more than arbitrary biased anecdotal evidence.

The draft is a crap shoot and the Pats are at the top just for drafting Brady at all, let alone at #199.

Fixed it for ya, old timer ;)

It's so easy to cast yourself as the adult in the room by saying, "Well, we don't know what Harry will do in the future." Well, no **** Sherlock. All we can do is judge what we've seen up to now. And up to now it is not encouraging. You talk about him being Anquon Boldin. Well, Anquon Boldin had 100 catches as a rookie! Was the game too fast for him to run routes?
I’m guessing you’re referring to me since I made that comp recently. I said his ceiling was Anquan Boldin. His floor is utter **** and a bust. Nobody said he was Boldin. Just that their games were similar.

If you can't criticize anything the Patriots do because they won 6 SBs, what are we doing here? Sure, if someone says "Belichick sucks as a coach," then citing his overall success is relevant. But citing his SBs as a defense against a very specific criticism is illogical and childish. You can win 6 SBs without being perfect at every single thing you have done in your life. Stop being obtuse (warden).

Harry's also played just 3 games. He missed a lot of time. If people are judging him on three games, I just don't know what to say.

I, uh, agree? Do you need some lithium?

He's only played three games. What else can we judge him on, our hopes and dreams? As soon as he plays his fourth game, I'll add it to the data set as I form my opinion. I don't make predictions. I'm just telling you what my impressions are based on the available evidence.

Put it this way, if I asked you before the season what your expectations for our first receiver drafted in the first round in the Belichick era, I'm guessing you wouldn't have said, "Well, I'm hoping he looks bad in practice, gets damned with faint praise by everyone, gets IR'd for a minor injury to free up a roster spot, then looks completely useless when he finally makes the field."

No, you were hoping he was going to help this offense score points. This year. Everyone was.

Given how little he's played, we can give the guy a little time and a little slack before he gets labeled.

No one is asking for "predictions" or criticizing "impressions." I'm asking that someone not be judge on three games in a complex system.

Put it this way, if you would have judged Julian Edelman on his first season he would have been labeled a bust. Jakobi Meyers is probably going to wind up having better rookie season numbers than Jules did. Nevertheless, I'm guessing no one would label Edelman a bust now.

Trust me when I tell you I'm not one of these malcontents that cheers against the team just to be miserable. I hope you're right and he still turns out great. I just had higher hopes for him than what I've seen so far.
