OT:"It's Matt Patricia's version of Detroit Lions football, and it's driving us to madness"

I used to stick up for him (which I am sure mattered a lot to him) but it's getting harder and harder to do that seeing how as soon as he left the defense stopped being so porous. Sure he didn't have a top-of-his-game Gilmore but he had Revis and others and we still shat the bed.

If Flores or Mayo/Li'l Bill were our DCs in 2017 we're looking for a 4th SB in a row.
The defense allowed more points last year than each of patricias last 4 seasons.
They also had more terrible games allowing 34,34,31,26 in losses.
They did get it fixed for the playoffs though.

It's hard to defend MattyP when you see how SBLI went vs SBLII.

I carried water for Matt for a long time but I do not miss him, I can tell you that much.

Hard to reduce 6 years to 1 game. Particularly when we won 2 championships in his tenure after going 10 years in between.
I kind of judge by overall success rather than attaching credit or blame for it.

I was just thinking that the Lions could use another reboot.

Patricia is such a bad defensive coordinator he made a lot of people in NE think Chandler Jones wasn't any good.

What? There was never any question over how good Jones was. And if he sucked that badly, how did they win two Super Bowls during his tenure here then, numbnuts?

Eh, this board talked a lot of trash about him last year saying he wasn’t at Flowers level....seriously.

That’s PatsFans.com. But that was last year, and Jones was already off the team. That answer is also wholly irrelevant. How did Patricia “make a lot of people in NE think Chandler Jones wasn't any good?”

@Marqui will be able to answer that question better than I can.

I think he was an overall good defensive coach, but I didn’t like his style. Felt like he overcomplicated things when the defense had big advantages they didn’t use. At the same time, his overall results were certainly sound. In 2014, I believe the Patriots did now allow a fourth quarter TD after week 8 or so. But I also look at that roster and question why they weren’t the best defense in the league, or right next to Seattle. They were absolutely loaded.

As some have pointed out, there were some puzzling matchup decisions. Rowe on Jeffrey. The Manning AFCCG. I was also screaming at the television to put someone bigger on Chris Matthews...no idea how a professional defensive coordinator couldn’t immediately figure out that a seven inch height advantage can’t be coached by “technique.” I’d add the stubbornness in keeping Revis singled up on Steve Smith in the AFCDG in 2014...I don’t think anyone can could cover that guy alone.

Seemed like a guy who can bandaid a terrific game plan to keep a great offense to 24 points, but one who also allows 24 to a terrible one. I don’t know the Xs and Os enough, but that was my perception.

I vividly remember the general sentiment about Jones while he was here from people on this board and in the area being that he was "overrated" and "disappears in the playoffs" and "Ninkovich is a better player". I was like the only one that believed he was a great player regardless.

In the 6 years before that:
76-20 regular season
6-5 post season
2 SB
Zero championships.
It is possible for success to result from collaboration rather than one individual's efforts. Belichick is the glue that holds the coaching staff together but his success is due as much to having good people around him as football iq.

Agreed. I just posted the numbers anyone can conclude what they wish.
Mine is the team was very successful with Patricia as DC.

While we watch MB struggle in Detroit it points to the difficulty in creating a "winning culture and attitude" for any NFL team that has sucked for many years.. I do agree, that MP makes things more difficult than they are..

It also shows how great BB is to have done what he did in a very short time and continued that tradition for 20 years..

I’d get a job with waste management before coaching the lions.

Tough to judge from a distance but it seems like they are close. Injuries have definitely played a part.

Hopefully MP can close out the season in a strong note.

Patricia would have this group play read and react all game long. Teams would be driving up and down the field.

His defense was always a heart attack special especially late in the 4th quarter.
