I used to look forward to Bedard on 98.5...

I KNOW corpulence personally...:(

Damn it...I had to google corpulence...I wish I hadn't, I now have another word for myself...dagnabbit

God he loves his voice. With the pauses between sentences...

This is a side effect of having a show where you're the only real host. It was the biggest reason (of many) that I couldn't STAND Jim Rome's radio show. It was just him talking to no one for hours, pausing between takes where someone should have been there to banter, but instead he just waiting for his next breath to talk. Infuriating, boring radio.

I like Cowherd for the most part, but like you I'm only ever listening to specific bits (under 10 minutes usually) about topics I'm interested in. If I tried to listen to the whole show, I'd probably like him less.

Oh, come on, man. You even say in your above post you were aiming it at me, as you call me a homer. LMAO

I accept all criticisms of the team. Newsflash: They're not perfect. You on the other hand post your laughing emoji when someone mentions Lombardis and the teams current record. That's not a fan. Is it? How can it be?

That's your interpretation of what he said. And I'll let peers here judge between the two of us as to who's got the twisted mind.

Well, MORE twisted. :)
Fans of teams are SUPPOSED to be homers. The word “fan” is short for “fanatic”. We aren’t supposed to be neutral & impartial.

I’ve heard some attempt to claim “ I’m a fan of football”

Ok, that would mean you’re not a true fan of your team. Can’t have it both ways

a good test to gauge the level of fanaticism is to see if said person posts on a team Messageboard. And then look at how many posts said person has made along with how long they’ve been a member!

If it’s > 10 years and over 40k posts, we know who they really are!:D

Coulda been worse, flatulence for instance

Anyone know any alternatives to 98.5? Podcasts, Youtube channels? Just sick of it on the early morning commute.

I left continuous sports analysis behind in general, and moved on to more music, culture podcasts, and things along those lines. I've found (personally, this may not be the case for everyone), that I enjoy sports way more when I'm not constantly saturated by the nuts and bolts of it every free minutes I have. I get over losses faster because I don't have to hear the hawt takes on the radio about it the next day. I look forward to games, even with teams I don't think can win, because I haven't been told for weeks that there's no hope.

I stick around here because, despite a few consistent headaches, this is a pretty balanced place. I know it doesn't seem that way if you're on one extreme or another, but for 90% of the posters here I think you'll see a healthy mix of people that agree and people that don't (sometimes REALLY don't). Plus it helps being able to interact and counter points, rather than just have to listen on the radio and get mad when they're not seeing something you're seeing.

All in all, I haven't answered your question really, but that's my two cents :D

Bedard's being pretty straight up on this. Naturally, the team homers find this problematic.

But Bedard is who he is. He's a hit or miss analyst who focuses more on line play than most, wh'so historically blamed Brady for things that were the fault of other players (he's mostly not doing that this year, because the problems elsewhere have been so obvious), and who doesn't suffer the foolishness of Felger/Mazz particularly well.

He's not anywhere near perfect and, if you find yourself too often in agreement with him, you can bet you're getting some stuff wrong, but the O.P. is way off base.

The fact that you have an equal number of 'likes' and 'dislikes' for this post at least seems to suggest that he's at least effective as radio host in making at least SOME IMPRESSION (whether good or bad) on people.

The worst thing for a radio host is to be tuned out or not noticed.

Nah, just rightfully happens when a poster says the Pats can’t win anything without AB...and repeats the nonsense 100 different times.

I didn’t say that. It would be foolish for me to say that when we’re 10-1. Clearly and self-evidently we can win without AB. I said AB was chucked out hastily and he can help this team if he was on the roster.

Pardon my take and the Bill Simmons podcast are fun. As is Mike Lombardi's new podcast the GM shuffle (if you're looking for more high level analysis vs just a fun listen like the first two I listed).

The Ringer NFL show is okay, it's knowledgeable but the host can be pretty pretentious.

I agree, dislikes = zero from a point standpoint, so I'm with you, people are definitely fine to use them. I've got a few as well ;)
But aren’t they functionally ALL zero?? It’s not like the points actually matter for anything, right?

Yes, you can have it both ways. Homers don't define fandom.

They do, just not how you define it.

Perhaps there are two kinds of followers:

1. The kind who focus on the win first, then look and say “they need improvement here” or “thank heaven they won despite ( )”.

2. The kind who do the reverse: whatever happened in the game as a Pats negative is focused on heavily... with the win being almost an afterthought.

Ergo... you have fans...

...and you have schlep-fans. :)

EDIT: I'm kidding here a little... also, the tension between the neg-firsts and the pos-firsts makes for interesting threads. But I do admit that I can't fathom how people can get so down on their team after a win. o_O

You may have misunderstood how I was using the word "define". Homers are just a subset of fandom. They're not fandom. Not all fans are homers.

JMHO Bedard is better than most covering the team. He often has great insights into what darkhorses will make the team in training camp and his analysis is good more often than not.

The problem with Bedard is he reaches to offer unique observations and on the many swing and misses he looks like a buffoon.

This week on the radio show, Felger wiped the floor with Bedard when Greg suggested the Pats offense was not good enough to win a Super Bowl. It was sad. You really are off, when Felger buries your point.

It's not about the courage of being critical of the team. It's about picking your spots better when the team you are covering is right as often as the Patriots are. Bedard used to know this.

He's like the Andy Reid of sportswriters. When Greg Bedard's over his head he looks worse than he is.

Well I’ve been a member for almost 10 years. As for 40k posts. Wow, I’m only 2k. That’s a lot of “AB needs to join Pats” posts I have to make before I can join the super-fan club. Better get to work......
