This team has failed to develop receivers for so many years it’s almost comical. The last time a non-free agent receiver actually played well through his rookie contract was Deion Branch. Remember, even Edelman was going to walk in 2013 for peanuts, having never developed under Brady because Welker got all the reps.

So I am glad Brady will be FORCED to use Meyers and Harry, two of the more promising rookie receivers we’ve had in a while. Maybe it’s going to take a loss, some miscommunication, a couple of interceptions, but Brady needs to start developing younger players or the team will continue to roll with a bunch of veteran scratch tickets every year and a prayer that Edelman doesn’t regress (though he should have by now based on his age.). It had been years of band aids and reliance on superstars to cover up a weak WR development system between Brady and talented young WRs who need actual experience to improve.

I did not feel this way in 2013 about Thompkins and Dobson, though the team did still manage to be one of the top scoring offenses in the league. But I am excited that finally Brady will be forced to trust the younger guys. Sanu is a good player, but giving up a second round pick for him shows the level of desperation this team has gotten at WR. Let me reiterate that in an alternate universe, Edelman signs with the Giants in 2013 and we never knew what he could have become, despite four years of practicing with Brady.

This could be an a embarrassing face-plant on offense and loss. It could also finally be the game where the offense forges an identity. It’s up to Harry and Meyers, but equally, it is up to Brady and McDaniels.

Gut feeling we will be running the ball most of the game...

THANK GOODNESS THE TEAM'S WR CORPS GOT EVEN WORSE! /Ice Ice Brady

You'd think they could simplify the offense a bit to accommodate who they have to work with, but that also might put players like Edelman, Watson (also Brady) at a disadvantage. At times like this the Pats passing game might be hamstrung from being TOO sophisticated.

Glad wouldn't be the phrase I would use but I understand your point.

The kids have an opportunity the get some much-needed combat experience on the battlefield.

Hopefully they can rise to the occasion. If they can't....god help them.

Who do you recon bares the majority of the responsibility in developing WRs? Brady? Or is it our process as an organization in identifying legit NFL talent? The Steelers do it every year in late rounds to measure.

No one is out for the season. The other guys will be available soon. If Harry and/or Meyers has a huge game and changes the way teams have to defend the Patriots, that’s a good thing. We already know Sanu and Dorsett are not good enough to do that. Sanu, maybe slightly, but he’s more of a threat to beat you for six yards. They really need someone who can burn you deep or get some YAC.

I suspect Brady but don’t know.

We have gone from "Tom Brady makes receivers better" to "It's Tom Brady's fault that these kids suck/aren't ready, and he must be forced to throw to them". That tells us just how ridiculous this board can get.

Your notion of it being good that players who aren't ready get thrown in the fire while the team is just one game away from losing HFA is ridiculous.

100% agree... I want the Pats to win, and they have a better chance on paper with Sanu and Dorsett than without.

But hopefully the kids will show something... after all, it is said...

...well, it is said everywhere except the game day thread. :)

So Edelman wasn’t worth re-signing in 2013 for more than a one-year lowball offer and it was a good move to practically let the the Giants get him for nothing? It’s never that Brady/Josh/Belichick are capable of misevaluating potential or players not being given actual chances to succeed?

I think good players do well, it's that simple. Dobson, Thompkins, Boyce, Price, most of the guys that didn't do well here had their chances and just weren't that good and left the league. Dobson was forced balls but at the end of the day just wasn't hat good.

I can't recall any drafted wr's leaving here and doing good else where. If Harry and Meyer's don't succeed my opinion is that it will be on them and not the QB or McD.

I'm with you though, excited to see how these guys do being forced the ball for a game. The last 2 times Meyers had to step into a 2/3 wr roll he caught I believe 100% of his targets over 2 games 9 catches for 100yds about.

I think when he gets legit NFL talent he is able to work with them. MM came good in the season no? it was very sad and unfortunate that his knee could not hold up.
I think our WR scouting has been piss poor. Brady's game needed someone like Deebo and I also suspect Deebo may have the better career. I will be happy to be wrong though.

Run the ball more is the answer but we are not exactly doing well in that dept either ?

Cool. I’ve been saying all year that Meyers should play over Dorsett. Sanu has 4 yards on 4 targets last week. Really dying on a hill for players who have led to the frustration in the first place. Give the rookies a chance. Maybe they’ll get better results.

From what I’ve heard, the Cowboys play zone almost exclusively. I like Harry big time in that situation. The concern usually is that he can’t get separation on man.

.

Oh , I agree with ice , give them the opportunity in more than one game ! or is it back to signing experienced players and hang a sign in draft week.....rookie receivers need not apply:p

They have who they have......as the great BB says “can’t worry about who’s not here’

if Brady doesn’t like it, he can sit the f*ck down

Can anyone think of a time in Patriots history when a starter got injured and they realized the backup is better?
