Patriots Midseason grades

Hasn't Jake Bailey been pretty poor as a kick-holder? I don't think he deserves an A because his job isn't just being the punter.

I think Mayers deserves a better grade than C. He cought 14 of 17 passes and when he is on the field he is trustworthy and very consistent. Not his fault he is rarely on the field although his connection with Brady is getting better.

Thanks for taking the time to create the report card , no real disagreements as far as I can see across the board. Just seems to confirm that this season our offence is not at the same level as the defence. Offensive line struggles just highlight Michel performance....we have a running game that is not adding much at the moment

Already time for the Edelman drop conversation?

Edelman currently shares the lead, per PFF, in number of dropped passes by WRs (and all skill players, when search expanded - he has 7, tied with Michael Gallup). However, he is ranked 22nd in drop% against other WRs only and 31st against other skill players. Note search filtered to remove those players with lowest number of targets.

Of players with more than 70 targets (there are currently 7), Edelman ranks 6th in targets (77), 1st in number of drops (7), 1st in drop% (11.7) and 5th in catch % (68.8%). The player closest to Edelman? Keenan Allen - 5 drops, with a drop % of 8.9%.

What is actually quite amusing, kind of, is that Edelman actually only ranks 5th in drop % on the Patriots this year - behind LaCosse, Michel, Watson and Gordon...

I wont release my grades until after we play the utterly prestigious Baltimore Ravens, aka the measuring stick of professional sports teams. Until then who knows what we have

Monster Inc. and the Pats are Boo.

Look where he is usually targeted, too. Pretty tough neighborhood.

Michel C+ He hasn't run as well this year and last year. His inability to catch is annoying. Still, he isn't as bad as his stats say.

Izzo C- He can catch okay, but for a who can't block it isn't good enough IMO
Watson N/A Needs more games.

Newhouse D- Everyone's favorite whipping boy. As bad as he has been I don't think he deserves an F.
Thuney A- The best offensive player to this point for the Pats besides maybe Brady.
Karras C No one seems to mention those high slow snaps anymore. He can't run block but he hasn't allowed much pressure up the middle.
Mason C+ A bad year for him in the run game. He's still pass blocking well enough though.
Cannon C Was having a C- year before the Browns game. He did well there considering.
Except for Watson of course, and perhaps Thuney, the rest of the above grades are too generous - and in many cases, Way too generous.

Really ...from you? I am shocked I tell you ...SHOCKED! Why are they 8-1 ?

Isn't Brady B+ though

This is less about the grades and more the reasoning behind them:

Simon C+ He has held the edge very well but not a ton of pass rush

I don't get this rating at all. Would you have given Ninkovich the same grade for doing what he does ?

Karras C No one seems to mention those high slow snaps anymore. He can't run block but he hasn't allowed much pressure up the middle.

Also don't agree with this here. The high snaps were mostly fixed within a week and he does his job well to the point that you don't really notice him for most of the game.

Hightower B+ He does a lot of things really well and is maybe having his best year. That being said weaknesses in his game have simply not been exploited yet.

He is imo the key player up front and had a great season so far. I think you are underrating him. His weaknesses are not being exploited because of proactive personnel choices that give fewer chances to expose your LBs on quick skilled players.

Shelton was horrendous the past two games. He’s one of the biggest reasons the D has been gashed by the run by McCoy, Chubb and Ingram. He’s being destroyed on way too many plays and not just by elite OL like Yanda.

Two comments:

HT is an A. He does so many things that don't show up on the stat sheet,IMO.

And I think Michel has more catches this year already than he did all of last year, no?

He had 7 receptions last year

so yeah in 9 games this year he’s equaled his output from last year in the receiving game. He set the bar so low you could trip over it

After careful thought and using my own grading system, I give the team as a whole an 8-1 grade.

Nice to see a post from you Mr Nut...seems like it's been awhile?
