Breaking: Mike Nugent exits, no longer has a good job

I don’t really blame him for the blocked fg. Bad conditions etc. the one he missed though.. laces were out bad kick. There was a reason he wasn’t in the league. I just hope he continues to improve

Time to pull out the rolodex and see who may be the appropriate candidate for Nugent, who will probably be gone sooner than later..

Maybe. But who is out there ? Koo who we had on the practice squad has zero experience with kicking in actual weather. With Nugent at least you are somewhat consistent with XPs and shorter kicks. At least you can work with that.

Point being it really is a difficult situation. And a reminder how spoiled we have been with our kicking situation.

His protection unit, not so much. On the block, the guy who was supposed to set the edge of the formation (you know, one of the most important positions after the long snapper, kicker and holder) was sleeping the entire time. Heck, he didn't come out of his stance until well after the ball was snapped.

things change fast in life.

I think you should check the play again and you might see that Guy was responsible for 2 people and stayed with the inside guy. This makes sense as not doing that opens up an even shorter route to a block.

Just because Guy was closest Patriots player to the Browns player who blocked it it doesn't automatically follow that it was his responsibility.

...and then keep the rolodex out so you can do the same thing when Nugent's successor crashes and burns. Justin Tucker is not walking through that door.

So when does the thread title get changed to, "Breaking: Mike Nugent Exists"?

A lot is being made of the misses, and the fact that they turned down the longer kicks. But the conditions were pretty rough last night, and even when it died down the field was still a mess. No excuses, but I doubt Nugent had a lot of confidence in his footing and it threw off his mechanics. Not to mention it seemed like both Karras and Cardona had a challenge keeping the snaps as sharp as they'd like, and the whole timing of the operation is going to be off.

I know the Pats aren't going to attempt a lot of 50+ yarders with Nugent in general, but combine his range with poor conditions (and trust that your defense can stop a team on a short field), and it just makes tactical sense for the Pats to go for it last night. Nugent has been fine for what he is, and unless last night happens consistently, I doubt we're finding a better option at this point, barring a miracle.

When the offense goes for 4th down near the red zones you know there’s a problem. I don’t know what alternatives are out there but I hope he gets better.

But that's what it's all about getting hundreds of thousands of dollars to kick balls in New England -- half the season is played in suboptimal conditions. Nugent is a below-average kicker who literally changes offensive game plans. Going forward the best we can hope from with this guy is extra points and field goals inside the 30-yard-line.

Why? He's still doing a good job for what he is, an emergency replacement kicker. You're not going to find the Steven Gostkowskis of the world on the waiver wire and the in-season FA list.

For a fill-in guy, he's been fine, and if he had an off night in pretty bad field conditions, that's really only to be expected

that's all we should have been hoping for in the first place. If you didn't go into the Mike Nugent experience expecting this team to go for it on 4th and long at the 40, I don't honestly know what you were thinking at the time.

I understand all of that, I'm just not seeing the benefit of trying somebody new just the for the sake of it, hoping they won't have the same limitations. Unless he's missing two 30 yarders every game (in optimal conditions), I don't see starting over with someone new as being a worthwhile strategy.

Probably not at this stage of the season, agreed. As fans we just need to get used to going for it on fourth down where Gostkowski would be brought in to kick. The placekicker situation likely won't be adequately addressed 'til next year.

In case it wasn't clear, it was a joke. :)

The Nuge, as usual, did a fantastic job. Difficult conditions to kick in, but he excelled. Gost would have missed every FG and XP attempt last night.

He is not fine. Let's stop pedaling this narrative. We may not be able to do much better but Nugent is going to cause us trouble if we need to pass up 45 yard kicks in favor of going for it on 4th and 5 each time with an offense that remains a work in progress. In a close game it is more than feasible that this going to really hurt us.

Nugent has basically been your typical bad kicker off the street, who peaks at making most of his PATs. It's not Literally the Worst, but it's pretty bad.

Makes it so much worse that we can't convert in red zone...
