By my count this week:

Acquired Sanu, Bethel
Cut/trades/IR = Richards/Gordon/Bennett

Who is the missing player?

There is no “missing player”. It is a 52. On Monday, Harry will make it 53.

The team has no good reason to do that (go into a game with a roster below 53), and I've seen no reports saying that's the case.

But I don't believe you can play an NFL game with a 52 man roster.

It has to be against the rules.

It's not, but it's heavily discouraged by restricting how many players you can have on your practice squad without a full 53 man roster. Might be the other way around though, not sure.

Now that Ufomba Kamalu is gone, this may not matter anymore

It's at 52 right now.

I hope we still trade for a TE and open roster spots for Harry and Wynn. That would put us at 55 having to release 2 players. Probably Cunningham and LaCosse.

I think I recall BB having a roster down by one player in the past but I'm not sure. It's just one less player to deactivate to get to 45. I still think (hope?) that BB is not done adding talent to the roster.

Summary of the rules here.
NFL roster cuts: How does the practice squad work, what does it mean for the Patriots?

I believe @AlexB is correct. Kamalu was the only player they had who was on a PS for the 3rd season. Obi and Munson are 3rd year players but spent year 1 on active rosters, it’s only year 2 for PS purposes. So the Pats can keep their roster at 52 this weekend.

Why would they do that? If player 53 is going to be inactive anyway, why sign player 53? It saves on cap space which is precious right now. Harry will be activated next week. If they promote a PS guy and then cut him, he’ll be subject to waivers which risks the team not being able to resign him to the PS. There really isn’t any upside here but there is potential downside. Not worth it (assuming player 53 would be inactive Sunday).

It all makes sense, but I can't recall this happening before.

And I can't believe the players association doesn't require a full roster each week.

It has happened before but not in a few years. I can’t recall the specific case I’m thinking of though. Most years the Pats have a 3rd year PS guy which prevents it from happening.

I agree with you on the NFLPA comment, but there’s a lot of things they allow that I can’t believe they would.

I'm not concerned about it. Why bother adding another guy when you're going to have to deactivate him anyway? If they had 7-10 guys who were questionable and we didn't know if they could go on not that would be another story, but I'm sure he already has his 46 set to go this week in his head as well as a few last minute alternates.

It is not a matter of being concerned. If Kamalu hadn't been claimed off the Practice Squad, BB would have been required to add a 53rd player to make the squad a 53 man squad.

Clearly, we have no need to pay an additional payer cap money this week. If forced to, BB would likely have activated a STer from the Practice Squad.
