Pats Sign Special Teams Standout Justin Bethel

Yes, we could use a swing OT.

As far as a starter, we'll have one after the bye.

...As would getting a Professional FB and a LT who doesn't suck.

Can you please explain this more? Why does the Titans releasing Urban take away the compensatory pick from the Ravens? Does the player being released devalue them?
The Ravens expected that their 5 qualifying departures and 3 qualifying additions would give them 2 comp picks. However, since Urban (who is a Ravens departure) only lasted 6 weeks with the Titans instead of the 10 required to qualify, that then left the Ravens with 4 departures, 3 additions, and just the 1 comp pick. By releasing Bethel, they’re now at 4 departures, 2 additions, and again the 2 comp picks.

Because of the high contract value of their departures, those two picks are projected by Nick Korte at OverTheCap to be a 3rd and 4th. The 4th rounder would have been lost if they had kept Bethel. He’s probably still a Raven right now if it had only been a 6th or 7th at stake instead of the 4th.

Thanks. I hadn’t understood what that was about, and your explanation made it clear.

Seems the Raves are AFU on it though, a fourth round pick is still a crapshoot with a fairly low probability of success and an upside that best case might get them a player as good as the one they just cut. Albeit on a cheaper rookie contract.

We have absolutely No idea whatsoever if that is actually going to happen.

I guess, worse case scenario, we get intel.

No offense because you are a very good poster, but this is the most overrated notion in the NFL. Everyone pretty much knows what everyone else does.

Love the thought. Build dominant coverage units and what looks to be a stud punter in the making to go along with the dominant d. If the offense struggles in a January game, field position is critical and can swing a game.

Yes, I agree. Overrated.

But I believe there are small tendencies that can be gleaned from it.
Small, and not game changing, but a little.
It definitely doesn't hurt.:D

Some teams don't morph as well as the Pats game plans do,

Of course that is just this casual fans opinion.

Two best-in-class gunners and a best-in-class punter with great hang time. That combo is probably worth 10 yards of field position each punt.

I'm guessing teams will be forced to double-team both our gunners. That means they will only have six rushers, and our personal protector and center can both release immediately into coverage. That means the gunners impact the play indirectly as well as directly.

Giving Bethel a 2year contact is right, even if Slater was also locked up for next year.

.

Slater is a UFA next year so good business locking Bethel in in case Slate calls it a career.

I wonder if the Raves would have cut him if they knew the Pats would sign him.

More importantly, it had to be Bethel because he was a UFA signing. Urban was also an UFA signing, which is why it affected Bethel and only Bethel.

Ravens must really have someone targeted with that 4th round pick to let go of such a valuable asset. It's not like Bethel was at the tail end of his career. Bit of a head scratcher if you ask me.

We now not only have the best defense in the league, we frankly have the best ST as well.

TBF, Belichick has a couple of those, like cutting Brandon Bolden last year and expecting to re-sign him, only for him to go to MIA.

Do most teams totally under value core ST players. This guy was out there for the taking and he got to the Patriots. When Brandon King went down in the pre season I was bummed. Looks like we got a Christmas gift early
