Schefter: Just based on the facts...Brady thinking/setting up to leave NE

I just want to know the missing part of the equation here, if Schefter is aware of something behind public facts. He is not one to speculate and stake his reputation on guesses, and despite him claiming this is just speculation, he knows that’s not how this will be interpreted. He’s saying he thinks Brady doesn’t want to play for the Patriots, or the Patriots don’t want Brady.

1. It makes no sense for Brady to go to another team from a competitive standpoint. No team is even close to the Patriots in terms of supporting cast and coaching.

2. Let’s remember that most athletes, and the ones Brady likely named, like Farve, Manning and Montana, were forced out because of a younger emerging superstar. The Patriots do not have that, unless you think Stidham is the chosen one. I don’t buy it. In addition, the Patriots have a lot of legacy stake in Brady retiring with the team.

3. So given that a breakup is irrational for both sides, his leads me to believe that if there is information that Schefter has, it has something to do with a personality/ ego/ control situation like the reports in 2017. I do not think Brady or Belichick care about “proving” they can win without the other...that’s totally unsupported. Here are the potential divides that I could see:

Speculation A. Brady feels disrespected that the Patriots didn’t give him the long term extension he wanted. It comes back to the Guerrero rift again, where Brady believes wholeheartedly he can play until 45, and the team doubting him as a slap in the face to his whole belief system and TB12 Inc. He wants security and feels he’s earned it, and he basically said this politely after the contract was signed. Remember, this is a guy who feeds off of doubt, and that point should not be underestimated..this is the first time his own team has been the doubters, in his mind.

Speculation B. Brady wants to have a lot more leeway with his football/personal time at his age. Some older vets QBs have worked out deals where they had a lot of personal days. Belichick may be unwilling to do that, whereas other coaches may be (and beyond that, the grind of playing for NE is different from the laid back atmosphere of some other organizations.). I believe they could have kept Gronkowski if they had allowed for preferential treatment.

Speculation C. Both sides are just posturing as much as possible as a normal contract standoff and plan to continue working together. Brady doesn’t want to get lowballed, and the team doesn’t want to concede that they will pay anything to keep him. You have the ultimate game of chicken here, though sometimes these things blow up in the wrong direction once the reality of free agency begins.

Point D (not speculation). I honestly don’t think Brady has an answer for whether or not he wants to retire. This just adds more fuel to the fire for the Patriots position of not being sure if they want to commit. However, I think the Patriots are protected financially if Brady does retire early, and it’s not like they have some elite QB they’re passing on by giving him a multi-year extension.
Here's the thing that I think most people are missing in the "Brady will leave the Pats for another team after this year" narrative.

It makes no sense on him leaving for another team. Just ask this question. Which Brady would win more games in 2020? The Brady who plays for the Pats, or the Brady who plays for ANY other team in the league. I don't think anyone of sound mind would bet a single dollar on the 2nd option.

Does Brady want his final legacy to be the one who fails in the playoffs like the dismal attempts of Joe Montana and others. And don't forget his wife. Gisselle wanted him off the field back in 2016. She's made concessions for the last 3 years. Now she's got him to the point where he no longer has any contractual obligations to Kraft and Pats and he can move on to the next portion of his life.

So while I can fully see the media speculating about Brady's future in the league, the thought of him playing for someone else, is a FAR distant #3 option, to the point of it not being realistic.

It’s all foo lights, loons, and swamp gas. If we win the super bowl again this year. Maybe he does retire. I say he still has one season left in him but who can say?

I don't watch ESPN. My only contact with Schefter is following him on Twitter, where he comes across as a strong and credible reporter. In that context, I'm surprised to see him go all talk-show hype=y speculation like he does in that video.

That would be completely out of character for Schefter. He bats about .999 when it comes to getting the inside scoop correct. He is careful no to exaggerate or even make predictions unless he is nearly certain they will happen. He obviously knows something more about the situation, just like he nailed the Jimmy G. situation when he said Jimmy G. would not be traded in the 2017 offseason unless someone offered a king's ransom; sure enough, the Patriots demanded a king's ransom and he didn't get traded. He clearly has at least one, if not multiple, sources within the Patriots organization who really know what's going on with the Patriots and Brady. They may have given him the info under the condition that he can't reveal the details because they don't want another in-season sht storm controversy about some rift between Brady and Belichick/management. He isn't a "hot take" guy who just throws out random theory and then doubles down on it.

Important to note he is not saying: Brady WILL NOT be back with the Patriots either. He has reason to believe at the moment Brady is leaning towards retiring or playing somewhere else. I wish he would drop some more hints as to what's going on.
I agree Schefter is reputable -- or was, anyway. I trust NFL Network Schefter a lot more than I trust ESPN Schefter. Just knowing how the networks operate, I'm guessing Schefter had more autonomy with NFL Network, and he's probably asked to push a narrative a lot more on ESPN. That's not a knock on Schefter so much is it on ESPN and their agenda as a whole. Also, Schefter being connected/having sources and him embellishing stories to generate views are not mutually exclusive.

Also, I remember the Garoppolo situation differently than you did. Schefter emphatically said they were not going to trade him. If you listen to this clip below, he says, "they Patriots are not trading Garoppolo. It doesn't matter if they get four firsts, they're not trading him." [That conflicts with ... "not trading him .... unless offered a king's ransom."]:

After the offseason (note the timestamp), he was also asked again about the Patriots long-term plans with Garoppolo, and he answered:

I also don't consider this a hot take. This is a classic journalistic technique of throwing **** against the wall without making any proclamations. He can't be wrong. He outright said, "he's either retiring, leaving New England, or going to another team". Nowhere is he saying Brady will retire or will leave New England, he's just saying it's possible. It's a spineless claim because if he stays in NE he can just say, "well, I never said it will happen, I just said it's a possibility".

I feel like these things always end up working themselves out. Brady wanted long term security they didnt extend him.

If you think Kraft is letting brady go play for somewhere else after this year or retire if brady still wants to play..I've got a bridge to sell you.

Kraft will step up and give brady a 1- 2 year deal

I think it's a fascinating dynamic.

Does Krafty want his legacy to be the owner who let Tom walk?

Does Tom want to be that QB who left The Dynasty to go to Tennessee at 42 years old?

I don't think BB gives a crap. Hes teflon here. He can insulate it as a "It was an ownership decision" or "The player took a better offer. We wish him well".

I think about half of Pats fans will disappear once BB is gone and we come back to the pack. Especially the out of town fans. When I was a kid in late 70s, 80s and early 90s, there were not that many of us...even most of the kids I grew up with in MA and NH didn’t watch them every Sunday, when we were mostly losers under guys like Ron Erhardt, Rod Rust, ****ie Mac....not as much “Entertainment” when we aren’t best team in league....

If I thought that Tom Brady himself had any idea what he was actually going to decide after the season, I'd hazard a guess.

But, selling his house in Brookline, buying a place in Connecticut (i.e., between the two worlds in which he and his family live...while still in NE) and signing a contract that leaves all options open suggest to me that he hasn't made a decision. And, if he has made a decision, I'm pretty sure that we could count on the fingers of one hand the people who know what it is.

Oh God, please make that jacka55 stop already, for fck's sake!

We didn’t get a king’s random for Jimmy. Second, Schefter’s been providing his speculation on Brady’s selling his house even though Tom said there was nothing to it because it’s going to be a while before it’s sold like his house in California.

That’s not what I meant. He said the Patriots would hold out for a kings ransom during the 2017 offseason, which they did, according to the Browns reporters. The Browns said they asked for an excessive amount of draft capital. Thy finally traded JG when the season was halfway over, so the king’s ransom was over by then. Schefter’s point was they really didn’t want to trade him (unless they got a blow away offer) because they wanted to assess Brady vs JG decision for as long as possible.

I agree the house sale thing is weak. But Schefter having resolve on this is a cause for concern. He seems to know more than he is saying, reading the tea leaves, aka well placed sources.

I want them to win....but as I have for >40 years, I'm still going to watch every game.....scoreboard hits 0:00 and its on to the next thing on my agenda

TRust me......half of you would not be here if it weren't for the winning
I guess we are saying that same thing in different ways.

We could all breathe easier if Tom would ditch the Cristiano Ronaldo haircut.

Schefter this morning:

Last time Schefter thought he had a Patriots source like this, with the doubling and tripling down, he was hilariously wrong. Just saying.

Sheftah throwing out the coldz take.

Regurgitated old facts into an open ended opinion which basically says he doesn't know wtf Brady is going to do.

Great job Sheftah.

That may be from the speculation that Kraft overruled Belichick and forced a trade of JG to keep TB12. Not that it changes anything here about potential to be wrong, since once again it involves TB12’s future in NE.

I doubt Brady retires without a "farewell tour" so I expect it'll be a decision made before his last season starts. IMO that leaves only two possibilities for next year, he either stays in Foxboro or moves on and the best place to win a Lombardi is where he is now. I expect him to stay.
