Patriots trade for WR Mohamed Sanu, for a second-round pick

So the Pats inquired about OJ Howard from the Bucs...did they inquire about Cameron Brate too who sees like the Y TE we need??

Brate just signed a 5 year extension. Why would Tampa trade him?

Agreed. But that's not how it's written currently. Hopefully, they league will change it.. They've already changed the rule once. It used to be you had to use the designation when you put the player on the IR. Now, you can wait..
I think the purpose of limiting how many guys you can bring back from the IR is because they are afraid teams will be constantly stashing guys on the IR instead of releasing them. So I don't think they will be changing the rule anytime soon. The best you could hope for might be increasing the number from 2 to 3.

Not sure if we still are talking about the Sanu trade, but if we still are, I have a few brief comments.

1. I don't like the fact that we traded for a WR in the first place. I like it less that if we WERE going to trade for a WR he wasn't a "field stretcher" speed guy. I like it even LESS that if we were going to to trade for a WR we'd do it for a 2nd round pick.

2. Now that I got that out of the way, let me tell you how I REALLY feel. I worry that the fact that Bill felt the need to make this trade for this price, says more about where he feels Gordon and Harry are in their return to the team than the immediate need for a WR.

3. Sanu has been a quality professional his entire career. I'm guessing a pick in the early 60's was the price that it took to get him. Ideally one of the 3rd round comp picks would have done it, but the market IS the market.

4. I would have rather gotten someone like Howard, though I'm cooling on Brate because I'm thinking that's the same as a healthy Lacosse. Howard was the prize for me. I don't understand why TB is so adamant in not trading him. Arians doesn't value TE's, the team isn't going anywhere, and there is a Patriot connection to the FO.

5. In the end we are a better offensive team for having him. But by how much better remains to be seen.

They tried 3 times since 2016 to acquire Sanu. This doesn't smell like desperation for me.

Just maybe the staff knows exactly what role they have in mind for him. Also as others have pointed out they also got 2 years of his services.

I dont think he is talking about the limit but more about how u have to declare someone eligible to get him onto the practice field.

It would make more sense if you'd get 1-2 weeks of practice time and then make the decision to designate or not.

Maybe Arians views Howard as Big TE/WR like Kelce??:)

Hes a solid player who should fit in this offense. Gordon is out until after the bye most likely and Harry wont have to be thrown to the fire now.

Now bill doesnt have to worry about putting gunner out there as a #4 receiver or beating edelman into the ground

This I believe is he exact reason we traded for him. We needed depth and players since Gordon is hurt and Harry still on IR. Plus, it's insurance for Gordon next year. I'm totally fine with it. Sanu is a solid player.

Now if we can only dump Bennett and get a new TE...

overpaying by a round for a need on a SB caliber team is ok with me.

I don’t wanna get rid of Bennett. Just start giving him more snaps. We didn’t get as much pressure from our DEs last night.

Is Sanu worth a 2nd round pick - I do not know.If he is the man who will make our and especially Brady's way to another ring easier - I am in.
Sanu obviously is not a star but in my opinion he could be very productive. During his 3 years in Atlanta he made a progress every year having over 600 yards as WR3. Atlanta is loaded with WR where Jones is a multiple targeted WR. However in this place Sanu could find his role.
What is more he played almost every game in Atlanta so it means he can stay healthy.

You still have to be under the cap though and guys can work out an IR release if they want to be a free agent. I don’t really see the downside.

This Defense with a not yet familiar Michael Bennett is making QB's cringe:eek: just imagine when Bennett gets up to speed Hmmmmm.

Ken, we needed to bring in a quality WR. The group we have is just not good enough. Even with Gordon it did not look good enough. Brady knows it, Belichick knows it. That’s why he brought in such a controversial player in AB and why he sent a second rounder for Sanu. It tells you that they are not confident in what they have and I’d defer to what they think they need.

Great f'n trade. Fits a major need on a Super Bowl contending team. A+

In Bill We Trust

If the Oakland rumors are true, and they don't have a 2nd round pick, then they were probably offering a 3rd. So the Pats had to offer a 2 to get it done, but that's not terrible, because the Pats 2 and the Raiders 3 are probably only 10 spots apart.

BB Is finally buying into PatsFans’ belief that all he does is use 2nd rounders on busts. Way to go, team!
