Hard to do justice to that stinker of a "entertainment experience". I have hated the Jets, just like the rest of you over the last 60 years. But I have to admit that this one set back my hatred meter a few notches. It's been many years since I've seen a more one sided game. Not only from what we saw on the field, but what we saw from the sidelines.
Adam Gase has a few wins over the years over BB, and a few other games that were very competitive. But this game was an example of one side being COMPLETELY out coached from the first play until the last. If I were a Jet fan, or even more importantly, one of his employers, I'd be looking for explanations on why my franchise was so thoroughly embarrassed on national TV.
Gase better be looking for some shovels to bury multiple game balls this week, or something. And while he was at it, I'd suggest he look for some high priced counselling for his QB, who might take a while before he recovers from what occurred last night. This was UGLY. So lets break it down quickly before I lose interest
1 General offensive thoughts - Better, not by much, but better than in previous weeks. More sustained offensive pressure and better rhythm, especially in the first half of the game. The 3 drops we saw in the first half cost us points, but you could see the baby steps that were taken. Unfortunately the second half turned out to be much more choppy as the pass blocking didn't hold up to what we saw earlier in the game.
2. QB - Brady excelled in his short game and was VERY patient as the 8 minute 16 play opening TD drive pointed out. I would have liked to have seen some more chances down the field, but I guess they weren't in the game plan. 250 passing yds was OK as was the 69% completion rate. Still nothing that will make anyone forget what Aaron Rodgers did this weekend, but all in all a very efficient and controlled effort.
3. RB - Nothing to get excited about. 3 TD's will make Sony's FF owners happy, but the 42 yds on 19 carries won't make anyone thrilled who is waiting for the run game to take off. But I can't help but wonder if there may come a point where they'll stop running RIGHT up middle into the teeth of the defense and perhaps try to try off tackle or around the end. That was where most of the running yardage was made.
When did Brandon Boldin become such an accomplished receiver....but he has. And of course, Jame White was his usual effective self as a receiver.
4. OL - The Pass blocking was good to start the game but didn't look as good as the game went on. There weren't any sacks but there could have been. Not only that, the run blocking wasn't moving anyone off the line much.....again.
I didn't think I would be missing Andrews quite as much as we are. Karras doesn't suck, but I never realized just how good David actually was as a Center. We miss him a lot in the run game. We can only hope that Karras will improve as the season wears on. But he isn't the athlete Andrews is.
I'm hoping that Bedards breakdown will show improvement from Mason. Newhouse is what he is, and is doing a yeoman's job. But come the playoffs, we are going to need better. I think Wynn can start practicing after the Cleveland game. That will be big.
5. TE- It will be a while before Ben lives down the ball to the face moment he had. But he make a key 4th down catch Hopefully he will add more as he gets back into it. I'm also hoping he will get his blocking legs under him as well. Neither he nor Tomilson was much of an improvement to the blocking side of the game either from the FB position or when attempting to "wham block". Tomlison was particularly bad, which doesn't bode well for him, since blocking was the main reason we brought him aboard. I know I didn't see much that made me think he'll be here for long.. Big dude, no pop. Of course one week's work shouldn't label someone forever so we will see
6. WR's - Meyers continued to make his mark. He caught everything Brady threw at him 5-5. Showed excellent route running finding the soft spot on a 3rd and long. Dorsett was the same catching 3 of 4 balls for a TD. I wish they had gone to him more. Julian had a big drop at the end of the first half that cost the team points and him about 35 more yds. Not his best night.
General - The Jets have strong Safeties but bad CB's and a better than average front 7. It was a decent test for the offense and they were better than the last time they were out there against a lesser opponent. Baby steps
7. General Defensive thoughts. - I'm going to let others dazzle you all with the amazing things were were seeing. The stats this defense is putting up are just stunning. And they will be readily noted by many. You don't need to see them here.
I think the beauty of what we are seeing is that it is hard to focus on any one, two or three players to say THOSE are the individuals that are making this work. All the work is SO interconnected that, while its the individuals that are getting the picks, sacks and fumbles, the RESULTS are because of how well they are all working so well TOGETHER to disguise and time up their stunts, and coverages.
I think I mentioned it during last week, but it's worth repeating. There are a couple of reasons why this is working so well. One is that the bulk of this defense have been working in this system for several years. 9 of the 11 starters are 28 or older. So while the rest of the league is trending ever younger. BB was once again bucked the trend and has gone OLDER on the defensive side. He also is paying more on the defensive side. I read today where only the Vikings are paying a higher percentage of their cap space on the defensive side of the ball. The Pats are #2.
You can't do this sh!t with the kind of consistency that we are seeing UNLESS you have guys who communicate perfectly, who can disguise what they are doing, and can do it all from completely different alignments. That is a LOT easier to say than to actually execute. You cannot do it if you are running with a majority of 24 and 25 year olds.
I want to point out that on an individual basis NOTHING the Pats are doing is new or unique. An overload blitz is an overload blitz. Zero coverage will always mean there are no safeties protecting deep and everyone is on an island. So like most things in football, there is nothing new under the sun. HOWEVER what is different is that Bill has put together 20 odd guys on defense who he can use almost interchangeably so that it will be extremely difficult for someone to create tendencies to exploit. You can't do it UNLESS you have the kind of experience, communication and TRUST to disguise and execute all the finite details that make it work. There is a REASON why everyone else just simply copies it. They don't have the people to do it.
So, while we haven't played the most talented offenses in the league, this defense IS for real so enjoy it. The Browns and Ravens aren't going to.
General Thoughts - While you enjoyed watching the Pats get free rushers in on Darnald time after time after time, after time, I hope you all appreciate the work Dante does to make sure that happens ever so rarely to Brady. Think about it. Like I said, nothing the Pats do isn't being done by other teams in one form or another, yet we almost NEVER see Brady subjected to even 10% of what Darnald saw tonight. And even when it did, we saw Brady have an outlet to go to most of the time.
Remember that is to the great credit of Dante and Josh, and a cruel indictment of Gase. Not only didn't he make ANY adjustments for his OL, he never seemed to give Darnald any easy throws like slants or short crossers, or hooks. I don't think one game can screw up a good QB, but this one could come close.
Ted Johnson pointed out on the NBCSports postgame show, it was a close up of BB who had brought the entire D over to point something out when they were ahead 20 something to nothing. He said to the effect, " anyone have a question NOW about who is the defensive coordinator of the Patriots"?! And its true. Bill talks to Steve and Mayo, but Bill is more than just the "overseer" of defense. HE's the guy running the meetings. He's the guy dictating the strategy. In this case the Emperor HAS clothes.....and it's a HOODIE.
BTW- I really enjoy Johnson and Matt Cassel along with Holley and Breer on their post game show. They almost always give you a gem or two you won't get elsewhere.
