Browns, Ravens, Eagles.......that ain't right

Considering how easy the schedule is and that there are no long trips, , I'll forego outrage on this particular facet of the scheduling. Well, at least until the GDT.

Pats have their bye week prior to the Eagles game.

That balances it out! Cleveland doesn't scare me in no shape, form or fashion! Baltimore is 50/50 but if the Pats have the perfect game plan they can leave that stadium with a win! Don't even get me started with the Fleagles!

Reiss pointed out one thing I hadn't thought of myself.....that there was an advantage from a game planning standpoint. For example, the Pats staff already has all the tape broken down on the Browns as they did not play yesterday. And next week, ditto for Baltimore...as the game in Seattle yesterday was their final game prior to our match up. So, the video staff is probably working on the Baltimore tapes now...and should have everything ready right after the Jets game for the next two opponents.

Are there stats that show this matters?

Regards,
Chris

NFL Team Win Trends - After A Bye
According to this summary of team records after the bye (going back to 2003), not many teams see a big advantage to their bye week. In fact, only a little over half the teams have a winning record in the game following their bye.

Check out number 1 though. Watch out Philadelphia.:D:D:D:D:D

The downside to that is smart teams self scout during their bye so the film has less value.

Not many except for Philadelphia and Baltimore which just happen to be #2 and #3. Coincidence? Lets just say its more probable than not that the NFL was generally aware of this when they made the schedule.

And considering that Cleveland is 6-10 after a bye. That probably is a benefit considering their record over all. Indeed it is. 37% vs 29%.

those numbers include playoffs, that’s why pats have so many more games counting after a 1st round bye.
Change range to 2013 and pats are 10-2 and baltimore is 4-2

Per that site, since 2003 the Ravens and Eagles have winning percentages after a bye at about 20% above their overall winning percentage.

Since 2003. Aside from uniforms, owners and locations, there is nothing in common between these teams and their 16yr old versions of themselves.

I'm not reading anything into how good the Ravens and Eagles are after a bye based on that site.

Chris

Although Philly is #2.

Dont the Pats get a little rusty after a bye? Not sure of the stats but in the back of my mind I seem to remember we always anticipate they come out of the gate like a race horse but instead they start slow. Maybe it will be the same for the other teams.

A while back (too many seasons for it to matter any more), I did a tally of their record after the bye, and it ended up being good, but definitely worse than their overall record.

I think the bye is great for getting guys healthy, resetting for the home stretch, and getting a mental break, but it can also really f**k up momentum and the rhythm of your routine. It wouldn't surprise me if a number of guys on any given team need a quarter or two to let the muscle memory take over again.

I think the biggest benefit of a bye week in the playoffs is getting the automatic "win".

Worse? The page I linked to shows that since 2003, the Patriots are 24-4 after the bye and 3 of those losses came in the Super Bowl, meaning that they are 24-1 after the bye in the regular season since 2003. That sounds a bit better than their overall record.

BTW - their one regular season loss after the bye was in 2011 during week 8 when they lost to the 6-2 Steelers.
