Ex Denver Bronco Lineman goes nuts - Has fluid on brain

Maybe I’ll change my mind as time goes on, but I’m ultimately going to let my kid enjoy his life and let him live out whatever his passion may be. If that’s playing football, then so be it. What’s the point of life if you’re not doing that?

You can find reasons to not do anything in life. There will be risk at every corner.
If it's something he is really passionate about then it would be hard to tell him he cant do it but I would also do my best to persuade him into other sports.

Off topic a bit, but I notice that the headline says ex "NFL Player".

If it were an ex Patriot, you could bet the farm the headline would say so.

I definitely won’t push him into it. I’ll let him see what he picks up on. If he wants to play young then I’ll definitely encourage something more along the lines of flag football.

Surprised the headline isn't: "Ex player of Pats former rival goes crazy". Media will do anything to shine a dark light on the team.

Just found out we are having a boy. A few years ago I would have scoffed at the notion of not letting my future kid play football. Now I am not so sure.

congratulations.

If you're trying to say there's a ton of crazy people out there regardless of CTE, I agree.
what are you trying to say?..hmmmmmmmmmmm?

This is not to downplay CTE at all but I was talking to a neurologist friend recently who believes that although CTE can trigger negative outcomes in people with already compromised autonomic and immune systems, it is likely not the sole cause of problems like you see here with Bannan. He believes even if you eradicated one contributor like CTE, you'd still have so much dysfunction in certain athletes especially if they were taking peptides, NSAIDs, cortisone (an immune suppressor) etc., over their careers, not to mention the heavy metals and pathogenic bacteria we have in our systems from our industrial and natural environment. This largely explains it in his opinion because CTE is likely more common than we know, and that many people live with it, somewhat impaired bu not pathological or even depressed. The problem is that we ingest so many things toxic to us and we live in toxic environments, so that the combination of all of this wreaks havoc on our systems (limbic, adrenal, autonomic, immune).

I think that's a fair point. It's worth

Well, yeah, a lot of these guys are hooked on opioid painkillers and other stuff that they take as a matter of course to get through the season because the sport they play is murder on the human body and they're all freakishly sized people who probably shouldn't be that large or fast. And there's been a lot written about how the NFL and colleges push pills too. That shouldn't get lost in all this.

I think it's fair to say NFL players have a lot of issues, but the thing about CTE is that the extent of the risk football players face wasn't really known until recently, and nor was the fact that even a couple years of high school football without any major concussive events is enough to essentially duplicate the affects of Alzheimer's in some people.

"Passion" is often a fleeting thing for a person under 25, while the brain basically reforms itself every few months. Being firm about him valuing his brain cells over momentary happiness is a pretty important value to impart. As is helping him understand that he can find happiness and "passion" in many things, and often the best ones aren't the ones a young person is initially drawn to.

So can hydrocephaly be caused by trauma? I've only heard it in the context of a child in utero, where cerebrospinal fluid leads to oversized skulls. The whole Starchild thing.

I hardly know much about biology though, if anyone here is in the field, I'd love to be corrected!

I think the beating your brain takes as an NFL player is quite different than that of someone who plays through high school.

My parents did an unbelievable job in supporting whatever passion I had. That passion happened to be football, and they supported me and helped me as I played college ball, although they (my mom especially) did fear for my health. That was a fantastic experience that led to a lot of positive outcomes in my life and almost certainly was beneficial to me. My brain functions very well (I guess we'll have to see what happens in 30 years), and I'm almost positive that they would choose to let me play again.

Sure, that's a sample size of one and there are plenty of anecdotes out there from people who didn't have as positive of an experience. But I think there's still a very high chance that people who play football and don't play pro ball end up just fine.

Relative risk doubles every 2.6 years a person participates in football, per the most recent studies. Now the sample is still convenience, baseline risk is by nature very low so it takes several instances of compounded doubling to get to a meaningful risk factor, and it may very well be that this smoothing sublimates issues unique to the highest level of the game... but the evidence suggests that NFL players are only more likely to develop CTE simply because they play more football for longer. This is true of a lot of other public health issues - there's no safe amount of smoking, but smoking for one year is much less likely to lead to major harm than smoking twenty.

Ah yes, dropping candle wax on my ass cheeks as she's saying "You should be punished for not knowing that inflammed brain tissue, which can be brought in by head injury, results in poor absorption of cerebrospinal fluid. This shows that yes, in fact, hydrocephaly can be caused by trauma. Furthermore, hormonal imbalance, which could be brought on by PED usage, and stress both can be causes of brain inflammation. Really, what you're looking at, is situation made for these brain disorders."

After which, she spits in mouth or something.

Nobody should let their kids play this sport.

the long term damage is not worth the risk.

Ex-NFL DL Bannan arrested on attempted murder charge | Daily Mail Online

"Former NFL defensive lineman Justin Bannan faces attempted murder and assault charges after shooting a woman at his Colorado office and telling police the Russian mafia was after him."

"As he was being driven to the police station, Bannan told the officers he suffered from hydrocephalus, a disorder in which fluid builds up in brain cavities. He then told police he got rid of his cell phone because someone was using it to track him, adding that he had a 'significant story' to tell."

Just sad
Shouldn't we hear his story first before passing judgment?

"I agree, Josepha...if only there was a safer way..."
