Beginning To Understand How Goodell Issued Defaltegate Ruling

Did we all forget Suck for Luck?

Is he wrong?

Here's the list of #1 overall picks since 2001 (i.e. the start of the dynasty):

Michael Vick, David Carr, Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, Alex Smith, Mario Williams, JaMarcus Russell, Jake Long, Matthew Stafford, Sam Bradford, Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, Eric Fisher, Jadeveon Clowney, Jameis Winston, Jared Goff, Myles Garrett, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray

How many of those guys were worth throwing away your season for?

Luck I guess
Maybe Vick if he hadn't gotten into trouble
Long and Garrett were / have been excellent at their positions but not sure I'd go 0-16 intentionally to try to get them.
Jury is out on Murray
Everyone else on there is either super average or flat out bad.

Sure by starting in the Brady era I cut out Pink Head and Orlando Pace, and sure, maybe Tua will be better than any of those guys, but do you really think so?

It's just too hard to identify who's going to save your franchise. In retrospect it may very well have been worth tanking for Pat Mahomes, but he went 10th!
Is Stafford “super average” or bad?

I swore I'd never, ever click again on a thread with "Deflategate" in the title, but I usually respect what the OP has to say, so I broke my rule. I think it's become an interesting discussion.

There is no doubt, IMO, that what passes for a "Front Office" in Miami is "tanking" the season by selling the present for an unknown future.

However, I don't think that any HC who succeeded for years under BB would have it in his genes to "tank" a game, let alone a season; to paraphrase Bill Parcells, "you can't make dinner if you don't have any groceries" (or something like that).

As others have observed, players are looking out for themselves and their careers and, for some, this dumpster fire will become an opportunity to get some attention they would otherwise never have gotten...as a Talking Head said recently, "they're all scholarship players."

It was mentioned a couple of times.

The worst tank of them all was when Indy didn't go after the perfect season at 14-0 in 2009, and instead tanked the last two games. One of those losses allowed the 9-7 NYJ to get into the playoffs ahead of the 9-7 Steelers.

That almost paid off for Indy as they beat the 9-7 Ratbirds and then the Jete in the AFCC, only to lose in the SB on PEDton's game-sealing pick6 to NO. I heard it dubbed as the Come From Ahead win.

That's a matter of numbers, though, not some magical find. The notion that having the first pick overall isn't significant just doesn't hold up to the facts of the draft.

Can't a team take the amount of $$ that they would have spent on a top pick and use it for a proven FA? I think the Rams are in that situation now that they traded away their top picks for the next couple of years.

You can do any number of things as attempted alternatives. But the discussion here is about Goodell's deflategate ruling drafting #1 overall.

In theory yes but in practice a proven FA is going to be more expensive and under team control for a shorter period than a productive 'top' pick. The operative words being proven proven and productive
