Patriots re-signing Ben Watson

I don't think the pats are giving up on Izzo at all. His mistakes are correctable and they like this kid a lot.

BB said they didn't have room for him on the day he was released. They didn't - Jakob looked like he would be needed.

Personally, I'm glad that Pats AREN'T (EDIT) cavalier about dumping players. Probably makes the locker room even stronger. With Watson, the other thing was probably the salary condition at the time. Glad he's back. Good veteran presence - will help Izzo and LaCosse.

Watson fills the roster spot for J Johnson to IR, right?

All the good ones were not on the trading block. Would rather have Watson than OJ Howard. Watson has proved himself. Howard is a bust
Watson knows the playbook and has Brady's trust.

I think Izzo moves to fullback.

Bill said cutting Watson was because of no spots available on the roster, and everyone said it was about cap. A spot opens up and he's back.

It seems Bill told the truth.

When you want a player, and there's not already an open spot, you make a spot on the roster available. BB's comment was, strictly speaking, accurate, but it was still a meaningless response designed to avoid giving an actual reason.

There were four major positions needing upgrades or help: WR, TE, OL, FB.

WR: Harry, when he returns
TE: Watson
OL: Wynn, when he returns
FB: ??

I'm not saying the Pats are getting all-pros at these positions of need, but Harry, Watson, and Wynn *ALL* should be somewhat significant improvements at their respective positions.

I’m happy for him. He should be an upgrade in blocking and receiving.
At 38 years old? I think you are guys are expecting a lot of this fellow.

I think BB imagined he might have an injury or two in week 4 or 5 where the decision would have been easier to add Watson, when that did not occur, he just had to cut him for team building purposes, now the opportunity has presented itself for him.
I am not saying he wished for injury, but he just played the percentages and probability of the game.

How so? It won't take much to be an upgrade over what's been happening out there so far.

No, it's more a commentary about how little production they've gotten from the position so far.

Izzo is one of the very worst blockers in the league

how much shape can a guy who has not played football in how long at that age be? and what if he is worse, is it really that impossible of a scenario? He is almost 40 years old at a position that requires a bit of physicality especially in this offense, and he hasn't played in a while.

Watson, by all accounts, keeps himself in great shape. And you seem to be missing the point. The reason people are so hopeful about Watson is not because people expect Watson to be better than Gronk in his prime. It's because the current TEs have been hot garbage.

Of course if Watson had Gronk talent there would be a spot.

Mike Reiss: "I think BB felt like what they had was enough, and BW wasn't a decisive upgrade. Now, with injuries to Jakob Johnson and Matt LaCosse, there is at least one open spot."

Isn't that the same as saying there were no roster spots?

Obviously not. Come on.
