Jeff Howe: Pats in market for a WR and TE

the worst move of the patriots in recent years was releasing Allen the same offseason gronk was retiring while also not drafting or trading for or signing any high quality TEs

we should have just kept him on roster for stability and now we're paying the price having to deal with smucks at TE
You think they should have paid Dwayne Allen $7.4 million this season?!

I’m so surprised how we went from the best TE in the league and a solid blocking TE to like bunch of dumpster fire players this year.

Watson would have been so much better than these two trash bags.

I know it’s going to sound preachy, but we can safely assume that Belichick is well aware of the TE weakness on the team, as well as the talents of guys like Ben Watson and Dwayne Allen, both of which are currently unemployed and available for signing.

I think we’ll all agree that the position could use an upgrade, but it will be interesting to see how he goes about changing things.

Cameron Brate had a nice game for the Bucs BB it shouldn't take much to acquire him. I'm done with that fragile Jag LaCosse... Izzo sucks as a Blocker but at least he's healthy.

He couldn't beat out those two trash bags. That's why he's not on the team right now.

Yep, should have forced the Vikings GM at gunpoint to make the trade, apparently.
Yes, thank you for reminding folks that it does, indeed, take two parties to complete a trade. You can't just point at a guy you want, and stuff a 3rd round pick down the other GM's throat.

I think the reason the idea was rejected is because it isn't remotely realistic. NE isn't going to give up that capital on those players and Tampa has no interest in moving Godwin. The purpose of this thread is to discuss viable options.

How can you say what is viable or not? Who is viable? OBJ is viable? Diggs? You have no idea what TB will do, nor do i. They can rebuild because his QB is garbage and the best way to do it is collect picks. CG is really good but not a #1 WR and they can sell him like one because NE is desperate.

Anything can happen, but it would be surprising if they decided to part with Godwin, who thus far, is very much a WR1 for many/most teams. He broke out last year, and is setting the league on fire in 2019.

Given what we have seen from competitors and our defense I would disagree strongly that NE is desperate. At this point there is a better chance they will stand pat when it comes to WR. As others have said TE is a different story altogether but there getting Dwayne Allen would already be sufficient.

This team doesn't have to be a juggernaut on offense and defense. If the defense doesn't suffer injuries or uncharacteristically regress then we will only need a league average offense to have a good shot at another title.

That is not what desperation looks like to me.

Obviously Watson has some kind of lingering issue with injury and is not operating at speed or ability that BB needs out there....

Obviously, no he wasn’t.

Yep, and/or the financial considerations of saving 2m+ in cap space. I’m guessing that you’re right about the injury and that it’s a combination of the two.

Or he is really really old and has lost a step.

Yeah i agree with you he is setting the league on fire in 2019 and he is not the same player from the last 2 seasons, but let's see if this is the norm or not. I don't think we will land him but if OBJ and Diggs are in consideration why not him?

But again TB is in a tough spot. You keep him, Howard, Evans, Brate ... tanking is not an option. Cap space will never be very big .. If they stick with Jameis i think they will keep him.

Mike Evans is 26 and just signed a 5 year contract (16m per) ... Are they gonna pay 2 WR1 soon?

My vocabulary is not as robust as i would like. Maybe desperate is a strong word. But if JG injury is serious we really need another option. I agree with you that TE is a much bigger need, even LT.

LT /TE are 1.a/b and WR is a need if JG is down.

Yes, it will be tough keeping both Evans and Godwin in spring of 2021, but they’ll almost certainly have a young QB on a rookie contract by then. I doubt that Winston makes it much longer. Actually, I’m shocked that he’s made it there this long.

As far as Howard and Brate go, I wouldn’t concern myself with keeping either one of them unless the money was right. Neither one is worth a big contract.

I agree with you ... But if the rookie is worst than Jameis. I don't think Miami approach is the best one. You gotta have a good core of experienced guys to help your QB develop, but if you don't have the picks to get you guys you will always be mediocre (they project TB to select 13 as of now). It is a tough spot for them for sure. I expect JW to land a backup job like Bortles and Teddy B.

No doubt that another receiving option is needed, but I’m not expecting it to be anyone that exciting. Let the media write about all of the shiny possibilities, while Belichick trades for someone’s former 5th round WR who is buried on the depth chart.

I don’t think we’ll see the Pats in a desperate state at any position any time soon, but I understand what you’re saying in terms of them having to cough up a higher pick than other teams would have parted with.
