Idle thoughts - "this post is as ugly as the game" edition

Guys I have to be honest here. The opponents have gotten so bad that this game didn't have my entire interest. I mean I'm not sure what I have to offer at this point. Clearly we have the WORST 6-0 team in the history of the NFL.

Our QB completed 75% of his passes for over 330 yds, and he pretty much sucked. ANOTHER bad pick (though on 2nd look it MIGHT not be as bad as it looked) no TD passes. Enough misses that I was shocked at the completion percentage.

The running game still looks choppy as hell and we can't seem to make 4th downs.

The OL pass protection as just mediocre. The run blocking still isn't opening much in the way of wholes. Though Izzo is turning out to be a better pass catcher than blocker, and Lacosse can't stay on the field....and neither can Johnson.

All in all the offense made the Giant's defense look like the 2007 group, not the group that seemed so porus prior to this game.

The game was 21-14 weill into the 4th quarter and I wasn't in the least concern.

I'm hoping Ben hasn't left the area.

How did the offense suck so bad and still get over 75 snaps. They must have been doing SOMETHING right.

Gordon's injury looked horrible. Unless he's got some of Teddy Bruschi's Gumby blood in him, we could very well could see KNeal Harry before we see Josh.

Congrats to Gunner on his first 2 NFL catches. He's come a long way from this DB from Bemidji State.

Defense looked great, but sorry but who wouldn't. I love all the adulation and it IS deserved. You can only play who is out in front of you. But I can't WAIT for the Browns to finally get to town. Even the Jets with Darnald, Bell, and Anderson look like a breath of fresh air compared to everyone but the Steelers. At least as far as the opposing offenses are concerned, this is like a never ending preseason for the defense.

WHAT! Only one sack!

Another big play from Jamie Collins.

I wish our CB weren't so good just so I can prove to you guys just how good JWilliams is

Time for us to get a look at Damien Harris. Good or bad lets we what he has.

Donk! Bailey seemed like he had time to turn the laces, I think he forgot. But think about it. 6 inches to the right and we'd have nothing to complain about.

A couple of Giants thoughts.

I think Jones is going to be a good QB. Very accurate. Over half his completions wouldn't have made it if he hadn't been perfect. The bones are certainly there to grow from.

I REALLY liked that Mayo kid. The Giants have 4 or 5 solid guys on defense they can build a team around. I really wanted DLawrence this draft. Just missed him by 15 picks, ;)

Good, now I don't have to think about the Giants again for 4 more years.

And there it is. I really have nothing more to say. sue me

Thursday Night Football.

Ban is either keeping Bennett fresh for the stretch or looking to trade him.

........

Hate to admit it, but the previous 3 games have been somewhat boring... but a W is a W and there are no style points in the NFL.......

....if you don’t like Defense. ;)

Yeah, if you don't like defense. I get excited every time we kick the ball to the opposition.

As for Bennett, I think his decreased snap counts are due to a shoulder injury. He was on the report with it before it got crunched between Hightower and McCown last weekend. Three days of rest isn't much for an aggravated injury to heal, but 10 days off will help. It would probably be best to shelve him for a few weeks. It's hard to strengthen a joint that keeps getting inflamed from reinjury. So much of his game is based on hand work, and he's playing with one and a half arms, and he could be a force down the stretch if he could heal-up.

Patriot DBs are playing as confident as I have ever seen. The days of giving a buffer to WRs is long gone. In fact it appears they want an INT on most every pass.
They did play zone on a few snaps and the G men had minor success.

Prior to Brady’s 2nd QB sneak TD, the O huddled with the ball on the 4 and Brady looked like he either was giving his offense a pep talk or delivering the longest play call in Pats history. Then he sneaks the ball to the 1 yd line.
Can’t imagine Josh called a sneak from the 4.
Brady making some kind of statement with regards to his faith in the offense?
Worth 30-40 pages of discussion?

Young Gunner sure can cut on a dime!
Jacobi’s hands are legit.
Izzo blocking.....yikes
Seeing these 3 baby faces in the NE huddle at least makes me perk up and pay better attention during this 12 game preseason stretch (4+8).

I don’t now how anyone could not fault Brady for his 1st pick. Edelman bisected the deep defenders and Brady was way off, 5 yds right.
It happens

O line play continues to be the heart of NE’s offensive woes.
I will be curious to see what BB does this offseason/ draft to address O Line deficiencies. Can the team count on Andrew’s returning and Wynn taking the field consistently? Better depth at a minimum.

On the surface, NE’s pass rush was stymied for the first time this year though it seemed like they rushed only 3 in this game more times than any other. Lack of sacks but accelerated INT rate works for me.
Have I mentioned how I own the NE D on all my fantasy squads?

How spoiled are we? Our team crushes all pretenders and we nitpick the flaws. Most fan bases would be pounding their chests. I’m certainly spoiled and I demand flawless execution at all times. I had a moment of depression when the Giants earned their first 1st down

Lastly, what is it with Nugent aiming for the left post on every kick. It is downright bizarre.
Every kick is a white knuckler.
Can’t kick off
Won’t let him kick past the 30
Aims for left post
Hope he signed a flexible lease

This Weekend...Go Texans!

PFK glad to see your acknowledgement that this game did not "hold your interest", this has pretty much been the same for me in the past three weeks..

The war of attrition (aka NFL season) on the O side of the ball is obvious.. and takes away from the game itself..

Then there is the O line, it is not because of one lineman sucking, there were a couple of weird snaps by Karras as well.. now we see the value of David Andrews...

Virtually no run game (Michel wound up with 80+) but how many times were they rebuffed on short yardage plays??

No passing game (Brady wound up with 300+) but too many sacks, the overall lack of talent is obvious there..

Maybe the 10 days off will reap some benefit as these guys need a rest.. next up the Jets, then the schedule gets a lot tougher.. Browns, Ravens then a bye week.. which will bring us into mid November.

Hate to admit it, but the previous 3 games have been somewhat boring... but a W is a W and there are no style points in the NFL...
Yegads! I don't understand being bored with a game. You follow the team, you cheer and jeer, share in the disappoint and joy, but bored? I just don't get it. The epitome of a spoiled fan of the team with an unbelievable coach and quarterback. Sure I get upset when something inexplicable happens, and yell when something good happens, bored? Never. People cry about injuries and loss of players. I enjoy seeing who steps up and regardless of the hand wringing, BB usually figures it out. Think back to last year and there were tears of woe then also and they won the SB. People criticize BB as a poor drafter, but he is the ultimate team builder. The chips are down on offense right now but BB is the epitome of when the going gets tough the tough get going.

I would have hit agree on this post but I couldn't bring myself to support the Texans even though I suppose I should root against the Chiefs. Good post. We have a tackle and guard/center on standby (Cajuste/Froholdt) don't know if they are the answer. But I can see another interior lineman/tackle/tight end in the first 3 rounds next year. We still have a PK on practice squad, maybe he will be activated but he had some bad misses with the Chargers last year. There are no good answers out there. I wonder if it's possible for Bailey to take on PK duties also.

I don't care how ugly our Wins look lol. We are winning and that's all that matters. The stretch run in Dec/Jan is the important part. BB will adjust this team. Lookout for some trades and some key situational players to be signed in the next few weeks.

RE: the Bennett discussion, one thing I've noticed is that he does not seem particularly comfortable/good when stunting or running 'games'. He seems much more productive and comfortable as a pure 1:1, upfield pass-rusher.

I think his usage (or lack thereof) could be related to that. Given how often the Patriots stunt and run 'games', especially in passing-situations, he might not be a good scheme fit at this point. Maybe he improves as the season goes on.

We shall see.

So...Adrian Clayborn?

The Patriots broke Ken. Someone call the paramedics!

The offense is a concern. Last year we could play smash mouth football with a healthy OL and TEs who could block.

If we are forced to throw it with the receivers we have, it will be an issue against stronger opponents. You need guys who can consistently get open on man coverage to do that.

I try not to be a spoiled rotten fan. Any win is a good win. But I hated not completing the two 4th downs, hated he INT, hated the missed FG. Fix those and it's 55-7 or something. That's crazy. I will just enjoy it and hope that the O looks like the O sometime soon and that nothing changes with the D.

I look forward to the other team getting the ball now. That's a fun feeling!

Thoughts on the lack of Michael Bennett?
None whatsoever. Bennett's lack of snaps is nothing more than common sense. The guy is 34, has had LOTS of wear and tear over the years. I think I read where he was in on 80% of the snaps in Seattle and 70% with the Eagles.

Every time I make a point of checking him out, Bennett is doing something good. Last night I saw him come close at least twice on good moves as a DE. Bennett is fine. It's game six of what we all hope will be a 19 game season. Why does he need to be a featured player NOW?

@patfanken

Doing some quick math (please allow small margin of error), the 2007 team’s margin of victory was 19 ppg and the 2019 team is at 24 ppg. Not comparing the two beyond that because the major difference in strength of opponents, but quite a stretch to say this is the worst 6-0 team ever when they may be first all-time in point differential through six games. I couldn’t tell if you were serious about that point.

It’s strange because the 2007 team and 2019 are almost opposites. The 2007 team was like a race car out of the gate, just annihilating teams early on in games and building up ridiculous leads by halftime. In contrast, the 2019 squad tends to get much better as the game goes on and the defense continues to dominate the field position and turnover battle.
You took the comment too literally. I was being "ironical". At 1am after a game like that nothing I said should be taken that seriously. ;)

Wrong. First 3 games HT scores: 20-0, 13-0, 20-0...and no Brady ints... doesn't sound like slow out of the gate to me. What's different from then to the last 3 games? AB came and went and Brady started pouting...

....if you don’t like Defense. ;)

On the Pats side is their problem facing a good defense or just a crappy offense??..

Crappy offense due to several factors, injuries, lack of talent and crappy game plans that get tossed aside when there are not enough bodies..

On the strip sack, I was very surprised that they left Izzo on his own for that play. Newhouse turned and never looked to see if Izzo needed help. He seemed to just double up the man that Thuney had controlled already.. Not sure if this was by design or a screwup by Newhouse.

I thought Shaq Mason had his best game last night. I didn't see him get bull-rushed into Brady like he had been previously. Cannon seemed to play better for the most part as well but still not where we'd expect him to be.

I think that Meyers and Olszeski really impressed with how they stepped up. I think that they learned the lesson that BB taught to Stidham. That you always have to be ready..

The offense reminded me of Brown, Patten, and Johnson from 2001..
