I was rewatching the Redskins game, and in the 2nd quarter as the Pats were at a 2nd and 10 and approaching the Red Zone, Josh McD dialed up a play. I think if I describe it to you, you'll recognize it. It was a play action fake end around screen. Fake to the RB up the gut, fake again to an end around, and then a screen pass back to the first RB. There was pressure on Brady so it fell incomplete, and even if it was completed a defender was right there to stop the RB for a loss. Being an inconsequential incomplete pass, it's not clipped, but I'll pull an example of the same play from a different game.

Here's a play in the first drive in the 2011 playoff loss to the Jets.

Look familiar?

Also, here's the first Pats offensive play on the first play of Super Bowl XLII

Notice how there are two Giants DL on Brady's lap before he's ready to throw.

There are a few other lower profile failures as well.

I'm not going to say this play NEVER works. I think they ran it vs. Tennessee for 10+ yards a year or two back. I just think the risk/reward of this play is not in your favor as it's the slowest developing play and requires the QB to take his eyes off the pass rush and coverage. If I had to choose one play to retire from the Pats' playbook forever, this would be the one. Give me a dozen flea flickers before we see this one again.

Yeah they DON'T have the OL Personnel or time for that play to develop.

I completely agree...that play absolutely sucks...it didn't work two weeks ago in Barfalo either.

The Only way that formation would ever work is by throwing Back to the WR who performed the sweep motion pre-snap...Brady looks one way, towards the screen motion, but then throws the other way, towards - in the case of the Jets PO loss - #19 Brandon Tate, who was just about to become Very Wide Open...I wonder if Brady would've reconsidered his decision if Welker had been the man in motion...we all know the reason he wasn't there, sadly...

they should retire all the plays that don't work but keep as many of the ones that do work.

I have begged for this play to be thrown away for years. We never change it up and run it to the left or anything. It would probably work with a mobile qb. We even used this play against the Rams if I remember correctly and it was sniffed out immediately, but a flag was thrown on the db for a high hit on the rb. This play and some of the designs on our run game are reasons I question McDaniels' ability as an offensive coordinator. Brady is the goat and has 20 years experience so I expect him to be successful with whoever is calling plays but I have wondered what our offense would look like if McDaniels left again. Nothing but good things for our defense since since Matt P left. Things to ponder.

They ran it for a decent gain tonight
