In related news the Bills just released Conor McDermott. Another returnee?!

could be

He could be better than Cunningham as an inactive backup.

He certainly should be considered for the Practice Squad.

I'd rather we signed Renee Richards...

Why did he play defense at all the last time he was here? But he did, alas.

Why did Slater and Edelman take defensive snaps in 2011? Are you worried that they might do so again this year because of it?

Atleast JE has some success playing db in the nfl.

Its on YouTube I'm sure. He dove at JuJu on the sideline and forced a NEP defender to jump around him thus also missing the tackle.
Ok, had to go find it. Start watching Richards at 5:10.

Right. Their punt coverage unit has been great and the punt return unit has been fine. However, when it’s not a touchback, the Patriots have allowed 30 yards per kickoff return which is in the bottom quarter of the league.

Richards can help that, because hes fast...

Keystone cops on that play.

After watching that again, not sure that's all on Richards. He still was slow to react and slipped but DMC took a horrific angle.

I’m ready to call you mr non sequitur.

SB LII in early Feb 2018, remember? He lacks the athleticism, unlike Troy Brown, who successfully helped on defense years earlier, to make plays on defense on a consistent basis.

I first saw this when Richards played in the Rose Bowl where the Michigan State RB, who played in the NFL, easily beat him to the edge for a TD. I was criticized for being critical of the insanely stupid second-rounder when he was, at best, a six- or seventh-rounder on most teams’ draft boards. Check in at 0.15 seconds. Richards had no chance then—like he has no chance now.

Anyone who watched him in college was critical of that pick. And rightfully so. But we just had to take this absolute stud in the second round, though. God forbid another team scooped him up.

Terrible DBs in the 2nd round is a tradition like no other...

Then you would only show you don't have a firm grasp on what a non sequitor is. :)

My comment is more aptly described a reductio ad absurdum. Your reasoning applies to Slater and Edelman in 2011 just as well as it does Rochards in 2017. And you find them absurd for the same reason why Richards isn't likely to be more than a special teams player in 2019.

Videos that illustrate Richards' flaws as a scrimmage player do nothing to make your fears more likely to materialize, they only explain why your fears persist.

Um, no. You brought up something unrelated to the discussion—something from 2011, which no one is concerned about—and, in your own mind, thought you were making an argument.

But you were merely engaging in the common fallacious reasoning called a non sequitur, Latin for “it does not follow.”

That’s why I linked to what happened with Richards in the SB in 2018.

And videos linking to his biggest game as both a collegiate player, the Rose Bowl, and the world championship hardly can be called scrimmages.

I had the same thought, not as bad as I remember (but he had a big hand in setting up 60 yards).

My memory was also of the pass going to the tight end for some reason (maybe getting confused with the incomplete pass at the goal play).

I'm curious, what makes you think it doesn't follow? Isn't your argument something along the lines of, "he took snaps at that position before, so he's liable to be trotted out there again whether the team needs him to or not?"

If that isn't your argument, then could you please state it more clearly?

Slater and Edelman are both All Pros and elite athletes. Richards is welcome to marry my daughter, and I would vote for him to be President.

But an elite athlete on this rarefied stage he is not. Oranges to apples

I'll grant you Edelman, but Slater's primary grouping - special teams - is the same as Richards'. Is your contention that, since Richards isn't as good at specials as Slater, this means Bill must have a scrimmage role for Richards, whether the defense needs it or not?
