one of those two missed kicks was blocked...

and the second part... so thats a bad thing?

It was blocked because it was a bad kick. Go back and watch it. He didn’t get under it enough and it was a low liner, leading to it being tipped at the line. A better kick probably gets over Shane Burton’s hand.

i was at the game... watched it live... the kick was fine, the mountain they had in the line up stood large and got a finger on the kick. its disingenuous to put it out there as a missed kick with no mention that it was blocked.

In a sense, I agree, but that largely comes down to opportunity. Gost made his only playoff game winning attempt - to beat SD in 2006. It wasn't particularly difficult and didn't have the burdens or prestige of Adam's kicks, but that isn't really Gost's fault. Nor are his playoff misses as much of a detriment when you consider that Adam had similar misfires as well.

So Adam absolutely has more cred, but it would be a much stronger argument if Gost had doinked a few high profile attempts.
I’m not blaming Gostkowski here for not having to be in many high leverage situations. And the statistics may suggest Gostkowski is “more clutch” but when all is said and done AV will be the one recognized in the Hall of Fame for his incredibly clutch kicks in the biggest spots.

Meanwhile Stephen Gostkowski will be remembered as a damn good kicker with a long successful career. Take that for what you will, if one thinks it’s a slight against Gostkowski so be it.

It's not exactly his fault that during AV's day, Brady was Field General Brady, while during Gostkowski's career, he was mostly Tom F—king Brady.

Did I say it was his fault? Vinatieri was put in some spots where he had to make some of the biggest kicks in NFL history and he succeeded and that elevates him to a status above some other great kickers (more efficient even) who didn’t have the opportunity to prove their “clutch gene” in a playoff/championship game winner situation.

This season is starting to get that 2015 feel. Lots of injuries plaguing us.

Talk to me when Edelman/White or someone like Gilmore goes on IR then we can start bringing up 2015. It’s bad on the OL front but we are close enough to full strength in most other areas. Kicker excluded obviously.

we should rename this forum to WEEIforums.com. No PatsFans posting here.

Hip surgery sounds serious. Any details on the exact injury or if this is going to linger long after?

Ignoring his rookie season, from 2007 to 2015 (before XP rule change), Ghost was kicking at:
  • 88.3% FG in the regular season
  • 88.9% FG in the Playoffs
That's 9 years of consistency, 9 years of being one of the three best kickers in the NFL, with only Justin Tucker being consistently better. In comparison, comparing Adam Vinatieri's 10-year career with the Patriots:
  • 81.9% FG in the regular season
  • 76.5% FG in the Playoffs
Some Patriots fans hold Vinatieri in higher regards simply because he hit game-winners during the Playoffs, but the truth is that Ghost has been the better kicker for the Patriots. We can also look at Ghost's stats since the XP rule change in 2016, the year when Ghost started declining.
  • 87.5% FG in the regular season, 93.8% XP
  • 83.3% FG in the Playoffs, 90.3% XP
These are still pretty good numbers for a "washed-up" kicker.

OK - - NOW it all makes sense!!!!!

Jordan Richards is our new placekicker.

.
Around here anyway, JR would be more of a kick-ee than a kick-er.

Was Mike Vanderjagt better than Vinatieri with a better fg% ? No he wasn't

Was Peyton Manning better than Brady despite some volume passing stats ? No he wasn't

Ghost doesn't get calls for huge 45 yard fg's and has been shaky in past playoff games.

.

It's been a tough year for Brady, Belichick, and the Patriots. First the Pats win the Super Bowl, then lose Gronkowski in the offseason, and now lose Gostkowski? It's a rough time to be someone with the surname Kowski right about now.

They better leave Bruce Gradkowski alone, I reckon that much.

lure Janikowski out of retirement PLEASE
Janikowski was toast his last two years. He hung on for the paychecks. (Kinda like Vinatieri is doing now)

Interesting either way if it's down to Forbath and Nugent (both kickers who have some skill, but also have some pretty bad yips from time to time).

If it's Forbath, he'd be going against his old team in his old stadium on Sunday.

If it's Nugent. he'd be going against his old team in his old stadium in just a couple of weeks, right after the mini-bye.

Either way, I hope Bailey has his holding sorted.
