Cleveland Browns RB Nick Chubb

What a stupid f**king premise for a thread

OK he has 171yds in four games that's not impressive and we are taking about the 2019 Michel here. I am not going to use the homer angle to defend him he's not been very good.

The difference between Chubb and Michel is nowhere near the gap between Anquan Boldin and Bethel Johnson. And yet, we may have not won the 2003 Super Bowl without Temple Bethel. I'll take the players who help us win SB's over the objectively "better" players any day of the week.

Before yesterday I was second guessing Michel... but yesterday Michel had very little room to run and the line was abysmal and kept getting pushed back #85, Izzo? May be the worst blocking TE I've seen on the Pats in a long time

Chubb looks like a beast who can take it to the house.

Sony is probably hurt again.

Based on their college film, Sony, easily; he looked like Kamara 2.0.

He's been a totally different player since coming to the NFL, regardless of OL struggles (two separate issues), and in spite of his postseason success last year. Chubb has looked like the better NFL player.

Sony still shows good vision and power at times, but nowhere near the shifty, explosive playmaking ability he showed at UGA; he's much more upright and seems stiff. It's not really debatable that he's been a totally different player at the NFL level when compared to UGA -- just go watch some highlights of Georgia compared to Pats side-by-side and you'll see the difference.

That's not to say he hasn't been productive, he's been a productive contributor, but a totally different style of play.

I really wonder if it's a mental/coaching thing related to ball security, and he's so focused on protecting the ball that he isn't playing loose and aggressively. In the preseason game against Carolina this season he looked like his explosive self at UGA, and I remember posters being blown away and excited by how he looked. But since the start of the regular season that explosiveness hasn't been there.

I don't think it's injuries or a lack of physical ability -- I think it's mental/coaching.

Regarding his straight, downhill style, I think it’s a coaching thing for sure.

Yeah, seems so, which perplexes me.

It appears they drafted Michel and turned him into a one-dimensional power back, and little else.

He's clearly put on a ton of weight which I assume is by request of the team -- tree trunks for legs, massive arms. He's heavier and it shows, he lacks his speed and explosiveness from college, and I would argue that whatever power/strength he has gained hasn't made him a better overall player.

Why they'd draft a guy with that kind of talent and explosiveness in the 1st round, and coach and physically condition him to be a 2-down power back doesn't really make sense to me.

His body type and playing style should be much more like Burkhead, IMO, who is leaner and more explosive.

Man how I wish we could be more like the Browns. Now that is a team that can draft,

Ryan Izzo is horrible and should be cut shortly.

Personally I like bigger RBs and for that reason I was hopeful the NEP would have selected Chubb.

I have been very happy with Sony.

Whatever.

I couldn’t help but notice how explosive and talented Nick Chubb looked yesterday. Looks like a future all pro. Those of you who watched a lot of Georgia Football, who was better in college Chubb or Sony and who was viewed as the better NFL prospect?

Do you think we made another Jermaine Cunningham-Carlos Dunlap mistake?

I like Michel, but yeah Chubb is definitely the better player. Looks like the Pats picked the 'wrong' Georgia RB, but the gap looks a bit bigger right now than it really is because we're having this conversation directly after Chubb's best game and a series of rough games for Michel. At UGA it looked pretty close between them - I still thought Chubb was the better player but taking Michel over him was totally defensible at the time. So I wonder how much of it is other factors at work. A lot of Michel's struggles are more reflective of the loss of Gronk, Develin, Andrews and Wynn than anything else anyway, and Chubb wasn't lighting the world on fire for the first three weeks either.

chubb looks much better...

Sony lost a little explosiveness due to his knee injury, as also noted by at least 2 other Pats articles I’ve read in he past year. I’m more curious about being involved in the passing game. Supposedly Sony was more well rounded than Chubb.

He looked plenty explosive in the preseason when there was some running room to be found.

He seemed much more decisive and explosive. Now he hesitates, to find holes that also are not there. If the OL starts to give him some openings, that would be great.

I graded Chubb a lil higher but Sony was perfect here. Both would've been vg here. Chubb can actually catch the ball as well.

Rn Sony simply isn't the same player. Injuries, weight? Who knows. Anyone who watched him even a few games in college can see that.

That said the troubles in the run game solely arent on him in any way. LOS was getting reset constantly yest.

Pats should just pick the opposite of who they like

I dont think so but after scouting both last year I said this I would have taken Nick Chubb instead he looked like the better runner in College. Really hope Sony get his act together because even the Lions Kerryon Johnson looks like a way better player. Sony you are a First Round Running Back run like one.
Where exactly would you like him to run? Every time they call a wide zone play, there is no zone for him to run through. Every time they call a power play, he is immediately met behind or or at the LoS. If he was getting great push on the Oline and producing similar results, I would worry. Right now, my concern is on the health and continuity of the Oline.

Chubb was more of the workhorse and Sony was more of the third down/change of pace back. Chubb got his knee totally destroyed a few years back. He has all the talent in the world, I bet he is just now finally fully recovered.

I live in GA. Moot point to compare them. Why? Our Offensive line is awful...bottom 5 right now.

Week 8 will be funny if/when Chubb dominates and Sony does nothing head to head.

Based on what they were in college, Sony was a slightly better prospect according to the draftniks. He was probably the better choice for the Pats because he also projected better as a receiver, an area he excelled at in college. Myself, I would have selected Chubb simply because he was the bigger guy, and at the time I thought that was an area of need. A guy better suited make all the 3rd and short runs.

Revisionist fans will call it a mistake, but even though Sony wasn't MY choice (no RB would be) he had a very good rookie season and hasn't gotten off so far this year for a LOT of reasons. Bottom line we have NO reason to regret that pick so far. It isn't Sony's fault that Josh won't involve him in the passing attack other than the fact he has 2 other backs that are GREAT at it.
