The Jonathan Jones hit wasn't dirty

What really was irritating was the announcers calling the qb defenseless. He is fighting for a first and should have been declared a runner, and should be treated as such.

Clearly a helmet to helmet hit. Jones could have led with his shoulder. Allen initiated the contact which is why Jones was not ejected, but clear helmet to helmet contact against a QB - a rusher at the time of the hit, or not - will always be a penalty on the defender.

The refs got this one right.

Ridiculous

Any contact with the QBs head is forbidden. Shoulder to QB head contact is a penalty as well. What planet are you from to not be aware that the NFL is cracking down on head injuries for all players, but especially for QBs?

Jones should have avoided his helmet in the area of Allens head at all cost. Do not put yourself in that situation.

There should be at least some responsibility on the QB too.

I am all for protecting the QB in the pocket to a ridiculous degree, but if the QB intentionally puts himself in the position as a runner that the defensive player has little choice, but to make the play, it should be on the QB.

The QB is the sacred cow.

Cant touch him.

And Dan Pouts called it a “vicious” hit. The image and the reality often don’t jive.

The initial Announcers shape so much of the convo , and these today were stupid

“Defenseless runner” was mentioned, that is not even something that exists, a runner is not defenseless, a receiver and passer can be defenseless but the moment you try to run you accept the risk of getting hit

Also you can hit helmet to helmet on a runner so long as you don’t target/spear/launch...arguably shouldn’t have even been a personal foul

So the rest doesn’t even matter, but the hit had to be high to stop the momentum and stop him 1-2 yards short of getting the first down

Fouts is such an idiot. He was saying it was not necessary for Jones to hit him because Allen was getting wrapped up. Jones was trying to stop him from getting a 1st down which he did with that hit.

Fouts is THE worst commentator CBS has.

Not to mention that Josh Allen has 8 inches on Jones. Who was lowering who's head in this case?

This is actually the first time I've viewed "the hit", because I missed it yesterday. The helmet to helmet rule should have definitely been enforced here. This hit warrants an ejection. Josh Allen should have been ejected from the game.

6 inches taller and 55 lbs heavier still moving forward as a runner. It’s like a Hummer slamming into a Honda Civic.

It is amazing CBS considers them the #2 team. (Eagle is fine, but Fouts is so horrible).

Why the hell isn’t Harlan/Gannon not the #2 team??

I agree with Tom E. Curran:

And yep, if Brady was dumb enough to lunge forward head first to get a yard, you bet he would have been teed up on as well.

At first blush, it looked like a dirty (but within the rules) shot. But watching the replay, there was nothing dirty about that. Allen wasn’t going down and lowered his own helmet, which caused the contact and made what was already going to be a hard hit an even harder impact. This situation is really spelling out how many people, and this includes the referees, don’t know the rules. And McSpermott should be ashamed of himself for what he said after the game yesterday.

The play was officiated correctly.

Helmet to helmet hit. Unintentional which is why there was no disqualification. Obvious because he doesnt even lead with his and turned his shoulder. But a strike to the head nonetheless. Unfortunate but thats how it is officiated in today’s game.

I agree with the helmet to helmet hit but why was the call not on Allen? He lowered his head and initiated the contact with Jones. Screenshot_20190930-095155_YouTube.jpg

This play is why it is becoming impossible to officiate the game. So many things to decide in REAL time, that will dissected frame by frame after the fact. I don't blame the ref who made the call. It's one of the league's stupid "points of emphasis" that they issue from on high every week.

It will be interesting to see if the fine Jones. I think they will if only to justify the call. But I have to ask the question, "would a flag be thrown if the runner had been Frank Gore in that situation rather than Josh Allen????? It's a question that the media should be asking the league early and often.

This is the first time I got to see this. How on Earth does the crown of Josh Allen's helmet hitting the side of JJ's equal a dirty hit on JJ?

When you hear about the play from non-Patriots fans and certain media members, it sounds like a replay of Derek Barnett's cheap shot on the Green Bay running back from Thursday night: Harmon had Josh Allen wrapped up, his forward progress was stopped and then, for no reason, Jonathan Jones runs in, launches and spears Allen in the head with the crown of his helmet.

In reality, Harmon was still in the process of wrapping up Allen, Allen was still moving forward, Jones stepped in front to stop him and, like you said, the crown of Allen's helmet hits the side of Jones'.

Good call all around. Obvious penalty, good call to not eject.

No. It wasn't officiated correctly as Allen was the one who initiated the contact by lowering his head. Allen is 6'5. Jones is 5'9. Only 2 ways for Jones helmet to hit Allen's. Jones launches himself or Allen lowers his head. It was the latter as Allen was trying to eek out yardage. Who initiates the contact MATTERS.

Except he was a runner on this play. In fact if anyone should have been flagged on that play it should have been Allen for lowering his head. But that doesn't fit your toll take does it?
