I don't question the INTENT of the rules. Perhaps its because I come from and era where I played 4 yrs of HS, 4 yrs of college and 2 yrs beyond and LITERALLY led with my head (front/facemask) on every single play on defense AND offense. Put your face in your opponent's chest and then slide to your shoulder. It's how you were supposed to tackle and how you were supposed to block. People I play poker tell me that what I have just said explains a lot about my decisions.But I think it’s unfortunate to call rules in the interest of safety (which are desperately needed IMO) “****ification” of the game.
In this case I don't know what Jones could have done to keep him from a first down. He was a 180 DB trying to stop a 240lb RUNNER who was lowering HIS head to get that first down. Should have have simply stepped aside?
