Should Pats try to extend Dorsett now?

I do not know if we can extend him right now because of the cap.
He is a good kid. I do not understand why some members here want him gone like he is trash.
I want very badly to keep him. A lot of our receiving team is short term assets as BB has ramped us up to take advantage of the last couple years of Brady. Dorsett on the other hand is just entering his prime right now and has years of life in his legs.

We're going to need people for Stidham to throw to. I'd like one of those people to be Dorsett.

We seem to be talking past each other.

You seem to saying that Dorsett doesn't deserve a new contract for 2019 because he his production will decrease as the years goes on. OK, that presumes that AB is still around, but that's fine. You measure Dorsett by how he compares to AB, Gordon and Edelman.

I will stipulate that Dorsett will play less if all three in front of him play, and that he is nowhere near as good as they are. I believe that this is irrelevant to an 2020-2022 extension.

Unless we extend both Brown and Gordon with 2020 contracts (extremely unlikely), I believe that Dorsett would be an important key to our offense in 2020-2022.
I never said he doesn't deserve a new contract. I also never talked about his production beyond this season. And I do believe AB is a one-year rental, so he's not part of any long-term convo. All I was ever saying is I don't see an in-season contract extension happening (though I obviously could be wrong). Brady loves him and he's had two really good games to start, albeit against a D that hasn't yet gelled and another team that may be one of the worst we've seen when it's all said and done. And, as @Deus Irae pointed out, 4WR sets could be the only scenario where he stays seeing considerable playing time if the guys ahead of him stay on the field. But that's it.

Dorsett is fast becoming a fan favorite, and I'll say again I really like him too, but let's not send him to Canton yet or overestimate him. He has great hands and is always where he should be, which are great tools for our offense, but he is still a mostly limited receiver who is benefiting a lot from playing with the GOAT. But hey, he's a lot better than Reche Caldwell.:D

We should sign Emmanuel Sanders to replace AB in the off season.

You keep on focusing on 2019 production. I just don't think that it matters. We need a wide receiver for 2020. We have one who plays well with Brady and knows our system very, very well. If we can, I think that he should signed for the future.

I’d love to keep him, it all depends if AB stays past this season.

We can keep Edelman/Gordon/Harry/Dorsett and we good with Burkhead and White catching the rock.

I don't see AB staying. We would all be thrilled to extend Gordon.

He is on a one-year, $2.6M deal. This was clearly meant to be a “prove it” deal for Dorsett.

Fair to say that the more he continues to emerge, the less likely the Patriots are to re-sign him if he hits free agency.

What’s an extension that benefits both sides here? Maybe 3 years, $18M?
3 years, 13 million maybe? I don't think he gets more than that.

I think you have to have a guy like Dorsett for as long as you have Brown. A cost controlled guy you can plug in to replace Brown at a moment's notice so you're free to divest yourself of Brown should he turn toxic or the rape allegations prove true.
Plus, there's zero chance they have Brown past this year.

Last year he had 12 catches in the first 2 games then 15 in the next 13.
This year he has 7 in the first 2 games.

He is a nice piece to have around for cheap but at 6 mill a year it sounds like too much.
There was a large chunk where they weren't playing/using him because they were busy forcing the ball to Gordon. He also caught the only two TD passes in the postseason.

Are you saying he should have played instead of Gordon?

$6M per year is is just me throwing out a rough estimate.

What do you think a good (realistic) extension amount would be on a basic per-year amount, not getting into guarantees yet?

I don’t think you extend him now.

And it's fine that you feel that way. I just don't think we'll see any extension happening before the end of the season for him. That was my point from the very beginning.

What impresses me is his precise route running and the confidence that #12 has in him.. so my vote is to extend him, if the Pats want him they can do the numbers that will work for both parties..

It's funny how 3 weeks ago a select few thought PD was on the bubble.

Lock him up
AB will be long gone by next year if not sooner.
JE is on borrowed time (refer to Wes Welker’s rapid decline)
Any future Gordon contract will be incredibly team friendly
And 2 rookie contracts

Dorsett could have a long and productive future on this team with his role expanding yearly

The purpose of extending him now is to avoid a price war at the end of the season.
