Red Sox fire Dave Dombrowski

Good riddance...the same reasons his Tigers teams couldn't get over the hump reared their ugly heads here this season...he had to go now because he would only continue to gut the farm system and field inferior bullpens...But Eddie Romero?...That Eddie Romero?
food for thought. if you are an established GM. Would you want to work for the redsox knowing they just fired DD after winning three division titles in a row and a world series championship less than a year ago?

they would have to offer him a sh!t ton to come back. i would take him. But he has made some awful free agent signings.
The Boy Blunder of Brookline probably isn't returning unless he's given an ownership stake AND Larry Lucchino is no longer involved in any shape, manner or form with the organization.

I'm not surprised. DD is a guy you bring in for a very specific reason. You bring in Dombrowski to do exactly what he did with both us successfully, and Detroit less successfully. Because a collapse is imminent regardless and it's time to think short term.

You bring in DD to pool your resources for a few critical peak years, or to mortgage the future, rob Peter to pay Paul, and give you a few extra years to contend before the collapse. In our case, it was the latter. And it worked. We won a World Series we probably don't win without him.

However, it's now obvious that the collapse can't be delayed anymore and that was always going to be the moment when Dombrowski was done in Boston. DD has done his job, got you that one extra title, but he's no longer the right man to do what needs to be done for the future -- break up the team, accept a couple bad years, and trade current assets, of which we have a lot, for future assets to rebuild the roster around. Especially our rotation.

It's time to completely reorganize the franchise. Keep what you can, trade what you have to, and get the pipeline kick-started by any means necessary. And accept that that means it'll be maybe 3-4 years before we're a top competitor again.

BTW this means we'll probably have young GMs for a little while. No competent veteran GM will take this job because they're going to have to make some very unpopular decisions to put the team back on the right track. I'm talking "trade Betts and Bogaerts and possibly E-Rod to restock the farm" kind of decisions. Restoring the farm to functionality is priority 1 if we ever want to get back to the top

lol they aren't trading bogarts. He's 26, and they just signed him to a new team friendly deal. betts yes. bogarts? No way.

Keep the young players. Get rid of the old players on huge contracts. Rebuild the farm system. This will take a couple years to reload....

.

You won't get the value you need to kick start the farm by trading away our problem contracts. We're going to need to move some good assets with the bad in order to position for a new run at championships. if we do half measures and live in denial, our trip to the basement will be extended, perhaps indefinitely.

We need to move some assets at the peak of their value if we want the kind of returns that will really allow us to pivot and speed up the rebuild.

Alternatively we could be mediocre for the next 10 years becuase we can't let go of good players when we need to. I hope we don't make that mistake

the sox are a big market team. They don't need to strip the team to the bone. The team doesn't need a full rebuild. Draft well. Trade betts. start there.

they must find a way, in any senario, to get rid of Sale and Price. I dont care if its pennies on the dollar, they need to go.

i agree. They have a better chance of dumping price and eating some money. Then trading sale and all the injury problems he has. it would be extremely difficult. Maybe he can be a 30 million a year closer:(. What a mess.

Agree with Dumbrowski"s sh!t-canning; there was just No Feckin Way that ownership could have left another off-season in his hands.

Disagree about trading Betts, ERod & especially Bogarts; there are other ways to re-build a pitching staff without gutting the team of its young, still-affordable talent.

I'd love to keep Bogarts and Betts and the young guys. Trade old expensive guys like Price and Sale.

I would prefer betts stays. I don't think he wants to be in boston. They have tried to resign him. But he is set on going to free agency. And if that is the case. you have to make sure you get something for him. You just can't take the chance and let him walk for nothing. And then there is the size of the contract he will command.

Does his contract expire after 2020?

Still would be a damn shame to lose him...but yeah I would probably deal him at the deadline if an extension can't be agreed-upon by then.
dead line? You have to do it this off season if you want to get anything for him. if you wait till the dead line you won't get much.

it must be done at the winter mettings or shortly after that. He has REAL value right now. If you wait, he could have an injury or start off in a horrific slump. Last winter would have been the best time to trade him, but if they are not going to sign him, then he needs to be moved this winter...and for a large haul
