My thought is that it was a tale of 2 "penalties". That missed call on a hold on Seymour and Ninko being offsides. Darn it.
The Giants recovering all their fumbles, the great catch by Manningham and the drop by Welker get all the attention, but the Ninkovich penalty was an under the radar killer in that game. If he stays onside, it's 4th and 7 and the Giants are punting from their own 11 yard line. In theory, the Patriots get the ball back around the 30 or so, instead of their own 8 yard line. With better field position, they might have been able to put up a FG on that drive. At a minimum, they'd have more time left on their final drive if the Giants answered with a TD.
Regarding Eli and his HOF career records, in general, if you look at him compared to Rivers and Roethlisberger, a lot of their numbers are in same ball park. They all came into the league the same year and they are ranked 6,7 and 8 all time in passing yards and passing TDs. Where Manning falls behind the other two (besides winning percentage) is passer rating (Rivers is 9th, Ben 12th, Eli 45th) and career interceptions. Eli is the active leader and is 14th all time with 241. Ben ranks 31st with 191 and Rivers is 40th with 180.
