Why not just keep that pick. And then maybe trade it during the draft and get a haul
Fins might have f'd Pitt big time. 0-2 & just lost their starting QB w issues on both sides.

Miami might have 2 top 5-10 picks between theirs & Pitt.

Agreed. Stunning move by Pittsburgh here. I credit them for still trying to win. But this trade seems like a panic move to me

Yeah they're set up to own the top of the draft.

Trades like this one is why I disagree with anyone writing articles about how the Dolphins are tanking and rules need to be put in place to prevent it. Well, who gets to decide which transactions are acceptable and which are "tanking?" Who wouldn't take three 1sts (one of which might be top 5) and a 2nd for Tunsil, Fitzpatrick and Stills?

Good for Minkah, getting far away from a team that just got pantsed by the Pats.

Damn, I might have to skip the 1st round of the 2020 NFL Draft, it is already 10% Dolphin picks...

If Miami's in Fire Sale mode, then Bill should give them a call about their TEs.

But they're getting incredibly good value in the trades they've made so far, I think that's the biggest reason the trades have happened.

I don't see a TE on their roster worthy of a high pick, and if all they're getting is a 5th, 6th or 7th rounder, why bother?

I really like Minkah. But I think the Steelers just traded away a top 10 pick because they are going to suck this year and they need to be planning for a post Ben future now. Actually they should have started like 2 years ago when he started dangling the retirement card. You don't build for the future by trading a top half of the draft pick for a guy like Minkah just because you really really hope that he'll turn into the next Polomalu.

I think they're fine-tuning the Colts/Browns model and who knows they might finally get another title as a result. I can't really fault them for what they're doing because they just don't really have a shot at taking the division from the Patriots until 3 years from now. Even if Brady retires before then the Patriots are still poised to dominate. Load up on picks, pick through UDFAs for diamonds in the rough trade what you have now for draft commodities for the future and prepare to vie for a division or league championship sometime after 2022.

I think it's actually very realistic and smart. Like 18 years of watching a division rival with the GOAT coach and GOAT QB has at least taught one of our division rivals how to try to prepare.

It's not that bad a move. Minkah was a #11 pick, and most critical of all the Steelers know they're not getting a bust. They have plenty of film of Minkah performing well against NFL caliber competition, rather than the relative crapshoot that is college football.

Second, it's a financial bargain. Because of the way rookie contracts are structured, I believe I read that over 65% of the total contract has been paid. So he's a real bargain on top of it, and you have 4 years (including the option) of team control.

I think for the Steelers, it's a good deal. For example, even if it's the #5 pick they traded away, the received the #11 pick Minkah and the other advantages of a known quantity and cheap control for 4 years.

Win-win deal for both teams IMO.

Sure you aren't getting a bust but the Steelers are heading into a future with no answer for QB. Now is not the time to be trading away a spot where you could pick the future of the franchise for a Slot CB/Safety, even if he has a year of tape behind him.

And all rookie contracts are bargains, the fact that the Dolphins paid a big chunk will be cold comfort when they're trotting out someone of the caliber of Brock Osweiler under center because they had to go bargain hunting for a QB in a year where they had no 1st rounder.

Taco Charlton might be released soon

Thought it was a good deal for Pitt. Having Hayden and Fitzpatrick is solid. Sometimes you just roll the dice on proven players rather than hoping draft pick is going to be good.

Chances of Miami landing a cb or lt better than the ones they had are stacked against them.

Wonder how much of the willingness to give up a 1st ties into the Steelers confidence in Rudolph as a long-term solution. Will definitely be able to get a good hard look at him this season.

TRADE DETAILS: Steelers trade No. 1 choice in 2020, fifth-round pick in 2020 and 6th-round pick in 2021 to the Dolphins for S Minkah Fitzpatrick. In return, they also get a fourth-round choice in 2020 and a seventh-round pick in 2021.

This doesn't really seem like a fit to me, but maybe his play will improve. On the other side of the ledger, Miami now has 9 picks in the first two rounds of the next two drafts.

Yeesh. Have to figure the Steelers will have a top 10 draft pick in 2020.

They do get to play the AFC East this year.
I do not think it is a lost cause for Pitt if Rudolph is OK.

I think the Steelers will be competitive.
This moves helps their defense greatly.
They have a great offense of line. They can still run the ball. Maybe they can get Mason Rudolph into a quick passing game… They will play some close games but the season is not lost.

I think we know a thing or two about what can happen when you lose you’re starting QB early in the year. We had some pretty good seasons in both of those instances because other parts of the team rose to the occasion.
