Running game concerns

This is our biggest "issue". There are 2 new starters, and a new set of backups. The OL is already fine in the passing game. If necessary, the running game will be there if we need it after the bye. But this a passing team, with the best QB and wide receivers ever [with other targets own our RB's and FB].

I'm not worried at all. Dante will get the OL to gel in the ruin game, as he always has done.

If anything, I'd say our line is a concern in the running game. Didn't love what I saw week one. Doesn't mean much this early though. Historically they figure it out fairly quickly.

It’s painstaking work and it takes time, but yes, they will gel eventually.

Who's panicking? There is however reason to be concerned when 4 (5 if Cannon misses time) of the 8 blockers (5 OLmen + Develin + Gronk + D.Allen) who made the running game work so well at the end of last season are not with us now this season.
Yes that’s a valid concern, but it’s only the first game of the season. The real true loses are Andrews, Gronk and Allen. They’ll have to make due if Cannon misses time. Karras looks pretty physical, but I’m more concerned with his floating shotgun snaps. Wynn looks damn good so far.

Wynn, now that he is a full participant, has been everything I was hoping for. Yes, it’s very early, but this guy looks the part.

I'm not concerned at all about the running game. I'm still just wondering when we're going to see Michel in the passing game.

Our OL is ****ed right now, it's that simple. Even the fumble was hard to blame on Michel because he was totally outnumbered. It's easier to force a fumble when you know you have backup to make the tackle.

They need to get Michel involved in the passing game to open up his run game. Right now when he is in the game they seem to key in on the run.

Which is why burkhead has had more success lately...because he can catch the ball

126 yards on 35 carries ... 3.6 avg.

2018 .... 4.3 avg.

This will make Michel runs much better.. Every team expects a run when he is in the field.
It has become predictable to a certain extend

Now that Wynn is out...again...our running game is going to become worse before it becomes better...if it does.

You would think with our wrs we should be better running the ball. Maybe as AB gets acclimated more defensive resources will be spent trying to stop pass, but watching the games, though we may not get a lot of yards, we get first downs.

First two games in 2018 - 55 carries for 204 yards rushing, 3.7 YPC.

Three OL replacements, new TEs, more passing, still two blowouts.

Many had assumed coming into the season that the Pats would continue their winning formula from the end of last season and postseason of a run heavy team with Tom mostly under center, winning time of possession, and passing game slowly opening under play action. The first game was a bit discouraging but I understand it’s early days.

It seems the loss of Gronkowski and Allen as well as 2-3 changes in the OL will in aggregate significantly impact the potency of the run game from end of last year. Michel’s 15 yards on 14 carries quickly led to him being shelved in favour of doses of White and Burkhead for the rest of the game. Despite offseason and preseason attempts to integrate Michel into the passing game, it seems we are still a bit too predictable about our run intention with Michel in and have to heavily rely on strong execution which appears harder with the personnel changes. Michel did go 3/3 on 3rd and 1 carries so that was encouraging.

For those who have broken down the film or watched the game again, can someone elaborate how much of us putting the run game aside after the first quarter was the Steelers’ stacking the box and overplaying the run versus our own execution challenges with the drop off from Izzo and Karras etc.

I guess we’ll try and find the identity of this team as the season progresses and I am sure Josh will do whatever is best for the team and certainly we were very successful with the 20 personnel we deployed. I am just curious what that identity will be since I certainly was a bit surprised to see Tom throwing for 350 yards in a blowout win.

Fantastic win guys. Let’s see how Michel’s role evolves this season.
So the guys that open the holes have nothing to do with it? If's not a perfect team. The good teams now are not scoring 30+ points running the leather. Or do we have to up that now to 40+ games. Like Arena football.

combine that with Michel's yards after contact being very poor so far and this looks like an average run game, maybe.

interesting stats that are surprising. Shows that Michel is going down far too easily right now with only 1.6 yards after contact.

What's the plan if Develin can't go this weekend?

Develin and Cannon both limited and possibly questionable for Sunday would not help.
