Malcolm Mitchell is not in a good place right now...

I missed it. I hate it when work gets in the way of my Pats obsession. What was the gist of the argument? or do have a link?
We were talking about busts and his name came up. The argument was between him and Chad Jackson. People were calling Jackson a bust, but were defending McKenzie.

I can’t remember what thread it was, but maybe someone reading this might be able to find it. It wasn’t too long of an argument.

An injury early in your career, ala McKenzie and Robert Edwards, and Katzenmoyer (neck) gives you a pass on being called a bust, especially a severe injury that is career ending...

That’s unfortunate, sorry to hear he is going through tough times. He can always say he played a key part in one of the most iconic nights in nfl history

Meh....the dude made over a million. If he's not ******ed then that is a lot of money.

Get your **** together man.

That’s not a lot of money dude. Did you take into account agent fees and taxes? He’s also young so that money will run out even if your smart with it.

Plus, as others have mentioned, his injury rehab attempts can't have been cheap.

Malcolm Mitchell Contract Details, Salary Cap Charges, Bonus Money, and Contract History | Over The Cap

According to OverTheCap his earnings from the Patriots totaled $1,390,992. That’s not a lot of money.

Those earnings will be taxed at or near the maximum rate by both the IRS and Massachusetts, so at a rough guess he will pay around $550,000 to $600k in taxes. NFL agent will rake 3%, his accountant and lawyer will bill premium rates, and he’s got those out of pocket expenses for uncovered medical bills and rehab. Let’s be conservative and say this all total another $100k. So he made almost $1.4mm and has about $.7mm gone right off the top, or half of what he made.

Another way to look at it: he was in the league three years, and he’s been retired since last March. So those earnings cover about four years. In other words, he got paid about $350,000 per year. And he has the rehab and training costs out of pocket, so he’s really not much better off than the average corporate suit or independent professional.

It’s not like he got a huge sack of money deposited into his bank account without having bills to pay, he really just got a decent salary with a significant cost burden along with it.

Maybe he can get into broadcasting. He doesn’t have the career resume and marquee name to hit the big time national broadcast booth right away, but it would be nice if he could hook up with the regional network. Do the Pats need a fresh voice in the booth?

Chad Jackson tore his ACL his rookie year defending a kick return in the AFC title game. Why he was doing that after he was traded up for in the 2nd round is for another debate. He said he wasn’t the same since the injury, but he doesn’t get a pass?

A talented young receiver off to a great start in the NFL, pulled himself up by his bootstraps to author a children’s book. Such a heart warming story until derailed by injury. Cannot help but contrast with the lives of a couple of our current receivers.

Anyone saying he’s a bust is forgetting he was important in helping us win a super bowl. That justifies his tenure here as being successful. There are thousands of players active and retired who wish they played a pivotal in winning a championship.

12 catches total his rookie year before the injury.....

Are you serious, dude?

Apparently you've never struggled with depression. Regardless of why someone feels depressed, it's an utterly crippling condition that I'd never wish on anyone.

Amen. The best description I've ever heard of severe depression is this:

Depression wants to get you alone in a room and then kill you. [And, as someone who's been there: it's really, really good at the former.]

Devin McCourty is still doing STs.

No Pats fan should ever crap on Malcolm Mitchell

I hope the moderators permaban you. What a despicable comment.

Just have to add on, someone who has never been crushed by depression probably has no idea what it is like. Thus, he is a very fortunate fellow, who doesnt know it. But life is funny, live long enough you usually get the chance to be on all sides of things. I wouldnt wish depression on my worst enemy. Considering suicide and self harm as a form of relief from the agony, is a pretty horrible set of choices.

One of the first steps to getting better is admitting you don’t feel right. I’m glad he’s working on this and doing what he needs to get right. Best of luck to him.

Depends on your point of view i guess. I have a friend with cerebral palsy yet he enjoys life to the max. Goes skydiving, traveling etc. Does Mitchell want to talk to him about getting a ****ty deal?

Don’t worry.....some day, you will need some compassion .... maybe it will be there, maybe it won’t

Honestly, neither am I but no one gives a sh!t cause I’m not a pro athlete or someone famous. Just someone who had to come up through hell but people don’t care about the average folks.

I feel bad for him but there are so many people worse off. And I’m not claiming to be one of them, just recognize that there are those who have a life worse than him.

I work with division 1 student athletes and I constantly tell them: your sport is what you DO, it's not who you ARE. Because of exactly what Mitchell is going through. For these athletes, their entire identity is often completely wrapped up in being an athlete, and they are not remotely prepared for the day that's no longer true. I work hard to help them see that sports are terrific, and being an athlete is awesome, but someday, even if they have long and successful professional careers (which of course, the vast majority do not), they'll still be done being athletes by their mid-30s, which means the bulk of their lives will be spent NOT as athletes.

Sucks that injuries took his football career away...

however....

he needs to keep things in perspective.

He's made over $1.3m in salary.
Has made the connections because of playing football in the NFL and in UGA (it's about who you know not what you know when it comes to becoming successful)
He doesn't have crippling student loans
And he really seems like talented and intelligent individual outside of football

I hope things work out. We don't win that SB without him. He really could have been a taller Deion Branch for us.

I’m a people and an average folk that cares about average folks and I can tell you that there is always someone somewhere that is worse or better off than the person you or anyone else is currently thinking of even if that person is you. It is the theorem of transmogrification. In other words, love the one you’re with....even if it is just you. The other thing you could consider is going to the pinned threads in this forum. One thread is I Could Use Your Thoughts and Prayers. The other is UK Pats Fan Suffering Depression. There are a lot of ordinary posters here being extraordinary by supporting and trying to help average folks like you and I through words of kindness, concern and advice.

I am sure Malcolm knows that. But lots of people struggle when their career ends - even people in their 60’s. How much money they made or how famous they were does not necessarily ease the pain.

he needs to keep things in perspective.

That's a hell of a lot easier said than done when you're depressed. It f—ks up your mind so you can't get things in the proper perspective. Depression magnifies your faults and minimizes your accomplishments. It amplifies your fears and crushes your hopes.
