Belichick's Cap Magic

I wish the guys who are saying the Pats gave AB a 15MM contract would check the facts underneath the agent bravado. We got an elite top 5 WR for $6MM on a one year prove it deal with some baggage (even more than we expected). Meanwhile Atlanta just signed an elite top 5 WR for TWENTY-FIVE MILLION and no baggage.

I doubt very much that AB gets a second year under his current contract. The only way he stays is some kind of extension that wipes away the $20MM+ cap hit is due in 2020. In the end I believe he will regain some measure of his reputation back after contributing (very quietly) to the Pats offense, and then move on.

But for anyone to think that AB is ANYTHING but a bargain isn't getting the true picture

As for McCourty, he is coming to the end, not only in our minds but his own. Devin has shown he has a future far beyond being just a football player. If Tom is a year to year guy, so is Devin. He shows no signs of even wanting an extension. I say leave it alone.

As for Mr February - I'd like to see him be Mr September, October, Nov, or December for a change before I extend his deal. They obviously love him, so if he gave them a team friendly deal I'd do it.

As for KVN - I'd extend him if I had the cap space. He's fast becoming part of the NE community. I don't think he ask for the last dollar

The other LB I'd mention is Jaime Collins. Assuming we see more of the same each game, He's a guy I'd like to keep around another 2 or 3 years. But that will have to wait because of where we are with the cap.

Ken, we all know you think Elite Wide Receivers are overrated to a teams success. You find a way to sneak it in every post you make

Check this out: AB ($4.75 million) , Edelman (5.08 million) and Gordon (2.025 million) combined salary cap (13.855 million) is LESS than that of 9 individual receivers currently. (chart via @Jason_OTC)

It is completely true, though. It tends to separate the teams who win championships and teams who are just marketing shirts.

Chief fans are convinced Sammy Watkins is going to have a monster year.

His entire career says otherwise.

THAT cap # for THAT player is madness.

Yup, he better, because he's taking up alot of space from other KC Chiefs players.

No doubt, he's a great WR. But the key part in that sentence is "WR". Ken is right - - an individual WR is not worth 10% of a team's cap space if you're intending to win a Super Bowl.

In the meantime, that is just genius by the Pats.

KC is living on Mahomes and Hill on cheap 1st contracts. as soon as they get paid then they have to man up. Teams with great young qb's can afford to spend lots of money on other positions. Look at the Seahawks a few years back with Russel Wilson cheap. Once they get paid you really separate the men from the boys. If you think KC's d sucks now, wait until Mahomes goes from 4 million a year to 30 million a year.

Who is great? Sammy Watkins?

Hill just got paid.

LOL - - you're right. Damn, I've got to stop multi-tasking!

A $19+ million cap for a WR whose high water mark was his rookie season in 2014 with 65 receptions and hasn't had more than 40 receptions in a season since 2015????????

That's just bat$hit crazy.

Yikes!!!! Next year, Watkins' cap hit is $21 million and Hill's is $17,650,000 - - their combined is $37.650 million in 2020. (Source: spotrac.com)

And then Mahomes will def want to get paid then or by 2021.

Not a team that is built to last........

KCs strategy was to get Hill on a deal that theoretically less than market value (less than Jones and Thomas). It was a risky, but reasonable approach.

I can't imagine they'll keep Watkins' $22m for next year when he can be cut w/ $7m dead money. He just might have a big year as he is basically playing for his next contract.

Looking at comments about KC and how are they going to keep their elite talent when the bill comes due, and it just makes me appreciate all the more the skills of Bill the economist, coach, and GM. Having a strong middle class is the way to go. We as fans lament when he cuts ties with our favorites, but we lost Trey Flowers, Trent Brown, Patterson, Waddle, and Brown to free agency and did they look like it mattered against Pittsburgh?

They hit on 4 out of 5. I think they'd like to have that Waddle decision back, though.........

True, but he's on IR now, not that it would have happened in Pats camp...
