See, this is the problem. My wife wasn’t aware of this today until I explained it to her, and she’s well educated. She had just assumed that no woman would want to bring on the humiliation of a rape case, and being publicly judged is the only option.
But...Rape victims are protected by specific laws so they can keep their anonymity and avoid being embarrassed on the witness stand. That’s why these laws exist.

But then you do have agenda driven turds like SMY, peddling why filing a criminal case is pointless and explaining that we shouldn’t dare question why a person would jump directly to a civil suit (thus opening themselves up to discovery in exchange for a chance at compensation). That she didn’t even attempt to file a criminal complaint, even after the fact, even two years after, is appalling. Looks like she’s just counting on the SMYs of the world to yell and scream at people who question this very suspicious choice to seek justice in a civil court while not even contacting authorities at any point.
I'm not really sure how this isn't logically equivalent to saying "rape can't be a problem because there are laws against it." Enforcement is left to humans and nobody is stopping the person with confidential information from being sloppy even without malicious intent. Then you have to consider the material corruption in the police force making it even less likely things move directly toward justice. The existence of protective laws is better than the absence, but they only go as far as any law. There are many reasons not to feel comfortable trusting the justice system.
