Giants Fan Arrested For Terrorism Threats Againts Patriot's Fans

This is a slippy slope I don't want to go too far down. I don't think people should type stupid things like this online but not every threatening statement should be treated the same.

In the heat of the moment people say dumb crap. I don't want to make that something you go to a tiny cell surrounded by rapist and murders for.

We should understand the difference between posting something like a hate manifesto on a racist site and threatening to carry out an attack vs being a sports fan and threatening to kill fans of other teams cause a trade or signing happens.

It's not always hard to know the credible threats we should devote resources to.
Uhh, yea, it's really not though.

Don't threaten to commit a mass shooting, like ever, for any reason.

It's super simple and stable, not slippery at all IMO.

It's not about establishing credibility in the threat, it's about holding citizens accountable for their words and actions. What this man did was stupid, selfish and dangerous, "joke" or not and he should be made an example of.

4 of the top 5 have multiple Super Bowls, I'm surprised the 1 hit wonders (Seagulls) are in the top 5. They won't play in the SB for another 18 years.

#not really surprised
Yea these things always crack me up

#Duh

Besides, I'm sure we all get annoyed sometimes by stupidity from other pats fans, comes with the territory of having a large fanbase/successful team.

If the Pats sucked (example Bills)...... the nation would love the Patriot fanbase (or not give it much thought whatsoever). Again, see the Buffalo Bills, hardcore fans that you almost feel sorry for. I'll take the hate all day/every day.

Sure he needs to be held accountable. I don't think that means we shouldn't have different standards for different circumstances. One for people that likely to be an actual danger and one for people that aren't. We can't look inside someone's head to see their inner most thoughts, but there are a number of things we can look at to reliably establish credibility.

In one case we should imprison a person and then if need be put them in a mental hospital for life if we believe they may be an actual danger to society.

In another case when someone is likely not to be a danger to society. I don't think it is in society's best interest to devote resources to prolong incarceration for such people.

There's a good reason first time offenders and particularly first time offenders of non-violent crimes are usually treated with a certain amount of leniency. Prison doesn't tend to make already non-violent society members less violent. The opposite can often be true.

While I agree that certain standards need to be upheld and sometimes examples made it is in all our interest to pick the right people to make examples of people. I do not believe this to be such a person at this time personally.

And I'm pretty sure that's what will happen here. If he was exhibiting the typical preparatory behavior of a mass shooter, that's one thing. If he's just an idiot who is redirecting his general frustration about life in a single blurt on social media, that's another.

The problem for him is that he did this inside a current social context where mass shootings have become more than a daily happening (279 and counting this year in the US), so there's an unusual degree of sensitivity that will make harsher reactions more likely.

There are tens of thousands of NFL fans that have spoken threatening words about Patriots players and fans over the years, and been heard by others in their family, at the bar, etc. Nobody took them seriously, including the people who said them.

NFL football is supposed to be a release from the frustrations of our daily lives, a way to escape for a few moments/hours. The Pats' domination is making that increasingly difficult for some fan bases. :)

I’ve never understood Giants fans deep hatred for the Patriots.

I sincerely fear for Bill Belichik.
There are 31 billionaires that would like to see him disappear.

He is the reason for this dynasty and can be easily seen as this cranky, evil genius that will go to any lengths to win.

It's not inconceivable some nutjob, unstable fan could fixate on doing him harm.
I'm sure he has received death threats and all famous people acquire stalkers.

There was a great interview of Jerry Lewis aired on public radio shortly after his death where he talked about stalkers.

He said he had 5.
Great Quote from him:
"It comes with the dinner."

"If you don't want to deal with it, don't take a job where you're in the public eye."

One person harassed him for over 10 years and would call randomly in the middle of the night.
He said he crossed the line when he threatened his daughter.
The man was convicted , went to prison, and was killed in prison.
Jerry said he considered himself a humanitarian, but was relieved to know this person was no longer on this earth.

Idiot

I’ve never understood Giants fans deep hatred for the Patriots.
It's related to 3 factors: 1) long ago before the AFL came to be the Giants owned NE in terms of fan popularity, 2) Parcells, 3) Belichick.

Darwin theory failed us when he was born.

I guess I get it with Parcells. But Belichick was huge in helping them win those Super Bowls. Wasn’t like he just bolted for New England right after.

BB probably would have won them a few more Super Bowls as the HC if Tuna had retired before Bill left for Cleveland.

Deep down they knew they were lucky as ever to win those two SBs..
The second one, sure.

No one came close to touching them in 86, though.

Yeah I dunno, the days of being able to casually make death threats online coming to an end doesn't really fill me with a ton of grief.

In all seriousness, I agree.

WAYBACK MACHINE:
Back in the 90s on USENET I was not especially polite but not abusive either. Yes, a wiseass. Mostly Jets & Buffalo AFCE trash talk. Anyway some poster took serious exception to my posting existance. He somehow researched me, found out where I worked, the name of my boss and company CEO. Threatened to show up at noon someday and give me the beating I deserved. In engineering, I'd occasionally play hoops outside at noon vs manufacturing. I maintained situational awareness of anyone approaching the court during games for a few weeks. Back then, the thought of being shot never occurred to me.

Jets fans threaten to shoot themselves every week - I guess that's not terrorism.

Yeah, I should have explained it further. I have friends who are Giants fans and they've explained it to me this way: they always felt that the AFL teams, Pats in particular, were unworthy of any sort of equal footing with the old NFL teams. Thus, Parcells and Belichick should have never even considered having anything to do with any AFL original team. Since 2001,the Pats success and dominance have only made them hate more. They cling to their 2 SB wins over NE like drowning people cling to life rafts. They're really insanely jealous people, LOL...
