All-time Patriots team, Patsfan geezer thread: how many NON-BB/TB12-era players make the team?

Nice list. A few additions...

RB: Mack Herron
LB: Nelson, Blackmon

If you're talking "fun to watch", mini- Mack might be #1 all-time Patriot.

Geezer defined as “old enough to see them play”. :)

I can think of a few:

John Hannah
Stanley Morgan
Mike Haynes
In the two-TE offense, Russ Francis

And while I loved Steve Grogan...

...this guy’s a proven big game backup QB. :)

Wow! Could you imagine a 2 TE set with Francis and Gronk?!! Yikes!

If we're talking strictly starters, this is very tough.

No QBs
Irving Fryar opposite Randy Moss at wideout with Edelman in the slot
No TEs although I loved Coates and Francis
No RBs - Corey Dillon and Kevin Faulk in completely different roles
Hannah at guard opposite Stephen Neal
Bruce Armstrong opposite Matt Light at tackle
No DTs or DEs
Tipett at LB with Mayo and Hightower (this is the deepest position of all)
CB ? Ty Law and Gilmore
No safeties before BB

Announcer - Gil Santos
Globe FB writer - Will McDonough
Mostly this, it’s a good list.

I need Welker in my lineup, possibly even over Moss due to longevity, certainly over Fryar.

Curtis Martin was excellent, he has to be in over Dillon. Sorry but Sam Bam and Mini Mack weren’t at that level.

Coates was incredible but Gronkowski gets him.

Hannah’s a tackle. I’d say Hannah and Solder. Guards are Mankins and Gray. Probably Koppen as C.

And Mike Haynes has to beat Gilmore on longevity as well as ST...for now, at least.

Larry Whigham

The Snow Plow dude?

Haynes
Francis/Coats
Curtis Martin/Sam Bam
Hannah
Morgan
Drew is QB 2
Tippet was very good

Darryl Stingley would have been so good
Too...

Rip...

Pat Patriot over Flying Elvis :)

A couple of comments. First, and most important, John Hannah was a guard.

Welker is an interesting case. Absolutely created the slot receiver position, but Edelman is better in my book based strictly on toughness and David Ortiz-level clutch plays. I picked Irving Fryar to pair with Moss outside the numbers because was electric and played with lesser QBs.

At some point we have to look at teams that made or won a Super Bowl. Several people agree with you, but I don't think Curtis Martin's New England credentials measure up to Corey Dillon's, especially 2004. As the primary rusher, Dillon in 2004 was the best we've ever seen in a Patriots uniform. My second back for this purpose was the pass catching, blitz pickup, back that is a hallmark of the BB offenses. I picked Kevin Faulk as a slight favorite over James White.

At CB, Haynes loses out in my group to Stephon Gilmore and Ty Law due to the Super Bowls angle.

Leon Gray is better than Armstrong and Light
Haynes was the best patriot CB
Clayborne was the equal to Law, If he won 3 SB he would have been HOF
Stanley Morgan is on the other side of Moss, With Terry Glenn in the slot.
Mack Herron is the returner

Terry Glenn over Edelman or Welker? Maybe based on pure athletic talent but certainly not as a player

Haynes was on a different level, one of the best players in history, neither Ty nor Gilmore was in his class.
Glenn was a DeSean Jackson clone, far better player than Welker, but Edelman’s better than all of of them. You do have to wonder how great Glenn would have been, though, if teamed with Brady and McDaniels.

Hannah was a G, never a T. The opposite with Gray.

Pete Brock may be the best Pats center, though it’s a tough position to judge

Bill Lenakaitis..quit the NFL and tortured everybody as a dentist

Say on offense we vote 2 TE's, 3 WR's, 2 RB's, and 1 FB (14 total), on D we have 2 DE's, 2 DT's, 2 OLB's, 2 ILB's, 4 DB's (12 total), and 8 ST/all-arounds. That's 34 players total, and I have it 17 to 17 pre vs post 2001. I'm basing this on say 4 years of peak performance, not longevity.

TE: Gronk, Coates
T: Leon Gray, Cannon
G: Hannah, Mankins
C: Pete Brock
WR: Moss, Morgan, Edelman
RB: Jim Nance, Dillon
FB: Sam Gash
QB : Brady
DT: Wilfork, Houston Antwine
DE: Seymour, Julius Adams (somehow Willie needs to fit here)
ILB: Nick Buoniconti, Vincent Brown
OLB: Tippett, Hightower
CB: Haynes, Law
S: McCourty, Milloy
K: Vinatieri
P: Camarillo
Coverage: Slater, Tatupu
KR: Herron
PR: Haynes
all-around: Troy Brown, Gino Cappelletti

I didn't pick a good name when I registered here years ago, I'm really a 57 year Pats fan, I got hooked in 1962
