Patriots Cuts

Member of the tribe here. I remember my grandfather, whenever someone with a tribal name made the news, wanting to know if he/she was Jewish. Nothing wrong with showing pride in your people, or making a good natured jest.

Yes, Belichick has done this before.
I know it is not a popular view nationwide, but with the respect Belichick has for both the game, and for players who have performed well and sacrificed for the team, I see Belichick doing alot of stuff like this behind the scenes, and I think players are aware of it, and make the Pats an even more attractive destination for a vet on the back side of his career.

I'd wait till the bitter end--at 3:59 to release all players I intended to re-sign the next day. No point in doing it earlier, and it more or less announces the reason for the cut.

30 mins to go...

Hoyer will end up in Denver. There’s no future for him in Indy. When Chad Kelly gets back in week 3, Brissett had better be on his game as Kelly was very impressive in training camp and preseason. And, to think, Kelly could still be in a Denver if John Elway the GM wasn’t... well, John Elway the GM.

Broncos interested in Hoyer

Have to seriously question Elway’s judgement these last few years. Flacco was one of the worst available options (Fitzpatrick, Tannehill and Bortles all went for cheaper cap wise).

Maybe he’ll get to retire instead of being fired when **** hits the fan again.

The name I will be watching for is Derek Rivers.

Have to agree with the above, seems like Pats could have got at least a 7th? Could this be Belichick doing a veteran a favour, releasing him so teams could compete for him, and he could make more dough?
If he did it would be dumb and NOT in the "best interests of the team". If he had trade value Bill should try and get it. Hoyer can always refuse to go.

Belichick is not a transactional leader. His treatment of veterans has served him well. Such treatment helps him in getting players to want to come to New England.

Yup, he passed on a 7th. The team could have looked at this transaction only and made the decision on Hoyer's future. That's just no how Belichick runs the team.

And yes, passing on a 7th, is indeed in the "best interest of the team".

I thought Munson would get enough ST snaps to be worth a roster spot over the vets who will be backups. Instead, there's going to be serious depth and experience on defense.

My thought is if Hoyer’s release was a short term thing you’d want the rumors of his return out there almost simultaneously to reports of his release. They could come from the same sources. Why not make it public? It tells other teams to not bother. You’re not doing anything wrong.
But why? What’s the point in doing that? I’ve never seen it dine, have you?

I’ve posted several times about using short term releases to allow the Patriots to wait on putting some players on IR tomorrow so you might be able to activate them later this season. It’s an old tactic from the 70s or 80s when all IR’d players could return if the team cutdown to the roster limit before the player was put on IR. So, you don’t have to tell me how this works. A player, however, would be unlikely go along with it if it meant being off the roster for game one as you’re proposing because getting their full salary guaranteed is that important.
hoyers salary is guaranteed

What is your response if/when Andrews gots on Ir and Hoyer gets resigned?

Kelly is an immature clown with a good arm - he'll never crack the NFL as a starter (and will probably only last a year or 2 as a back up before doing something dumb - again).

The guy has more red flags than China on a national holiday.

Most of the remaining transactions to get to 53 will be injury related. Putting some players on the IR and when or releases with injury settlements for some. Actually, this appears to have been a rather predictable cutdown day.

Rapsheet says Gunner made the roster now as the Pats have decided to trade Keion Crossen to the Texans.

So as we reach the deadline, Andrews is on the 53 which implies they hope to get him back in a few months after he goes on IR.
