One respondent to those tweets asked a good question, though I'm going to modify it just a bit. If you're tossing out

Edeman
Gordon
Thomas
Dorsett
Harry/Meyers

and they're all playing at a reasonably high level for them (meant mostly for Edelman/Gordon/Thomas), which teams in the NFL have the defense back depth to handle that?

The Patriots.

Shouldn't we be seeking a TE with less risk injury wise and with a better contract status?

Before he had a Kidney injury last year...TE Jack Doyle played 76 out of a possible 78 games.

True but messing up kidneys is not like pulling a hamstring.

Doyle will retire during preseason game 4 at Paul Brown stadium so fans don't have a chance to boo him.

Cutting Thomas would be shocking based on the actions of the last few days.

I disagree. I could see BB cutting Thomas prior to game one and bringing him back after game 1 since Thomas is a vested veteran. But I think it has more to do with the situation with Hoyer/Stidham than with what's going on at WR..

Yeah, Lazar has had some pretty weird takes lately, if Thomas isn't a lock to make the 53 there wouldn't be much reason to bring him off PUP so late in the preseason. Would be better off just leaving him on PUP into the season and seeing what your WR situation looks like when he's eligible to come off later.

I could see BB also going with 7 OL on the week 1 roster to secure some of this young talent.

There is exactly zero cost in keeping Skipper and/or Croston on the 53, and then replacing them when a replacement is available. As soon as a player is available, sign him and cut one of our OL's. There is no reason to go with 7 OL's when we know we need more. After all, the player we secure might need a couple of weeks to be ready to play, even in an emergency. Alternatively, belichick might secure the player 10 days after the cut.

The cost might be losing a player like Munson.

I see little risk to going with 7 because I don't think either Skipper or Coleston will be claimed.

I think they're even practice squad eligible.

But wasn't Munson already in Pats PS? What makes you think he can't be again?

Munson's sort of flashed.

If not Munson, maybe one of Rivers/Calhoun or Obi Meifonwu.

My point is beside Karras and the rookie these JAGS have zero value. So why keep any, if you won't dress them week one?

IMO at least one, and probably both, go unclaimed and we can just carry them on the practice squad.

You guys turning up your nose at Hoyer for Doyle are hilarious.

If the Pats can get a TE who had 80 catches in one season in exchange for Hoyer that would be highway robbery for us.

He did that one year. He averaged 29 catches/yr.

Just FYI to those that think Indy is in a super desperate position at QB—

Chad Kelly (Jim Kelly’s nephew) 2019 preseason:

41 of 57 for 445 yards (71.9%) , 2 touchdowns, 1 INT, QB rating of 98.9

+

7 rushes for 87 yards

The issue is that he’s suspended for the first 2 games, so they’ll need to add someone as a backup to Brissett through the end of week two, but thus far, Kelly is making the most of his second chance.

I think it’s obvious to everyone that IND will be forced to add another QB for the first couple of weeks, but I’m not sure that they’re going to do anything drastic like trade TE Doyle, especially with cutdowns coming from the other 31 teams in only 5 days from now.

Thomas talked a bit yesterday how he has good days with burst and other days with physical limitations. I don’t believe that he’s a lock, myself.

While they could’ve kept him on PUP, it may have been a good idea to try and get him some time on the field in actual practice situations. This may have been done as an evaluation move, since he hasn’t seen the field in 8-9 months. We’ve seen Bill give players the benefit of trying to catch on with another team, especially the proven vets.

Based upon this it looks like Lacosse practiced. Seems like he and Izzo will most likely be the duo that makes the 53, barring a trade.

Not sure how likely it is given how little BB risks in terms of roster depth but would not be shocked if the initial 53 only has a single TE on the roster and Izzo ends up on the PS.

You can get some of the blocking by just going with an additional lineman and a week later you get Kendricks back. This gives you even more flexibility with the initial roster spots (and maybe smuggling someone onto the PS).

Ha ha we're still here?

Izzo will be a solid backup TE somewhere.

If you cut him, he's gone.

Yeah, there's enough positives in the preseason from Izzo to see someone grabbing him at the very least as a TE3. Why wouldn't the Jets take him (Herndon is suspended 1st 4 games)?
