Pats Release Ryan Allen - Jake Bailey is the new punter

Gost's career postseason numbers are

39 for 44 on FGA (88.6%)
88 for 92 on XPA (95.7%)

It's ludicrous, not "understandable", to demand absolute perfection from any NFL kicker, be it regular season or playoffs. " OMG! We remember 2 of Gost's 4 FGA misses in his 44 playoff attempts! He should have competition and/or should go!" That's pathetic, and fans who use that argument should probably be barred from ever watching sports again.

And, to go back to Justin Tucker as the comparison, he missed a FG in the Ravens loss to the Chargers last year. In fact, his miss left the Chargers with a short field, and the Chargers drove for a TD. In a game that ended up being a 6 point Chargers win, that was a 10 point swing.

Vinatieri was perfect! (If you don't count all of his playoff misses that is)

Not apologizing if reposting:

Slater and Allen were telepathically linked and just playing out of their minds in last year's superbowl.

Jones & Da Burkmeister!

Isn't the locker room message of releasing him now not later a gesture of respect to a longtime team member? There's always an early veteran cut or two, designed to do right by a player who has done right by you and give him the best possible chance to find a new job.
I’m not sure how the locker room gains comfort based on the timing of a cut.
The higher priced vet who had his best game ever in the team’s most important/recent game just got axed.
For vets he respects, BB does place his bullet square in the player’s chest early instead of letting the vet bleed out over the course of cut downs.

I think this move has more to do with money and team building than Ryan's performance. Ryan was set to make good money (for a punter) and was on a one year deal. Bailey is on a rookie contract locked up cheap for 4 years.

Shocked at this move. Right footed punter?? WTF??

Always thought BB was enamored with left footed punters?? Guess he is changing that philosophy as well, Bailey can also kick off which may prove interesting...

Releasing Allen now as opposed to two weeks from now gives him the opportunity to catch on with another team.. one of the ways the Pats do business, they are not cold hearted ba...rds..
Gotta zig when they think zag.

FWIW, in 2018 Allen's stats:

1. Tied for 23d in kicks inside the 20.
2. 16th in average yards per punt.
3. Tied for 25th in average return per punt.
4. 19th in net yards per punt.

Yup, below average year capped by a great game/Super Bowl. Brought in competition and the new guy performed.

None of this should be a factor in any way. Allen isn't gone because he was bad, he's gone because we found someone cheaper and potentially better. If there are people in the locker room who think a good Super Bowl made Allen entitled to a roster spot, BB would probably like to know their names so he can cut them. The past doesn't matter, only future projections.

BB does not know the meaning of the word, entitled.

Good info. Numbers with punters can sometimes be deceiving, because of a lot of it is situational (a 25 yard punt hurts average, but if it pins inside the 10, it's a good punt, etc). But that's pretty mediocre to below average across the board. There's definitely some recency bias when it comes to Allen, because his SB was one for the ages. He's a good punter, and I'm sad to see him go, but there was room to move upwards in a lot of areas for sure. Now it's up to Bailey to make the most of it.

Allen was average at best. We upgraded with Jake the leg Bailey.

Even though they've done this before (with Zoltan Mesko), this is a surprise. Thank you Ryan for all your hard work and your spectacular play in the last Super Bowl. Good luck to you on your new team (where I am sure you will land soon). Man the NFL can be rough...

Meanwhile, Gostkowski is struggling and now must get his head around having a rookie holder.
I was thinking maybe the reason for this move is kickoffs plus FGs & extra points are becoming too much for Gost, so they got someone else to handle kickoffs to help him more with the kicks for points.

I pronounced Gost officially unreliable after the Miami game last year, and his two easy misses in the preseason have not given me the warm fuzzies. Sigh...

IMO this will be his last season with the team.

If cut the team saves ~$4m off the cap.

We just need to get thru 2019.

Gost is still a good kicker.

Maybe we could have a sticky thread which highlights just how a great (and consistent) a kicker Gostkowski has been.

Criticising a player for missing, without paying attention to the context of what we should reasonably expect is ludicrous. Seems to be turning into something of a virus.

I'm not concerned about missing kicks in pre-season. I don't worry when Edelman drops a pass in PS, I don't worry when Brady throws an INT in PS, and I don't worry when Hightower misses a tackle in PS. That's the point of it for veterans, to knock the rust off. And kickers sometimes miss kicks. If they were automatic, they wouldn't even bother having kickers, you'd just get to elect for 3 points and move on to the next drive.

Yup. New guy must be an irresistible talent.

The stats tell a different story.
