Is it too early to start the Chase Winovich DROY talk?

I liked this pick a lot on draft day and am impressed with him so far, but JHC!!!!....we're going into week 3 of the phucking preseason. How many times have rookies given fans boners in the preseason only to see them disappear on the depth chart by week 6?

His motor reminds me of Luke Kuechly.
If his motor is half of Keuchly's then we are in for an amazing run with him...When I've seen Carolina play in person, Keuchly stood out more than anyone for that. The guy is different level.

IMHO we can discuss Winovich' skills and abilities which make him a applicant for a DROY. He definitely has tools to be considered as a candidate. However at this stage of the season it is like reading tea leaves because we do not know how will present other rookies.
One thing is for sure - we have a player who will give a lot of dynamics and energy for our defense.

Is predicting DROY for Winovich is akin to the "Curse of the Cover of Madden" so far he has looked pretty good but as he is a relative unknown the opposing O has not picked up how to block him.. my eyeballs tells me he looks good, but lets see as the season progresses...

This is a lot premature..

Yes, he is. One of my best friends lives in Charlotte and I remember the day after the draft when Carolina took him he called me and asked what I knew about Keuchly. After having watched him at BC I knew he was special and told my buddy they were going to love Keuchly. I really like Winovich and his game thus far reminds me somewhat of Bruschi's, but it's too early for any genuine comparisons with those guys, in my opinion.

I liked what I heard when we drafted him. He sounds like what Edelman would be like if he played linebacker. I don't expect him to be a regular on defense at the start of the year, but he'll make his bones on ST then around week 8 he'll have a nice role carved out on 3rd downs. That's my prediction. Guy with a motor like that, you've got to manage him a bit early on in his rookie year to help prevent the wall.

The Jets message board is going nuts over Winovich...

Winovich
They’ve been (understandably) obsessing over the Pats for 20 years, he’s been in the league (and a NY coach) longer than that and so many still can’t spell Belichick’s name right. I’d say it was intentional but I just don’t think they know.

No, but his helmetless poster will be on more teenage girls walls than any other rookie.

Can we wait until he plays a down in a real game?

Also some players on other teams will be on the field as a starter and play most of that teams defensive snaps. Chase will be eased in

This is the bigger issue. He just won't have a comparable # of snaps to win the numbers beauty contest that is DROY. (Unless...there are a couple of injuries to key edge players, so let's pray he doesn't get the snaps.)

Interesting. Doesn't Houston have o-line problems?
In college Gary had a bad habit of getting frustrated and emotional. It was often Winovich who got him to hit the reset button and get his head back in the game.

Never too early to be a homer. 19-0. DROY, OROY, MVP, Super Bowl. Who gives a ****. Shoot for the stars

Luke was a special player at BC...carried it over to the NFL......Wino seems to have that same motor and personality......Hoping he continues to grow in the Patriots system...

Despite being the 77th pick, Winovich currently has the 10th best odds to win DROY on Bovada. He's behind 9 first round picks (8 in the top 10).

As a homer I get sucked in the excitement of upside yearly but if:

  • Shelton somehow pulled his head out of his ass (looks good so far)
  • Winovich plays like a DROY contender
The defense would be an absolute curtain at all 3 levels
