My first thought is camp body hopefully LaCosse injury isn't to bad but seems he will be out for at least a little while.

My second thought would be why can't he compete with TE group and maybe BB see's something in his game that shows he's ready for a role of some sort.

Hey, I like the trade!
It's a low-risk, big-reward gamble on a still-young TE prospect straight outta Central Casting, who's in obvious need of different eyes & voices if his pass-catching potential is ever to be realized. He's also a willing blocker, so that ability should get him looks on STs & 1st down/short-yardage situations.
I place his chances of making the 53 as good as any other TE's chances right now.

He also played 66% of the Falcons special teams snaps, which helps his chances greatly.

This is the key point probably right here. Outside of Watson, none of the other TE's have proven anything in this league, and Watson is gone for 4 weeks. Q-Bert has as good a chance as anyone until proven otherwise.

I have him immediately replacing Izzo on my 53 (although most I see posted here don't even include Izzo in the first place).

There's a positive history of hard work and some talent....the cost is nothing...if the season started this coming weekend it would be Izzo and that's it.

Looks like they’re just pulling the same page out of last season’s playbook at WR. Throw it at the wall and see if it sticks. The passing game is going to go through the WRs this year. Where we will miss Gronk the most is as an extra blocker.

"Tape study is absolutely maddening on Saubert as it roller coasters from eye-popping potential to lapses in concentration and effort as a blocker. Saubert's speed and athleticism will get him open and he should test well at the combine. Teams will have to balance the flashes with the drops and decide how early they want to pull the trigger on a tight end with starter's potential but a low floor." — Lance Zierlein, NFL.com

That is one of the darkest "Weaknesses" descriptions I've read.
Five receptions in two years, married with an unwillingness to block, is not very heartening.

Cousins, If you look at Rotoworld, They have Saubert as #85 for the Pats. Now that might be because of his Falcons #. But he was known so far as a blocker.
You might have your coresponding move there .....unless LaCoss is la-finished and off to IRL world?
Don't think Isso looked great..... But what do I know. Perhaps Beck is the equal to Rizzo?

Beck seems destined for the Practice Squad. Saubert looks to be competing for the #2 (blocking TE) roster spot.

Most folks see the need for FEWER tight ends now that Gronk is gone. I'm not sure that I see that. If we emphasize the running game more, we will need the normal 3 TE's on the roster. I don't think that we have 2 better than Saubert, although we might certainly add yet another TE.

Yeah, it's hard to argue with a conditional 7th! And his special teams contributions might give him the inside track, IF his blocking has improved since college.

That said, come mid-season I still expect to see a TE corps of Watson & LaCosse.

some believe that Saubert was very good at the end of last season

Or LaCosse is more hurt than we hoped.
Or they just wanted to add one more JAG to the pile. A conditional seventh isn't exactly a glowing endorsement.

I like the trade. Can’t be any worse then our other “TEs”....right?.......RIGHT?

Of course, you are right, but aren’t there many JAGs out there looking for an audition “for free” ? To play devil’s advocate : we mostly all figured KVN was a JAG (despite when he was drafted) when he came over for not much more...

From Bostonsportsjournal:

  • One NFL executive: “More pass game than run game value: not bringing him there to win the point of attack … closer to a (Jacob) Hollister type.”
