While I share your displeasure over not having Brady under contract past this year, I can’t help but wonder why you take such issue with revisiting contractual issues at the end of the season? Belichick wants to take it year by year, now.

It seems that both parties have a mutual understanding that they’ll continue to benefit from the relationship they have, if possible, and will remain in close contact, moving forward. I don’t think that it was really much of a surprise from the Brady camp.

He's Felger....just trying to stoke the flames anywhere he can or he's a steam train out of control.

Why are people saying he’ll be a free agent after this year? Is it really a guarantee they won’t keep him under his new contract?

??

The contract automatically voids on the last day of this season.

Of course, the team could sign him under the same terms as the voided contract. However. other teams will have an opportunity to make offers during the legal tampering period.

Obviously, Brady and the are likely to come to terms. But also obviously, that seems less likely than before the voidable extension.

To me this is such a non-story. Why is ANYONE upset about having your 42 year old QB on a year to year basis. BB's not upset about it. Brady's not upset about it. Why is Curran so bent out of shape about it? I'll tell you. He now has a very easy narrative to create content whenever he is too lazy to write/report something that ACTUALLY might give the fanbase some insight. The best part is he can use this lazy narrative ALL season long.

Ah did not know that. Why would they have a contract that’s voided automatically last day of the season? I get it’s for cap purposes but surprised you’re allowed to do that.

Second part probably is true to a degree lol. But Tom and BB aren’t exactly open about their feelings. But, we’ve had these stories before (Nate Silver comes to mind) who try to claim Brady isn’t happy and it all works out eventually.

Fixed it for you.

I agree.

I would expect that the new CBA will eliminate such nonsense.

It voids on the last day of the LEAGUE season, in March.

Can't the team and Tom, on the day before that, agree to the same deal for 2020 that was to be voided the next day, and then put in another void for 2021?

Both sides seem happy to take it one year at a time, so I am fine with that.

I agree that this is a non-story.

I suppose that Brady isn't "upset". He's not happy either. I would think that he wanted guaranteed 2020 monies, but $8M helps reduce the pain.

But, as Brady says, "it is what it is". Brady has been given different choices than he might have had under other contract terms, but Brady will have no problem dealing with this new reality.

They can renegotiate any time before that.

If Brady walks after this season the remaining signing bonus that was prorated over 3 years would all be lumped into next year instead. That would be a $13.5 million cap hit. If they thought he would walk at the end of the year that would be very odd to structure the deal that way. Assuming Brady doesn’t go off a cliff the team should be more than willing to get a new deal done otherwise they’re paying him over $13 million not to play for the Patriots.

I expect that Brady's agent will read any offers. However, I don't expect much action until the couple of days before the new season. There is ZERO reason for Brady not to see what other teams would offer.

Perhaps Brady would turn down $50M-$70M of guaranteed money for his final two years from a contending team, perhaps not. In any case, his agent would have something to discuss when the patriots are making offers in the last couple of days of this season, or early in next season.

They can renegotiate any time before that.

???

The team delayed the cap hit of $13.5M to benefit the 2019 team. This would have been done, and should have been done, no matter what the team's assessment of Brady's future.
$13.5M of dead money is the LEAST I have seen anyone suggest for the first year without Brady.
