Using the cool tool @Ian developed last week, Bedard has also been reporting this. Interesting.

2019 Patriots Training Camp Player News | Following All The Players During Camp - Updated Every Night After Practice.

Seems a bit contradictory:

"The Patriots have been heavily favoring a 3-man front on defense: Adam Butler, Mike Pennel and Lawrence Guy. " - Henry McKenna, USA TODAY - 7/27/19

"Pennell continues to buried on the depth chart." - Greg Bedard, Boston Sports Journal - 8/05/19

They were more than a week apart.

They were more than a week apart.

Yes, I know. That doesn't change the fact of the contradictory posts. In about a week, the player went from being a starter on a 3 man line to "continues to be buried on the depth chart". Are you looking to argue about the applicability of the world "continues"?

There is a lot going on when you consider there are 90 odd players running around, each trying to get reps. Plenty of "information" that is open to speculation and interpretation.

The only thing we know for certain is that, based on what we saw last night, there are going to be a number of defensive players that aren't going to make this team who are legitimate NFL players.

At any rate the first (and last) preseason games are very hard to assess. Remember this is a team that excels at situational, week to week, game plans. These games are the opposite of that. What you want to see in these games are just assessing a player's individual techniques. The end result as a team (especially for the non-skill players) really don't matter. Are they improving their skills as individual that will eventually be plugged into that week to week game plan down the road. That is what the coaches are looking for. Along with are they aligning correctly, making the right calls, playing when tired or dinged, etc.

Maybe the threat should be titled something like, " What's going on with Mike Pennel?", but something does appear to be going on that the team doesn't seem happy with.

You don't play a veteran in the second half of that game for a few snaps, and with the third string in practice, if you are happy with him. I had heard Pennel had been used in joint practices with the 3rd string, but didn't realize this happened in the game as well.

The run stuffing defense looked good last night. You save over 2 million by cutting Pennel. I don't think he will be cut, but if you can talk about trading J. Jones or cutting Duke Dawson, this isn't much different considering some early evidence.

If Cowart is a beast, I can see it. Right now, no.

Given that the first report was from the opening days of camp, the two dates are functionally far apart indeed. For instance, Jakobi Meyers wasn't seeing any 1st-team reps on the first date, but was seeing them regularly by the second.

When I first saw this thread title, I assumed it was a joke or trolling. But props to the OP, it does seem like Pennel has been dropping down the depth chart as camp has progressed. Not a welcome development.

Even if he makes the team they'll be cutting him in November to make room for Gronk.

So if I got this right, the Pats have four nose tackles - Butler, Guy, Shelton and Pennel. Mike Pennel only carries $500k in dead cap money if cut. I only have three of these guys making my 53, and none of them is exactly Vince Wilfork. Pennel is not a sure thing.

Butler isn't exactly a nose guard

Other angle is they wanted to see Shelton in action and if he sucked find someone else to replace him ASAP and/or extend him the courtesy of cutting him early so he could hitch on with another team
Shelton is having a great camp. Maybe the just don’t like what they’ve seen from Pennel I mean this guy got his option declined by the Jets it’s not like we are talking about JJ Watt.

A month ago I would have said definitely, now I still strongly suspect he will but who the hell knows really. He wouldn't be one of the 20 most surprising cuts of the Belichick era, and his contract doesn't exactly make him uncuttable. He's talented enough at a position of need, though, that it would be pretty surprising to see him go. There are a bunch of reasons why someone might not see much time in the first preseason game that aren't 'he sucks and is on the bubble'.

Personally, assuming Pennel isn't just absolute trash in TC, I'd like to see him and Shelton on the roster. NTs still have real value and introduce a ton of flexibility to the front 7 when you have a real one, and Shelton didn't show up consistently enough throughout the year to be confident in having him as the only guy.

Good God in heaven, you people really do want to argue about which specific number of days would flip the comment "a bit contradictory".

Nah bud, I opted out of your adorable definition games years ago. That's why I was attempting to turn the conversation back to the main point instead. I hope you find somebody else to play, though! It's always a shame when you have to spend Friday night playing with yourself.

Time to table this thread until Friday morning when we can return to label the OP a genius or an idiot. (Sorry, B6, those are the only options available on fan message boards.)

Can you imagine the Thanksgiving dinner vibe at THAT guy’s house?
